Jul 2, 2005Too much junk in my Hard Disk and registry so I did a complete new install of WindowsXP Home. As I was doing this and then installing all of my software I had not realized that my flash drive was plugged in and WinXP then named my Hard Disk drive F: So everything is now on drive F: and working well. In the new install, XP created my Hard Disk NTFS. Now, I used ghost to clone my Hard Disk. XP called the backup drive C: Backup finished fine, BUT, when I switch drives and put the backup in only, the computer will not boot up. I get to the blue Welcome screen and that is where is sits. I tried the ghost GhReboot.exe program, but no help.

Jul 18, 2008I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

Aug 22, 2005I have a 0 byte file setting on my desktop I can't get rid of. The error message says "cannot delete file. cannot read from source file or disk." Nor can you cut, copy, rename or do anything else with it. I googled the error message and have tried a number of suggestions without help, i.e.: safe mode and command prompt, etc. I tried Move on Reboot without success. I even resorted to restoring back prior to before the time this started without success. It was originally a business email that I saved to my desktop. When I opened the email to read it this icon appeared. when I deleted the original email this one stuck around and around and around. There must be some registry edit or something else I can do to get rid of it.

When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match.On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Jul 10, 2005I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just,well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
After Backup Should Have My Backup Folder Or Backup.bkf File?
Aug 16, 2008After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

Feb 11, 2007I sometimes get the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter" error message when booting, but if I unplug my Logitech PS2 keyboard it boots up as if nothing was ever wrong. I can then usually plug the keyboard in as I reboot the PC and it works fine. But there is obviously something wrong here! It's as if the fact that the keyboard is attached to the PC makes the PC think that there is no hard disk in the PC.
There are no flags in Device Manager and everything is identified correctly

Aug 15, 2006basically what im looking to do is delete some old entries that the XP backup utility has created over time that i setup a while ago. Im using the "copy" option.so nothing has been appended or incremental.Im just looking to avoid deleting the setup i got, and maybe just delete a few "copy" backups so that theres not 8 gigs / 1 years worth of backups.i only need about 4 months I forgot about it.cuz i never neaded it. But it looks as if its the only way b/c i cant just delete selected backups.all or nothing?/ anyone know of a better backup utility that is simple and easy on a system BTW?

May 10, 2008I just finished assembling my new build. It boots and I can get to the BIOS. I even have it booting from the DVD drive so I can load Win XP.However, when I get to the Windows Setup and it asks me if I want to setup windows(press enter), Repair(some other key), quit(F3) my keyboard won't work. I hit "Enter" because I want to install XP and nothing happens. It is not responding to my keyboard strokes.
This is strange because the keyboard works in the BIOS.

The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility

Mar 29, 2008I built a new computer, amd 9600 phenom 64 bit processor, gigabyte mobo, 4 gigs ram lots of fans, nivida geforce 8500 gt video card, 750 watt atx power supply. Twp hard drives, 160 gb maxor ide and 500 gb sata western digital wd 500, 2 cd/dvd burners, 1 blue ray burner. I am uning windows xp pro 32 bit os and all my other programs on my western digital hard drive and everything works perfect including high definition blue ray reading and writing. However I want to install windows pro 64 bit operating system on the 160 gb maxor drive and I have tried and tried to install it and I just can't. I am no brain when it comes to compters rather an idiot. I do not want to dual boot the 500 gb hard drive I want a new and fresh installtion of windows 64bit on the ide maxor harddrive and keep what ever programs (so few) and 64 bit drivers and any thing else related to the 64 bit on this 160 gb ide drive.

Jul 29, 2009My HD crapped out on me so I bought a new one. My brother gave me a copy of Windows Black for my new OS, so I installed it. Everything was running smooth, (installing drivers, hardware and such) until I DL'ed Steam. I noticed a weird box on my screen. I'd scroll up or down and it would multiply. "Oh great" I thought. Un-installed Steam then re-installed my video card. Back to normal. Re-installed steam, same problem. GRRRRR.Finally gave up on Steam and just started browsing for other software to get. Out of nowhere the boxes show up again, so I know it's not a Steam problem. Maybe a video card problem? Maybe a Windows Black bug? I have no idea, but this is what I see on my desktop.
