Comp is running Windows XP Pro. From the begining, I put a HDD w/ 40GB as master an other w/ 40GB as slave. Everything was fine until one day HDD D: was gone, no in ''MY Computer'', ether on BIOS, files associates to drive D: can't be opened. Opened computer, unplug data cable of drive D:, plug again, restart, and drive D: come again, everything is fine, working as usual. One week after, drive D: has gone one time again. I have a 120Gb HDD that is acting up. Random sputtering sounds and then reboots. I have another 120Gb empty HDD. Want to transfer all files, including Win2K Pro to the new drive. I looked at some messages for hardware, but they are for Win98 and Me. Says problems with Win2K, etc. Are there any other programs other than xxcopy that will work with Win2K? I was familiar with Ghost, but only with Win98SE. Would there be a version of Ghost that would work now?
I have two hard drives connected to my system. I will refer to them as A and B. I had previously taken a Ghost image of drive A and wanted to restore this image to the drive. However, both the drive were connected to the system when the restore occurred and the image got restored to drive B. Hence I have lost the data I had on drive B. The operating system in use is Windows XP. The version of Ghost used is Norton Ghost 2001
Too much junk in my Hard Disk and registry so I did a complete new install of WindowsXP Home. As I was doing this and then installing all of my software I had not realized that my flash drive was plugged in and WinXP then named my Hard Disk drive F: So everything is now on drive F: and working well. In the new install, XP created my Hard Disk NTFS. Now, I used ghost to clone my Hard Disk. XP called the backup drive C: Backup finished fine, BUT, when I switch drives and put the backup in only, the computer will not boot up. I get to the blue Welcome screen and that is where is sits. I tried the ghost GhReboot.exe program, but no help.
I tried ghost 2003, the cloning of the larger drive to the smaller one didn't work (too big it said), I cancelled the operation, however, I now have a new partition on my drive, by looking at disk management, I now have cpavilion) D: recovery and this new drive G:VPSGHBOOT. I don't want it anymore. PC's 200 gigs, now it's divided into D:5.32 fat32 c:181.07 ntfs g: 7.00 fat, and also an unallocated 159.97 gigs All these fall under Disk 0: Basic 346.28GB online doesn't make any sense.
I did a ghost image of my C-Drive as a FAT32 using Nortons Ghost. I have since converted the C-Drive to NTFS. Will this ghost image still work OK if I need to restore my operating system (Windows XP Pro)?

After an entire weekend working on this project, I am beat. I have a client who has a Windows NT Server and is replacing a 4 GB SCSI hard drive with a 20 GB IDE. System sees the new drive. I have used Ghost to create the clone of the original drive from the 4 GB SCSI to the 20 GB IDE. That worked fine. However, after removing the SCSI drive to boot from the 20 GB IDE, I repeatedly obtain the STOP: 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. I have been in contact with Symantec and they have not been of much help. I have seen the article from Microsoft regarding the error as well but have not had much luck.
My question is by chance, has anyone else experienced a similiar situation and what has been your resolution? I would be extremely grateful to anyone who may have an answer to this problem.

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.

i have a Compaq nx 7400 .i was hahving a lot of problems with the computer so i decided to put a new hard drive in and reinstall XP . well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.
I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.

When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site

A little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. A friend gave me a laptop, my problem is that it came from Japan thus everything is japanase thus I can't hardly use it. I had to reinstall XP because of spyware issues. I saved important data on my slave drive. I reinstalled XP. Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.
i screwed up my registry, and of all things it was the keyboard driver or something, so theres no hope of fixing it on my computer. ive got the drive hooked up as the slave on a different computer, but i cant figure out how to edit the registry on my drive rather than the primary drive. is there any editors that will open it from a file? any way of decompiling it? theres got to be some way to edit it. also, they are both xp.
I have just bought and installed (to the point of completing initialization under Disk Management) a new 1 TB hard drive.
