I can not access hard disk properties because Windows Explorer hangs whenever I Right click on a hard drive icon. I am running WXP pro SP2 completely up to date with updates.

Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? I just bought a Seagate ST3400620NS SATA HDD. I want to install it as a second HDD just for storage. I currently have a ST380815AS with the OS (XP SP3) on it as the primary drive. The PC (HP DC570 SFF) boots fine with only the primary drive installed. When I add the 2nd HDD the the system recognizes that I have added a 2nd HDD. It asks me to save the settings by pressing F1. I do that. The XP boot screens displays. The blue progress bar moves once and the system reboots. I switched SATA connectors for the 2nd HDD but when I boot I get a message that I need to move the connector back to the original spot.Then I thought maybe the MOBO (Hewlett-Packard 0A64h ) only supported 1.5 gb/s. Not the case. So I am totally stumped. I checked HPs website to see if there were any updates, and there was an advisory that a different model Seagate HDD might cause a similar sounding problem but no mention of the model HDD that I own.

I updated the BIOS on the original motherboard and have now fitted a new MB but still the problem is the same. Everything was fine before the original drive went down with death rattles.

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
My external USB hard drives always used to show up in either My Computer, or Windows Explorer's double pane view in Windows XP. Although they still show in My Computer, they do not show up in Windows Explorer anymore, unless I select them in My Computer First - and then choose the "Folders" selection. do Not give me the standard answers which are for External drives that don't show up Anywhere .. because the drives DO show up in Disk Management, and they DO show up in My Computer, and this is Not a new drive that needs to be formatted.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWow, this is kind of odd I ran disk cleanup and noticed that the size of the temporary files it wants to delete totals about 56 GBs, which is pretty much everything on my HD.It did this once before, only it just deleted Windows, which is pretty ironic.I've tried running chkdsk with the r parameter, and it found nothing, so I'm not sure exactly what to do with a Windows-specific issue like this, especially seeing as I have no restore points other than the latest one, which was just before I found this all out. Reformatting is NOT an option.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOK,i need some help here,after changing desktop casing,I noticed that my 2nd IDE Hard drive/HD is not on "My Computer",check on the Device manager HD is present and when i tried to see the details of my HD on Disk Management HD is not present,so I've rebooted HD is present in BIOS.Things I did:1.Fix windows using recovery console2.Connect/reconnect cables3.Check if HD is still working(100% sure it's working)4.Updated driversAdditional info's"HD is Seagate Barracuda(Master-Slave set up), OS Windows XP sp3**Please note that i can't see the HD on my disk management like any other people would do to fix this problem***If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. Somehow I managed to install Windows on my E drive, and my C drive is still as it was. I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. I reinstalled windows fine on a new hard drive with no problem. My back up hard drive is not showing in my explorer list though. Does anybody know how I may access it? View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 internal IDE HDD's and an external IcyBox USB2 self powered enclosure with a Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM HDD in it. The external HDD is divided into 4x40GB partitions.
Running CHECKDSK on the internal drives is no problem but when I try it on a partition on the external one it goes through Phase1, Phase 2, sometimes reaches Phase 3 then hangs and if left PC switches off. Second time it hung looked at Performance tab in Task Manager and CPU was at 100% and I could hear CPU fan revving up, obviously CPU was overheating and shutting down.Looking in Event Viewer there are a large number of disk errors. Properties says: "The device,DeviceHarddisk2D, has a bad block".Clicking on the MS link tells me:the disk itself failing or the electronics on the IcyBox

I have a Computer which operates on XP Service Pack 2 and has a Maxtor 1TB external Hard Drive hooked up. We do a lot of Video Editing (programs such as DV Storm, Vegas etc.) and up until yesterday the external came up as Local Disk E, but it became unplugged whilst the Editing programs were running.It now it comes up as Local Disk (I) but the problem is the Edit programs doesn't recognise any of the files (avi., mpg etc.) that are on the drive (comes up as 'invalid path'), and nor does it show them in their previous format.
