I have bad blocks on my hard drive. I was told to download check disk 1.03. and this software would mark the blocks as unusable, enabling me to reinstall xp maybe solve my problem. My problem now is I don,t know how to execute the program. When I tell it to run the message say c:tfs system in use. So i log off and it terminates the program
View 4 RepliesI have 2 internal IDE HDD's and an external IcyBox USB2 self powered enclosure with a Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM HDD in it. The external HDD is divided into 4x40GB partitions.
Running CHECKDSK on the internal drives is no problem but when I try it on a partition on the external one it goes through Phase1, Phase 2, sometimes reaches Phase 3 then hangs and if left PC switches off. Second time it hung looked at Performance tab in Task Manager and CPU was at 100% and I could hear CPU fan revving up, obviously CPU was overheating and shutting down.Looking in Event Viewer there are a large number of disk errors. Properties says: "The device,DeviceHarddisk2D, has a bad block".Clicking on the MS link tells me:the disk itself failing or the electronics on the IcyBox
enclosure, the data on the disk is accessible and readable? Are there any known problems with this type of external HDD? The problem only came to light when I tried to merge partitions on external HDD using Partition Magic and it couldn't be done because of errors.
I always have errors reported on my hard drive, even after chkdsk /f and /f/r."Freespace marked as allocated in the volume bitmap". Why does it never go away? Windows XP Pro with all of the updates. Machine runs fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a Mac User but bought a golf sky caddy (uses GPS to find your distances on a golf course) which required connecting the device via USB to the computer, loading a PC based driver and then having the website "communicate" with the device to download information.I successfully loaded the driver but to an error message from IE 6 says to the effect: "there is a security issue here and we're not going to let you access that web site". That dialogue box says "click here" for options around this. But that function does not work.
View 12 Replies View Relatedwhen i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

The reason I accept it is bcoz he said I can try to reinstall a win xp with english version (btw, the OS is win xp pro in japanase version). If this screen appears again follow these steps:Check for viruses on your computer, resume any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers, check your hard drive to make sure it is porperly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check hard drive corruption. then restart computer. how in the world I can follow the above steps if everything written on it are in japanase language? I also try to visit the manufacture's website, thinking that perhaps it help solve the problem but....i also need a japanase translator to understand it.

I have run memtest86 and there doesn't seem to be a problem with the RAM. I have run a diagnostic from my harddisk maker and it checks out fine. I am suspicious of the hdd because of the following. When i run chkdsk it usually says: Errors found chkdsk cannot continue in read-only mode. I ran a boot-time check, with /r, but still when i boot to windows i get errors in the volume. This does not happen to my 2 non-primary hdds.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a larged data drive that failed a disk check. It stalls when starting stage two (I belive that is the verification of indexing). I have been able to back-up all of the folders except for a large folder of raw video. The PC locks up when I attempt to access/copy this folder (it appears to be part of the problem). I want to make an attempt to recover this data before reformatting the drive. The check disk fails both at start up or if I run from the desktop both in regular and safe mode.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. For a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

Wow, this is kind of odd I ran disk cleanup and noticed that the size of the temporary files it wants to delete totals about 56 GBs, which is pretty much everything on my HD.It did this once before, only it just deleted Windows, which is pretty ironic.I've tried running chkdsk with the r parameter, and it found nothing, so I'm not sure exactly what to do with a Windows-specific issue like this, especially seeing as I have no restore points other than the latest one, which was just before I found this all out. Reformatting is NOT an option.

They appear on "my computer" correctly, they show up in "Device Manager"(and I have no yellow question marks).In addition in "disk defragmenter" they appear but I'm unable to even run the analyse command(using other software I'm able to defragment them).I've tried EaseusParttion Manager, but the drives don't appear as well.I'm not able to use USB drives as well(I assume it is related), they appear in the right side of the task bar and they appear in "device manager" but not in "my computer" nor "Disk Management

Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up. fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. Somehow I managed to install Windows on my E drive, and my C drive is still as it was. I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. All of the screens match what the instructions say, but the result is nothing.I have searched this forum for HD/XP advice, and have done as suggested, no luck.How do I format my C drive, and start again?
