Is there a utility out there for low-level formatting SD disks? Or a utility that can delete and re-create partition on an SD disk. The disk is corrupted somewhat and Windows XP can't seem to format it.I don't need a picture recovery tool (i already have that).
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard disks or hard drive controllers.Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Bought a new barebones PC and want to transfer my old hard disk with XP pro on it to the new machine.Back in the good old / bad old days of Win98 etc, it was easy to do this as Windows saw IDE as IDE and made no other requests to the system to fine tune, AFAIR.Now though if I transfer the drive I get a reboot, safe mode does the same.I can furnish more info from the boot log if required later but does anyone have a sure fire way of getting the GUI up and running so that it can start updating drivers etc.I'm also transferring the cdrom, dvdrw and most importantly the AGP graphics card so it's not an issue with that
I have an interesting problem that shouldn't be too hard for you guys.I have three external hard-disks connected through a USB-HUB with my WinXP computer.Never had any problems whatsoever. The other day (that is, today) one of the disks didn't show up in 'My Computer'.So I did a right-click on my-computer-->manage-->disk management, like we all would do if a disk doesn't show up.The bar was there but it sayd 'Unallocated' or something like that if I recall.Basicly, it didn't have a drive letter assigned to it wich is pretty weird. Through some magic (that I don't quite remember), I got a drive letter assigned to it.It shows up in 'My Computer', so problem solved is what I thought Not even close.
I have two computers running WinXP; the others run Win2K. When I attempt to see the file system in Explorer of one of the WinXP machines by clicking on "Computers Near Me"/Computer Name, it takes about a minute for the list of logical hard disks to appear. This is true no matter which of the other computers this one is accessed from. No other computer behaves like this. When I click on another computer name in Explorer, the list of hard disks appears almost instantaneously. Moreover, only one installation of WinXP behaves like this -- the one with a clean install of WinXP; the WinXP installation that is an upgrade of Win2K displays its logical hard disks very quickly. Once the list of logical disks appears, clicking on one entry produces a list of the folders in the root directory almost instantaneously.
Im intrested in purchasing a product to clone hard disks in Windows but I have a question before hand If I clone a hard disk into some DVD´s and the I want to restore that image into another hard disk, a new, different size/brand hard disk. Is that possible? Is there a "correct" way to do it? Someone reccomendme either Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image, but Im not sure if itll help me. I hope your answers help me to decide weather to buy the software.
my desk top is using xp and i cant access it i have tried all sorts of things boot disks, recovery disks but still no joy, tell me to format then i can start again,
I want to format my hard drive ( been two years ) ! It is now running XP Pro, which I do not have the discs, and I want to switch back to XP Home, which I have one disc that came with the computer !I've tried booting up with the disk, so that I can format my hard drive, but nothing happens!
i just installed windows xp pro i had layin around just for the hell of it, and it turns out that it had SP0. my internet connection is extremely slow at the moment so it would be painful to download service pack 2. i have a winxp home cd that has SP2 included on that. is there anyway i can install it off that, with out formatting and using XP home?
I'm formatting my hard drive and re-installing XP, and I'm wondering if I can delete the system partition without any adverse effects to the system. When I try to delete it from the XP Setup disk, it warns me not to do it, but I'm trying to create a larger partition for the system. Can I delete the system partition and create a new one.
I got a new system assembled a month back and after 15 days the stop error began to happen (this was after my bro tried to transfer files from his iPod & it didn't happen). I looked up a lot of forums but didn't find this one and couldn't figure out what the problem might be. Restored system, disabled services, but nothing worked. Finally I got the C: drive formatted and Win XP SP2 reinstalled. Didn't install unnecessary/extra software this time. But I found this site a day before getting it formatted, so saved the last 5 minidump files. And the day after the reinstallation, it has started happening again. The first time it was the bcmndis.sys file -- Airtel Beetel 220bx modem -- connected with the USB; couldn't find another driver for it online.
This is my DAD's personal computer now, we are trying to format his hard drive i get to the point where it asks me whether i want to proceed, i put yes and hit enter, it then doesn't start formatting, it just say C:WINDOWS?
Fitted an extra HDD to my machine. Detected in bios but XP will not find it. Drive is unformatted (new), how do you format in windows XP. It was easy in 98SE, just go to dos, fdisk then format. How do you do this in XP?
I know theres heaps of partition and format tools out there to help you do certain things, but what i was wondering is instead of formatting the old fashioned way, and losing everything, is there a way i can format and not lose anything, so i dont have to do a million re installs? my hard drive is partitioned NTFS. and i have my C: where all my windows files are stored seperate to all my other drives.
I was posting some pictures to a bird forum last night and when I tried opening a folder I was told that the hard drive, c:, was nor formatted and asked whether I wished to format it. Naturally I clicked on No and tried to contain my mounting panic. I defragmented the hard drive and was told that the defragmentation process was successful apart from 123 Kb in My Pictures - I'm assuming this refers to the problem folder though originally that contained a lot more data. The files are all backed up so I tried to delete the folder but was told this was not possible as the "catalogue is not empty". In the end I just renamed the folder "Black Hole" in case I click at the wrong time and accidently reformat the harddrive. Under Windows 98 I would have run Scan Disk to see whether there was physical damage to the harddrive and repair or at least isolate the damaged section. As I recall that's not possible with XP. I thought of restoring an earlier configeration but I'm not sure when the problem arose. I really have 2 questions.
1. Is there a likelyhood of a serious problem with the harddrive? 2. How can I get rid of the folder and prevent the same thing from happening again? I'm not sure if it's relevant but I have a dsl connection with a firewall from Zone Labs, a virus progamme (McAfee) and I regularly scan the harddrive using Spybot and Adaware.
I have been trying to format my hard drives. I tried using Device Manager, it let me format my E drive, but not the C drive, and then I tried by booting with the XP CD. Somehow I managed to install Windows on my E drive, and my C drive is still as it was. I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. All of the screens match what the instructions say, but the result is nothing.I have searched this forum for HD/XP advice, and have done as suggested, no luck. How do I format my C drive, and start again?
This forum has been incredibly helpful, and now I must ask another "ignorant" question to maintain my computer loving insanity. I recently acquired a used laptop running XP Home. I use Pro for work, so I thought it wise to install Pro over the top of the the former owners' OS and thereby effectively delete his old files etc. Well, what I found was that Windows simply imported the old OS info right into the new install, leaving folders, files and programs I didn't want on the hard drive. So my question for you guys and gals is this. How do I destroy everything on my hard drive, then make the laptop (without floppy drive available), accept the reloading of my XP Pro CD? It is a full OEM version by the way. If I can format the HD, and have BIOS boot from CD-ROM, will I have a "fresh" CD-only install at that point, or will there still be little goblins of information running around in my system
Yeah I have reformatted my hard drives a few times over the years so I am no stranger to it however I am just curious about something. When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?
if someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
For some reason they have not included these very usefull gems, the Setup Disks for Windows XP, for all those that cannot boot from a CD for some reason.XP uses 6 floppies and there is a version for XP Pro and one for Home Edition. You need the right set for your version. The makeboot and files forthe floppies are not on the XP CD.
I have a sony vaio pcv-rx550 desktop that had a corrupt hard drive. It would not let me do a system recovery or system restore, so I wiped the hard drive with dariks boot and nuke, and ordered a new set of restore disks for my specific brand and model, but when i put the first disk in-it says ERROR: this recovery cd is not for your computer.I checked the dir. using a win98 setup disk and there is a sony folder and a image folder but I do not know the correct command to get them to load that way. any help would be appreciated. Can I use a regular win xp home disk to get it up and running and then use the disks to load the remaing software that came with it off of the restore disks? It had win xp home on it to begin with.
I have the setup disks for XP (all 6 of them) with utilities on the 6th disk that I use constantly in my work environment to troubleshoot/repair PC problems. How do I get all 6 floppies onto a CD and have it boot up?
Ever since I reinstalled a few weeks ago, I'm still having problems. No doubt it's because I chose not to install all the Dell disks (since for crying out loud - who wants so much extraneous junque? Some of my problems:(1) Attachments I receive in webmail don't work. for example, someone sent me .doc attachments and when I tried either download or preview or saving to WordPad (as well as text-file) - nothing worked. All it displayed was either one line of gibberish or nothing at all.(2)Whereas prior to reinstall, my Nvidia Color-Correction tab used to display(complete with popout tab) so that I could dim my screen via Contrast/Brightness/etc., now it fails to display. This is affecting my health due to my photosensitivity! It's definitely related to my reinstallation. There's definitely stuff missing. My question is:Since the Dell Darlings failed to be so kind as to thoroughly label each CD, perhaps someone here can enlighten me re: how I should proceed in order to regain the above functions?
This is a dell PC on Windows XP, I was going to just reformat it with my windows xp CD and the Serial key that's on the computer, but I'm worried that if I delete the partitions and then do a completely fresh install that I won't be able to find the chipset drivers and everything. I've never reformatted a production PC, only my own custom PC so I have all my driver installation disks but none for this one I'm trying to format. So if I reformat this computer, install windows xp, how can I get all the drivers for the hardware?
I'm about to reformat my computer (XP Home)and since I haven't done this before I have a couple of questions about backing up certain things. Can I back up programs like for example Nero?.Programs that that I don't have installation disks for or do I just have to get them later?. I've backed up pretty well everything I want to keep like "My Documents","My Pictures" and things like that.Is there anything that I should absolutely not forget to back up other then the things I mentioned?.
My computer died and I move the hd to a dell and it wont boot. I read that you should reinstall OS to solve. However here are my problems:
1. The computer came with XP Home installed but no disks only the key sticker on the outside of the computer housing. Manufacturer, V2 premier which I found out is just and OEM, would not give me any disks or help me in any way.
2. I think I may have installed an XP professional upgrade but not sure.
3. I have and XP professional CD (Not just and upgrade) I can boot off of but dont kown if the upgrade key will work with it or the key on the side of the computer.
