Formatting Hard Disk From Bios And Not Using Disk Utilities?
Feb 27, 2007if someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
Getting Out SP2 From OS CD Without Formatting The Hard Disk?
Jul 5, 2010i just installed windows xp pro i had layin around just for the hell of it, and it turns out that it had SP0. my internet connection is extremely slow at the moment so it would be painful to download service pack 2. i have a winxp home cd that has SP2 included on that. is there anyway i can install it off that, with out formatting and using XP home?

Sep 12, 2006my dad's hard drive crashed and so he has just bought another, now he needs to reinstall Windows XP Home but unfortunately he doesnt have a disk as its an HP machine and a disc was never supplied, the operating system was already on the computer and the option of making a recovery disc was available but he never actually undertook that option So he needs to get Windown back on his computer, he has the serial sticker on the side of his machine, he rang up HP and they said the machine is not in warranty - they cant send him a replacement disc

Apr 8, 2008I have been trying to format my hard drives. I tried using Device Manager, it let me format my E drive, but not the C drive, and then I tried by booting with the XP CD. Somehow I managed to install Windows on my E drive, and my C drive is still as it was. I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. All of the screens match what the instructions say, but the result is nothing.I have searched this forum for HD/XP advice, and have done as suggested, no luck.How do I format my C drive, and start again?

Jul 29, 2008Yeah I have reformatted my hard drives a few times over the years so I am no stranger to it however I am just curious about something. When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?

Apr 11, 2010I have a HP pavillion laptop windows xp.I think i got a virus back and tried to remove them with some anti spyware stuff but in the end i tried to reformat and this is what happens. I have my set up disk in, i start up my computer. Blank black screen with blinking _ in the top left corner. After a bit of loading in this screen it says Press any key to boot from CDa blue screen with Windows Setup is in the top right. At the bottom it says "Setup is loading files" etc etc. Text flashes in the space beside.a screen tha tsays "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this so and so" I think this is the blue screen "of death"?

Oct 22, 2005I went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. I then typed format c: again as i thought the origional format didnt happen. I then get a message saying that this disk is not able to format. the bootdisk also doesnt seem to load correctly now either.

Aug 24, 2005I was posting some pictures to a bird forum last night and when I tried opening a folder I was told that the hard drive, c:, was nor formatted and asked whether I wished to format it. Naturally I clicked on No and tried to contain my mounting panic. I defragmented the hard drive and was told that the defragmentation process was successful apart from 123 Kb in My Pictures - I'm assuming this refers to the problem folder though originally that contained a lot more data. The files are all backed up so I tried to delete the folder but was told this was not possible as the "catalogue is not empty". In the end I just renamed the folder "Black Hole" in case I click at the wrong time and accidently reformat the harddrive. Under Windows 98 I would have run Scan Disk to see whether there was physical damage to the harddrive and repair or at least isolate the damaged section. As I recall that's not possible with XP. I thought of restoring an earlier configeration but I'm not sure when the problem arose. I really have 2 questions.
1. Is there a likelyhood of a serious problem with the harddrive?
2. How can I get rid of the folder and prevent the same thing from happening again? I'm not sure if it's relevant but I have a dsl connection with a firewall from Zone Labs, a virus progamme (McAfee) and I regularly scan the harddrive using Spybot and Adaware.
Deleting Hard Drive And Reinstalling
Jan 17, 2008I am trying to format (or completely wipe out) my hard-drive on a Dell Dimension 3000 and reinstalling windows XP but somehow I installed a second version of XP and everytime my PC boots it asks me which version of windows to use. Trust me, I have done plenty of research on how this happend but after messing with my PC for over 6hours I finally gave up!
Basically when I tried reinstalling windows the first time, I was given a choice to delete certain partitions on my HD but when I tried deleting the main partition (with the most data on it - drive C setup said there are certain files on that partition that setup needs to continue. So I figuered I have to boot from the CD. I pop in the CD, windows setup doesnt start from it. I change the boot sequence in BIOS and still, setup will not start from the CD. I can get into setup by starting one of the two windows versions however and running the XP CD by double clicking on it but that won't let me delete that one partition I am trying to get rid of.

Aug 2, 2005I was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?

It is a full OEM version by the way. If I can format the HD, and have BIOS boot from CD-ROM, will I have a "fresh" CD-only install at that point, or will there still be little goblins of information running around in my system

What happens is when I close out of programs, I see in the taskmaster that my cpu usage goes up to 100%, and it appears that a copy of this process is the one taking up the most even those as simple as notepad.exe or calculator.exe. And if I open multiple notepads, as I close out each time it gets stuck on taskmaster and then it becomes painfully slow until I go in and end process multiple times.
