Deleting Hard Drive And Reinstalling

I am trying to format (or completely wipe out) my hard-drive on a Dell Dimension 3000 and reinstalling windows XP but somehow I installed a second version of XP and everytime my PC boots it asks me which version of windows to use. Trust me, I have done plenty of research on how this happend but after messing with my PC for over 6hours I finally gave up!
Basically when I tried reinstalling windows the first time, I was given a choice to delete certain partitions on my HD but when I tried deleting the main partition (with the most data on it - drive C setup said there are certain files on that partition that setup needs to continue. So I figuered I have to boot from the CD. I pop in the CD, windows setup doesnt start from it. I change the boot sequence in BIOS and still, setup will not start from the CD. I can get into setup by starting one of the two windows versions however and running the XP CD by double clicking on it but that won't let me delete that one partition I am trying to get rid of.

Problem is after reinstalling xp on a new hard drive my second drive only shows up in disk management does not show up in my computer .It has all my stuff on it from my old drive so really need teh info on it badly.But under disc manmgement where it shows up healthy with no drive letter everything is blanked out except delete partition.

I have an old customized computer from my grandma and when it boots up it asks me to select a operation system, there are two. How do I delete the operating system I don't want?I don't care if I have to reformat the whole hard drive... I would actually prefer to. And I have tried to delete one, but I cant seem to get rid of one of them.

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

i have found that my little bro has accidentally formated my hdd and deleted partitions also then he created new partitions and installed XP. now is there any hope or a way that i can recover my previous data ????

I got the system disks with it BUT the little midget has NO! optical drive at all how ever I do have a 8Gig usb flash drive and can make a bit for bit copy of the DVDs on to the usb drive will it boot ? (the little rat will boot from a usb drive I have slackware running on it no network connection yet)will windows install from it ?

I wanted to do a fresh reinstall of windows XP on my laptop and had a few questions.I received a windows XP service pack 2 reinstall disk from dell just a few days ago since they never gave me it when first purchased the laptop.I also have to say is that my DVD Drive on my laptop doesn�t work but I have an external CD-Rom that that I will be using for the reinstall. So here are a couple of my questions.Will my laptop have any trouble using the external drive? Will all my data be erased when I do a reinstall? Do I need to reinstall drivers?

My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

I have a 250 GB hard drive. I put 30 GB for my C, and the rest in D. That's not enough room for C. I have about a GB left. I removed the partition for D, which is now, not in C, but "unallocated." Sheeet! That's not what I intended. I have both C and D already backed up, but surely there must be some way to increase the size of C.How do I go about enlarging C?

i have a Compaq nx 7400 .i was hahving a lot of problems with the computer so i decided to put a new hard drive in and reinstall XP .
well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .

I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.

my dad's hard drive crashed and so he has just bought another, now he needs to reinstall Windows XP Home but unfortunately he doesnt have a disk as its an HP machine and a disc was never supplied, the operating system was already on the computer and the option of making a recovery disc was available but he never actually undertook that option So he needs to get Windown back on his computer, he has the serial sticker on the side of his machine, he rang up HP and they said the machine is not in warranty - they cant send him a replacement disc

I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? I am facing two problems with my lap top hp campac presario 2100.
1.The loptops battery to be changed. I dont know how many batteries are there. Any cmos battery there like any other pc. Pl advice. What would be the cost. and the model number . Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

I would like to delete a folder without deleting its contents. Copy, Paste and then deleting the folder with its' contents etc can work. But is there any way of getting it as a windows context menu? ie right-clicking and selecting delete folder but not contents.

When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site
