Closing Creates Multiple Copies And Fills Up Cpu Power

Jun 8, 2007

After I leave my computer on for a few days straight, things begin acting strangely. What happens is when I close out of programs, I see in the taskmaster that my cpu usage goes up to 100%, and it appears that a copy of this process is the one taking up the most even those as simple as notepad.exe or calculator.exe. And if I open multiple notepads, as I close out each time it gets stuck on taskmaster and then it becomes painfully slow until I go in and end process multiple times.

Creates A Additional Explorer.exe

Jan 15, 2005

I had recently downloaded a file that for some reason doesn't open and it creates a additional explorer.exe in the Windows Task Manager running at 60 percent. The other problem is that I cannot delete this file due to the fact it opens this additional explorer.exe in the task manager. I have tried deleting it in safe mode and scannned the file numerous times to see if it is a virus. Nothing.

Programs Not Closing / Hl.exe Isnot Closing

May 29, 2005

Some programs (currently hl.exe is doing it :/) are just not closing right. I end them with task manager and they dissappear from everywhere but Task manager, where they stay no matter how many times i click end process. I tried through command prompt, it said it terminated the process, but it just stays in the task manager process list. I also tried through EndItAll, which told me it didn't have permission to kill the program.

2 Copies Of XP

Dec 30, 2008

I recently took my computer to the local college and asked them to reformat it for me because my computer didn't come with discs. They sold me a new KEY and reloaded XP for me. After several months, I realized that they loaded a new copy on top of the old copy. My computer should be 35% full but now it is over 70%. Is there a program that I can get to take the old copy off to free up space on my hard drive?

2 Copies On 1 Partition?

Mar 21, 2010

I recently FUBARed my main instalation of windows XP on my only computer. Basically the only thing that works is internet explorer and file explorer. All other applications say "the application failed to start because the settings are wrong or some bs..." which means I corrupted a lot of .dll files I shouldnt have. I need to burn stuff to DVDs so that I can format and reinstall windows again, the only problem is that no burning software will run, and XP pro doesn't support burning DVDs by itself (as far as I know, I cant get it to do it.) I can't install any new software because the installation program shows the same error. I have plenty of room on my hard drive, a good 200GB. I want to install another copy of windows onto the same partition so I can install dvd burning software and save all my stuff( I cant make another partition of free space without deleting all data on the old one AFAIK) From what I've researched I think that windows will add a .0 to the end of all system folders and files when you install 2 copies on 1 partition (windows.0, documents and settings.0, program files.0 etc...) I could then choose to boot the good copy, install the dvd software, navigate over to my old stuff and burn it, then format and install clean.

Ive done this before when I was like 12 on accident because windows xp kept locking me out after the 30 days needed to activate. I ended up with like 6 copies of xp on 1 partition that ran fine untill I ran out of HDD space, but I dont remember how exactly it did it and if it overwrote anything. I honestly had no idea WTH i was doing I do remember I had options right after POST that asked which copy I wanted, and thats what I need. I just want to make sure I can do the same again without overwriteing anything or deleting anything. Also, I dont want to get a error saying I dont have permission to access the my documents folder. I think I remember that being a problem, that I couldnt get to my documents folder on 1 instilation of xp from another instalation without getting a permissions error. I really REALLY need to save all this stuff so if anyone knows if this would work or has a better idea please speak up!

Hard Drive Fills Up/ Don't Know Why?

Jul 9, 2005

I have a IBM thinkpad with Windows XP Pro. It has a 25G hard drive.I keep getting error messages telling me the crive is full.I have deleted all non-critical programs. ( The only large ones I have left XP are Office XP, Lotus notes, and my Ipod software.)I have also deleted all non-essential files. ( I have 893MB remaining used in My Documents. This includes the songs for my Ipod.)It seems after I delete files/programs within 1 or 2 days whatever space I've freed up is used again. I have tried using the search function to find large files.

Two Copies Of On System / How To Remove?

Mar 26, 2007

I was unable to boot one day, and despite clean boot, etc., I could not boot. So I installed XP again, and now am able to boot up with the original XP. It is annoying, as each boot I have to choose between the two copies of the OS.My question: how do I remove the 2nd, more recent installation of XP? Do I just delete the directory where I installed it (/windows2)?

Desktop Manager For Power Users Must Have Power Toys

Desktop Manager allows you to switch between multiple desktops creating more elbow room for those who like to stay organized while pushing the max thread limit.1. First grab XP PowerToys from microsoft.com Once installed right click then check: task bar > toolbars > Desktop ManagerYou may now view up to four new desktops. I prefer not to have "Shared Desktops" on as it reminds me more of linux (and is cleaner). Now you may hide the buttons etc. and use Windows key + 1-4 to switch between desktops and Windows key + v to preview.

Sure Delete Fills Hard Drive With 300 Gigs

Oct 10, 2008

I've heard a lot of good things about Sure Delete, which is used to delete files from your computer permanently (I'm really paranoid about identity theft). When I used it, I just expected it to clear these deleted files from my system so they couldn't be brought back, but what actually happened was much different. I came back to my computer to find that my 400 gigabyte hard drive that was originally less than 90 gigabytes full now has 397 gigabytes used and runs at an astoundingly slow speed. The readme for the program claims that if such a case occurs to delete the sdel.tmp files in the directory cleared, which in my case was C:. Unfortunately, they don't exist there, or anywhere else. I've done over 15 full system scans, used the Windows XP Disk Cleanup tool 3 times, as well as 2 3rd-party disk cleaners, attempted a System Restore (Which didn't work), tried to email the makers of Sure Delete (Which returned an error every time), re-ran the program twice, and uninstalled the program, restarted my computer, and checked again. Nothing has done anything. If you wanna check out Sure Delete,

Hard Drive Fills Up Slowly At Five Minute Intervals?

Jun 28, 2010

I set up a log through performance monitor that would give me a percentage of free space available and the time at which the percentage was available. I noticed a pattern, every five minutes the hard drive would lose around 300mb. As the free space percentages grew smaller and smaller so did the discrepancy of free space from five minutes prior. I then noticed that it was between a 15 second gap that some thing happened, I then used process monitor to try and see what was happening in that 15 second time frame, alas no real definitive cause could be ascertained. I tried to look for write, create, processes and even network activity that only happened with in the time frame, but nothing really jumped out. Maybe I overlooked something while going through the promon logs?

C: Drive Inexplicably Fills To Capacity With Unknown Data

Nov 24, 2006

I just installed XP on a brand new core 2 duo system. After I leave it on for about a day, C: fills up entirely, apparently on its own.The weirdest thing is, any time I reboot, the extra data disappears and the free space returns to normal, then slowly reaccumulates again. The paging file is located on a different partition so it's not that. I usually have Symantec Corp installed, but I switched to Kapersky by recommendation of a friend and it found two viruses - one of which was a downloader. It removed both and I figured that was that, but the problem persists.Ideas short of a reinstall.

Loads Of TMP Files In C:windows System32 - Hard Drive Fills In Short Space

Oct 6, 2007

Loads of *.TMP files created automatically in c:windowssystem32 " on http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...matically.html while searching for a problem I was having. It was posted by DidoWide on the HJT forum, so I was unable to post a reply, nor could I send DidoWide an email to ask how he solved in in the end, but I have the exact same problem. Two times now, at a seemingly random times (both times round about 11:00AM), all of a sudden, loads (and I mean tens of thousands) of TMP files, looking like 0fb149fbcb12b2799cfd1c55fc08b4e9.TMP are pumped into my system32 folder. In a matter of 15 or 20 minutes, this may generated as much as 5GB of used diskspace. Some are 0K, some are 91K, but other than those tow, sizes seem to be constant.
