I am running out of disk space, down to 22% only,despite frequent fragmenting, registry fixing, disk cleanups.My C drive fills up one percent every week on average,although I am shutting down my computer without installing updates.
View 14 RepliesI'm running Windows XP sp2. Problem is, my C drive fills up. I have removed all but the latest restore point, reduced the max amount of restore point storage to 5%, and removed all of the programs that I don't use very often, moved all of my files to the D drive, clean the cache and remove cookies regularly, and use disk cleanup a lot. After all of this, I only have 1.25GB left in C drive. Not even enough space left to defrag the drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Before long I won't have ANY programs left. I don't use a TV card or anything like that, although I do have the capability to record but never use it.

( The only large ones I have left XP are Office XP, Lotus notes, and my Ipod software.)I have also deleted all non-essential files. ( I have 893MB remaining used in My Documents. This includes the songs for my Ipod.)It seems after I delete files/programs within 1 or 2 days whatever space I've freed up is used again. I have tried using the search function to find large files.

During last scan, the available memory went from 300 mb to 0 in about forty minutes, and the program couldn't complete the scan. Can I sart in safe mode and resolve this, or other options.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've heard a lot of good things about Sure Delete, which is used to delete files from your computer permanently (I'm really paranoid about identity theft). When I used it, I just expected it to clear these deleted files from my system so they couldn't be brought back, but what actually happened was much different. I came back to my computer to find that my 400 gigabyte hard drive that was originally less than 90 gigabytes full now has 397 gigabytes used and runs at an astoundingly slow speed. The readme for the program claims that if such a case occurs to delete the sdel.tmp files in the directory cleared, which in my case was C:. Unfortunately, they don't exist there, or anywhere else. I've done over 15 full system scans, used the Windows XP Disk Cleanup tool 3 times, as well as 2 3rd-party disk cleaners, attempted a System Restore (Which didn't work), tried to email the makers of Sure Delete (Which returned an error every time), re-ran the program twice, and uninstalled the program, restarted my computer, and checked again. View 14 Replies View RelatedI have something causing a bad memory leak, completely fills my C drive usually overnight, every single byte. Is strange because I cant find a single file large enough. Have over 6 Gig space after a reboot, 0 bytes after about 24 - 36 hours, then back to 6 Gig after a reboot. Checked the windows page file and that's not at 6 gig when my HD is full.Virus scan and usual spyware cleaners come up clean.

I then noticed that it was between a 15 second gap that some thing happened, I then used process monitor to try and see what was happening in that 15 second time frame, alas no real definitive cause could be ascertained. I tried to look for write, create, processes and even network activity that only happened with in the time frame, but nothing really jumped out. Maybe I overlooked something while going through the promon logs?

After I leave it on for about a day, C: fills up entirely, apparently on its own.The weirdest thing is, any time I reboot, the extra data disappears and the free space returns to normal, then slowly reaccumulates again. The paging file is located on a different partition so it's not that. I usually have Symantec Corp installed, but I switched to Kapersky by recommendation of a friend and it found two viruses - one of which was a downloader. It removed both and I figured that was that, but the problem persists.Ideas short of a reinstall.

Two times now, at a seemingly random times (both times round about 11:00AM), all of a sudden, loads (and I mean tens of thousands) of TMP files, looking like 0fb149fbcb12b2799cfd1c55fc08b4e9.TMP are pumped into my system32 folder. In a matter of 15 or 20 minutes, this may generated as much as 5GB of used diskspace. Some are 0K, some are 91K, but other than those tow, sizes seem to be constant.

If I reinstall on the 950GB side of the disk can I some how move what ever file tells windows that programs are installed to the new install? because now I'm out of space at first I thought that the 10GB would work if I didnt install anything on the windows partition but now I'm F-ed!
View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine told me the other day that he had downloaded a third party system clock because his did not show the day of the week in the tool tip that appears when you hover over the time. He said the rest of the computers in his house did and that they were all running XP. At first I didn't think that this was even a feature of XP. My computer also does not do this. Today at work however, I just so happened to hover over the time and noticed that the tool tip did contain the day of the week. I am always double clicking the clock to check the day of the week at home and this feature would be quite useful.What's going on here? How do you get the day of the week to appear? I checked the system clock settings and there is nothing in there. Google's no help either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy latest reformat of XP Home SP2 and loading of all my programs (Word was installed through MS Works 6.0) and all latest updates has somehow caused the clock to now show the day of the week in the taskbar, under the clock. Have tried reducing size of the Task Bar -- have checked customize under TaskBar settings, but it doesn't include anything obviously jumping out at me and saying "day of week".

The IE update failed on my machine.I submitted a trouble ticket via MS online portal which is free if a failure or anomaly occurs during a windows update. Yes, I gave permission for the MS portal to extract certain files.At the moment I am disinclined to download IE7 as my 99% preference4 is Firefox save for Windows and Office updates which require IE.Here is the response from MS.

I scroll the listing and at the end I find "System Idle Process is cycling CPU usage at 25,44, and 98 percent within an approximate four second sequence. I do this because I normaly boot and try to run Outlook Express to no avail and I am trying to find out the problem. When I try to open Outlook Express I always get the following dialog. "Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is still running on your computer. Please log off of windows and then restart Outlook Express. If the problem persists, save your work and then restart your computer." I go to start and click on Log Off. I wait two minutes and try to start Outlook Express. I get the message the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down! I try to restart the computer but it won't restart or even shut down. Any application I then try to start results in the message "the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down!" I have to Power off the computer.

This computer is old and I fixed it myself, that's why I think running disk cleanup will help, but when i run disk cleanup my usage goes right up to 100%.

What happens is when I close out of programs, I see in the taskmaster that my cpu usage goes up to 100%, and it appears that a copy of this process is the one taking up the most even those as simple as notepad.exe or calculator.exe. And if I open multiple notepads, as I close out each time it gets stuck on taskmaster and then it becomes painfully slow until I go in and end process multiple times.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was installing security cables for the computer stations. when I finished and rebooted the computers(had to disconnect power and other cords to run the security cables) one of them had a display problem.
it seems that the display area has been reduced. the functional area of the screen is maybe 60% of what it should be. in this area it is complete with the full desktop able to be accessed and nothing is missing. but the right 20% of the screen is solid black (cursor stops at the boundary) and the bottom 20% of the screen(that's not black) is displaying a second image of the top 20% of my desktop. (cursor also stops at this boundary.)
Today I noticed that what WAS my E drive is now called F and what was my F drive is now called G. I don't know how it happened, but it's wreaking havoc with Adobe Premiere because on all old projects I have to relocate all files on what were F that are now on G. It's also messing up my shortcuts.

But for some reason after I re-installed windows and ran it, it now made my slave drive into drive c: and my master drive into drive e:! How do I switch the two? The slave master is set up properly in the BIOS. The large drive is the master and the small drive is the slave. But how do I assign the c:designation to the large drive and the e: designation to the small slave drive.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy office has a number of mapped network drives for each user which, unfortunately, start at drive letter F.Each time a USB device is used on the computer it is also automatically assigned the drive letter F (presuming that C is hard disk and D and E are CD/DVD drives). This has to be manually changed from within Disk Management.Apparently this is as a result of physical drives taking precedent over the mapped network drives.Is there any workaround for this other than moving the mapped drive letters further along in the alphabet? - this is not really a feasible solution at this time.

No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive.When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

The reason I accept it is bcoz he said I can try to reinstall a win xp with english version (btw, the OS is win xp pro in japanase version). If this screen appears again follow these steps:Check for viruses on your computer, resume any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers, check your hard drive to make sure it is porperly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check hard drive corruption. then restart computer. how in the world I can follow the above steps if everything written on it are in japanase language? I also try to visit the manufacture's website, thinking that perhaps it help solve the problem but....i also need a japanase translator to understand it.
