I have windows xp sp2 and i have turned on windows update and can see 46 updates in add/remove program but now the update is stuck at 65% and just starts for a few seconds and then disappears after system startup how can i get it going to recieve the latest update?
View 9 RepliesAfter my computer finishes the boot process, I start Windows task manager and click on the processes tab. I scroll the listing and at the end I find "System Idle Process is cycling CPU usage at 25,44, and 98 percent within an approximate four second sequence. I do this because I normaly boot and try to run Outlook Express to no avail and I am trying to find out the problem. When I try to open Outlook Express I always get the following dialog. "Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is still running on your computer. Please log off of windows and then restart Outlook Express. If the problem persists, save your work and then restart your computer." I go to start and click on Log Off. I wait two minutes and try to start Outlook Express. I get the message the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down! I try to restart the computer but it won't restart or even shut down. Any application I then try to start results in the message "the application failed to initialize as the workstation is shutting down!" I have to Power off the computer.

This computer is old and I fixed it myself, that's why I think running disk cleanup will help, but when i run disk cleanup my usage goes right up to 100%.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was installing security cables for the computer stations. when I finished and rebooted the computers(had to disconnect power and other cords to run the security cables) one of them had a display problem.
it seems that the display area has been reduced. the functional area of the screen is maybe 60% of what it should be. in this area it is complete with the full desktop able to be accessed and nothing is missing. but the right 20% of the screen is solid black (cursor stops at the boundary) and the bottom 20% of the screen(that's not black) is displaying a second image of the top 20% of my desktop. (cursor also stops at this boundary.)
i have an icon from microsoft.saids it has updates to install for microsoft office, update service pack 3.the only thing is it won't update.and the icon won't go away until it gets updated .plus norton keeps giving me a box saids norton can't update feature.to uninstall norton than reinstall.now my son did up my whole computer so i am afraid to really touch anything.

At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

It has never been "installed."Windows update fails every time, of course, because it isn't now nor has it ever been installed.The biggest problem is that it keeps trying to apply the same updates over and over and over. It has a non- wireless connection to the internet via my LAN.Last week, the yellow update "shield" icon appeared in my systray and I updated Windows - the update was completed. Since then, the update shield icon has appeared in my systray four times. I installed the update each time, but it seems to have been the same update each time ("KB 967715"). If it is the same update each time, which it seems to be, why would the update "shield" appear in my systray four times within a week and a half to install the same update

in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs.
however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?
I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.

After reinstalling windows and all necessary drivers, my Windows Update is now always telling me I have updates ready to install. When I click on the icon in the taskbar, it starts installing. When it finishes, the icon goes away. However, 2 seconds later, the icon comes up again saying I have updates ready to install. The update I always need to install is MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978).

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a dell latitude d600 laptop and i keep getting stuck at the welcome screen. not frozen, i can move the mouse cursor around but there's no options to choose from so i'm essentially stuck. i usually keep my computer in stand by and then everythings fine. but occasionally i shut down my computer and thats when i have this problem. this problem started once in a while when i started up the computer but now it happens everytime i start it up. i called a tech support number and they had me goto "start" then "run" and type in "prefetch" and over 50 files came up. the man on the phone said there should be about 7 files there.

For example, on one of my workstations WU (the latest, v6) can't update Office 2003 or Visio 2003. On another XP Pro machine with SP2, WU can't apply "Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214)." On that
machine, I see it's been trying since the patch (the color control) was released. Automatic Update always fails. My manual effort also fail. I don't see anything in either the history or the logs that would shed
light on *why* the updates fail. If it matters, Installer 3.1 is installed.
