My computer has automatic update on it but it hasent been updateing lately so i went to windows update and found all the new updates for my computer and clicked "install New Updates" and it went to the download screen and said "Error Download Failure"
View 2 RepliesAfter installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

This system was loaded with malware such as Websearch, Wintools, Myway, and Ebates. I cleaned it out by:
1) Emptying %temp%
2) Disable System Recover
3) Reboot
4) AdAware SE Personel
5) Reboot
6) SpyBot
7) Reboot
8) HiJackThis
9) Reboot
10) housecall.trendmicro.com (new Beta version)
11) Reboot
12) Empty %temp%
13) Re-enable System Recover
I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.
A few days ago some security files were downloaded in my sys (WinXP Home with SP2) as part of the MS Auto Updates out of which one security file KB 923980 also downloaded and installed. But in spite of such insrallation, this particular file keeps coming into the Notifn. Area of the Task bar and on placing my cursor over it, I find that it is insisting to be installed again manually.

I don't know how to do that. I have ALOT of pictures I don't want to lose. If I cancel will it know that I never updated & ask me to update it again at a later time? How great is the risk if I just continue without backing up?

After installing the latest driver, the 93.71 version I'm getting the Notification Icon on the task bar telling me an update for the Nvidia Card is available, version 52.16, I guess the basic update that was downloaded as part of the SP3 update.Is there a way to dismiss this update so that it doesn't continue to appear? For some reason the auto update doesn't recognize there is a newer driver available, the WHQL 93.71.
View 6 Replies View Relatedfirst of all, under the settings for window's firewall, i am not able to choose whether or not i want to enable it or disable it. it is set as disabled and both the enable/disable buttons are greyed out and i cannot click it. second, my auto update keeps turning itself off. after setting it back on, it will turn off the next time i boot my computer. third, i'm having some networking problems. i can connect onto the other computers of my network, however the other computers cannot connect to me. are all these problems related in anyway?

It has a non- wireless connection to the internet via my LAN.Last week, the yellow update "shield" icon appeared in my systray and I updated Windows - the update was completed. Since then, the update shield icon has appeared in my systray four times. I installed the update each time, but it seems to have been the same update each time ("KB 967715"). If it is the same update each time, which it seems to be, why would the update "shield" appear in my systray four times within a week and a half to install the same update

in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs.
however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?
I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.

After reinstalling windows and all necessary drivers, my Windows Update is now always telling me I have updates ready to install. When I click on the icon in the taskbar, it starts installing. When it finishes, the icon goes away. However, 2 seconds later, the icon comes up again saying I have updates ready to install. The update I always need to install is MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978).

I did and my computer would not restart or start black screen would click down seconds and try again but it would not start. For example, on one of my workstations WU (the latest, v6) can't update Office 2003 or Visio 2003. On another XP Pro machine with SP2, WU can't apply "Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214)." On that
machine, I see it's been trying since the patch (the color control) was released. Automatic Update always fails. My manual effort also fail. I don't see anything in either the history or the logs that would shed
light on *why* the updates fail. If it matters, Installer 3.1 is installed.
I tried to update my BIOS on my Acer AOA150 Netbook (I know, terrible idea, I wanted it to be updated in case I used a 9 cell battery). I downloaded the BIOS, version 3310, from http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...&LC=en&SC=PA_7
I clicked on one of the readme files and it said to click on one of the executable files included in the download and to then click "sure." Once I clicked sure, my computer immediately shut down. I tried to turn it on after only about 5 seconds. It simply will not start up completely but I *can* get to the F2 screen. If I choose not to go with the F2 option, the normal Windows XP flashing image will come up, except it flashes slightly slower than normal. Then, right before the screen can display my various accounts to start windows, the netbook completely shuts off. This is an Acer AOA 150 model netbook. I downloaded the BIOS.
I may have tried to turn it on while the computer was still trying to flash the BIOS. Or, I just messed up from the start by trying to do it from Windows.
Every night my computer links with Microsoft and in the morning it tells me that it has updates to install. I click the yellow shield to install and when it finishes I reboot the computer. Now here comes the problem, then it does the same thing again with exactly the same updates. I have checked by going with the custom rather than the easy install and the updates are the same ones each time
