Firewall - Auto Update - Network - Enable / Disable Buttons Are Grayed Out
Nov 30, 2006
first of all, under the settings for window's firewall, i am not able to choose whether or not i want to enable it or disable it. it is set as disabled and both the enable/disable buttons are greyed out and i cannot click it. second, my auto update keeps turning itself off. after setting it back on, it will turn off the next time i boot my computer. third, i'm having some networking problems. i can connect onto the other computers of my network, however the other computers cannot connect to me. are all these problems related in anyway?
I have a pc with xp pro sp2 where i cannot enable/disable firewall, it is controlled by domain group policy. I log on with a user with admin rights on the domain and local machine, with gpo i can enable/disable firewall, but I want to control that from the local machine, how can I get it?
As the administrator signed in, i can not access a lot of buttons or check mark boxes because they are grayed out. Please advice is need to gain full access.
I'm trying to configure the Windows Firewall after recently installing SP2, but it's set to 'Off' and the options to turn it on are greyed out. A message at the top says "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". After googling for some answers, I came across a couple of solutions, some of which involve reg editing, and others using the gpedit.msc tool. Problem is, I'm using XP Home, on which the reg keys don't exist and the gpedit tool doesn't either. SOMETHING must be blocking these things. So how can I disable this Group Policy thing, even though XP Home isn't meant to use it, doesnt have it and I never changed any settings like that in the first place?
I found I can turn the firewall on/off by changing the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWin dowsFirewallStandardProfile EnableFirewall=0/1. and in the Contrl Panel util it changes it's status, but it's still greyed-out with that Group Policy stuff. This is my first post after searching hi and low for help. Thanks for any you can provide. I understand windows, ha ha, but am not a nuts and bolts insider with registry or editers. Just want firewall to work. I upgraded my laptop with noproblem with sp2......
I've searched for this topic and am not able to find anything. I'm wondering why my Windows Firewall options are all greyed out and a message states that "for your security, some settings are controlled by a group policy" I also have a follow up question as to how to remove a service that appears to not be in the HJT log but shows when I check msconfig under services
I've tried everything. After download of SP2 I tried several things to no avail. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm. I uninstalled Norton 2003. But the options to turn on XP firewall are still grayed out.
I am having a challenge making a Windows XP workstation part of a Small Business Server 2003 domain; both are relatively fresh OS installs. The WinXP box was placed on line before the SBS and has been running through (2 NICs) the SBS to the internet as a "Workgroup:" computer. Now that I am ready to join the WinXP to the SBS as a "Domain:" computer I find a terrific challenThe first indication of a challenge came when the SBS <http://<sbs2003ServerName>/connectcomputer> ran into errors. It would place itself on the workstation with the user indent, "__sbs_netsetup__",
I have a keyboard with some of those "Extra" buttons on top like those shortcuts "Mail, home, favorites, forward, rewind, play, pause...etc" well you'know the buttons that no one in the world ever uses, now I don't know what happened, but my keyboard got a short-circuit apparently (maybe someone spelled something on it or something) and what happened was, the Up arrow had got shorted with the "My Computer" button, and the left arrow with the "Calculator" shortcut, so each time I press up it opens the My Computer window, and each time I press left it opens Windows Calculator, now you can imagine how annoying that could be when playing games, you press one arrow and poof, you'll be Alt-ctrl-deleting for the next hour, so is there a way to disable those buttons? as in make windows ignore the command once it receives it?...........
Recently a friend of mine used my computer while I was in the shower. I have no problem with my friends using my laptop at all. Although, he felt the need to "delete browser History" from IE7, all of it. With that, he deleted all my saved usernames and passwords, which I never can remember and that's why I save them. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me (different users).
In the dialog window for "Delete Browser History", is there a way to disable the "Delete Forms" and/or "Delete Passwords" buttons? I've seen a way to disable the "Delete History" button from that dialog box. (Pictured Below) I have tried using the same registry edits as the "Delete History" button tweak, but changing the relative info for forms and passwords, and it does not work. I'm running XP PRO - Updated as of this AM.
I have been battling with a Norton problem for quite some time now. The Antivirus will not load upon startup and when I go to manually set up auto protect, I cannot enable it. Additionally, the status of my email scanning with this program is listed as "error" and marked with a red "X". I have tried several things to fix this problem but nothing has worked.
Ever have the curiosity to enable auto run on your floppy drives? Probably not, but just in-case you have had the itch to do so, I will explain how it's done. This tip involves editing the registry, so I would highly recommend making a backup of it first before proceeding.Find or create the key : HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Current Version->Policies->Explorer->Then find the value named : NoDriveTypeAutoRun.Note : if your value has 95 in it, proceed to step 1, if it has "B5" or anything else, proceed to step 2.Step 1. Right click on this value and click Modify. If the value has 95 in it, delete the number 95 and replace it with 91 , making sure to keep all zeros and spaces in the value.Step 2. If the value has B5 in it, or any other letter followed by the number 5, change ONLY the number to 1, so, for example it looks like B1. NOTE: If you value does not have 95 in it, and instead has a value with a letter such as B and then a 5, this tweak may not work. Then click OK, restart your computer, and you will now be one happy auto run man.
I have my winXP firewall enabled and at the same time, zonealarm. Will it have a conflict? Do I need to disable WinXP firewall? Or can I have the two running at the same time?
I Cannot Enable Mcafee Firewall Or Virus Scan. Error Message Says To Re-install Active Shield Or If I Started Pc In Safe Mode To Restart In Normal Mode To Enable Firewall Or Virus Scan.
After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.
My computer has automatic update on it but it hasent been updateing lately so i went to windows update and found all the new updates for my computer and clicked "install New Updates" and it went to the download screen and said "Error Download Failure"
A DV device is treated like any other removable storage in XP and you get an autoplay prompt when you plug in the camcorder. When I bought my DV camcorder I installed some software that came with it. The software sucks, but before I came to that realization, I had already made it the default for DV autoplay. The problem is that once you select an app to autoplay, there is NO WAY to change it unlike with other removables (where you can right click on it and change it in it's properties). Trust me, I did a LOT of research online and could not find any way to do it.Finally, after a careful search through the registry, I figured out how to disable DV autoplay entirely.ALL the autoplay handlers are stored in this registry folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAutoplayHandlersHandlersIfound the app that was being autoplayed when I plugged in my DV camera and deleted it's entry. Now NOTHING autoplays when I plug in my camcorder which is just the way I prefer it. I'm sure there's a more elegant solution that allows you to reset the autoplay so that you can select another app, but this solves the problem for me.
I need to disable or turn off the windows firewall (XP pro SP2) but the button in the firewall console is light grey. In other words, I can not turn it off.
I want to get rid of whatever is causing my computer to act like it's firewalled.I'm currently studying in Japan and have ADSL in the dorms. It seemed to be firewalled, but no one else I asked really knew much about it, so I just kind of accepted it and moved on. But recently one of my friends in Tokyo has gotten a new internet connection, which her computer works perfectly on and gets amazing speed. But when I connect, it still seems I am firewalled. Using PC Flank's scanner pcflank.com all my ports are stealthed while hers are closed.
I have installed XP as an upgrade from W2K to my wife's computer, and I recall that in the W2K installation the auto-logon feature was enabled. Now I am trying to disable this feature, so far without success. I have even used TweakUI and still the auto-login feature runs every time I reboot. I looked under the Group Policy editor, following my Administrator's Pocket Consultant for clues, and there is no effect.
i dont know the actual technical term for this function. its when u type something in the search box, a box will show your previous search terms. its very annoying & i would like to get rid of this EXTRA function. i tried to look into the 'options', but couldnt find any selection that can disable this function.
When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will automatically restart, ofter it will restart too fast for you to see the error message. You could check the error log in this case but that is too easy. We are going to disable auto restart on system failure.
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
Every time I put a DVD into one of my drives, Media Center automatically launches. Drives me insane. This version came pre-installed and I NEVER use it except with my XBOX 360.
1. Both drives are set to ignore all disc types in the AutoPlay properties. 2. There is no setting (I can see) within Media Center to disable this autolaunch.
This lady doesnt do much with her pc. Let her granddaughter download crap from bearshare and you know the malware virus issues galore. I ran a couple of programs to get rid of those issues. She had NO antivirus so I was going to download the trial version to Trend Micro for her. This is when I discovered she had never updated her pc. Trend says it will only work on SP2 and above. Tried to, and updates were disabled. Followed the microsoft KB articles related to turning on the auto updates, the BITS services, to no avail. Tried to register and reregister the DLL's, that failed also. Tried to go to the update site, tried to downloading the malicious removal tool, it will not let me run it. I ran housecall, a bunch of vulnerabilities show up possible related to just the SP1 issue.
OS : windows XP Pro sp3Problem : We have a machine that has lost Scanner and Camera wizard from autoplay a few days ago after we moved this PC from a local Workgroup to a Domain. After moving it to the domain with the new user, we copied the Windows profile from the old local user to to the new domain user. We currently do not have any group policies configured to disable auto play. When I log in with the username into the old local account the Wizard pops up fine. It is something related to the user/profile change. When we plug the camera into the computer autoplay works and recognises that the camera has pictures but there are no options to transfer pictures in the pop up box. i have tried a a few reg edits , we do not have Real Player, No luck with Windows autoplay repair wizard either.
im using windows server 2003 with symantec antivirus so i can mass update and install it across the network, im now after a firewall with the same corporate style mass configuration and updates and so on, is there any free tools like that, or otherwise if its decent for the price, whats a good profesional/corporate firewall?
WinXP SP2 home This system was loaded with malware such as Websearch, Wintools, Myway, and Ebates. I cleaned it out by:
1) Emptying %temp% 2) Disable System Recover 3) Reboot 4) AdAware SE Personel 5) Reboot 6) SpyBot 7) Reboot 8) HiJackThis 9) Reboot 10) housecall.trendmicro.com (new Beta version) 11) Reboot 12) Empty %temp% 13) Re-enable System Recover
I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.
I've had something happen to my Windows XP Pro network connection properties. No matter what I do the under the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties it always defaults back to Obtain an IP address automatically. I'm trying to assign a static IP.I've been using this computer in a static IP mode for approximately 6 years. Monday all #$%^ breaks loose and I'm still trying to recover. The registry still holds the proper information, but for some reason everytime I view it from the properties tab it's back to auto.
I use Zone Alarm free for my firewall. Then i found out about Comodo, which i thought mkight be better. I researched and found out it had better protection. I downloaded it, and set zone alarm to off. I don't like having no firewall (I distrust the hardware one, have reasons) so i disable the network (direct connecion + lan. I install it and restart.I try to re-enable lan (direct doesnt show until lan) , and get bsod. Restart, try agian bsod. It is while it is acquiring network adress. Thinking it is the firewall, i load up
