i have an icon from microsoft.saids it has updates to install for microsoft office, update service pack 3.the only thing is it won't update.and the icon won't go away until it gets updated .plus norton keeps giving me a box saids norton can't update feature.to uninstall norton than reinstall.now my son did up my whole computer so i am afraid to really touch anything.
View 5 RepliesI normally remove the updates/SPs from my Windows folder after a few days of running with the SP installed. All those packs can take up a ton of space. I move them to a separate folder for safe keeping for about a week, then, if all is well, I delete them. I don't think I've deleted the IE7 SP, but I don't know what the SP number is.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are running Windows XP Professional SP3 on an HP Pavilion D4100Y. After a recent Windows Update, the computer was completing the update installation before shutting down, when the surge protector was accidentally turned off before the computer was finished with the updates. Now, when the computer powers up, it goes to the Windows XP splash screen, flashes blue for a quick second and the computer reboots.
If we access the Boot Menu, the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Enable VGA Mode, Last Known Good Configuration options all lead to the OS Choices menu, which gives "Windows XP Professional" and "Windows Recovery Console" options. Both options reboot the computer. Only the Disable Automatic Restart option doesn't reboot the computer, and it gives a BSOD with STOP error 0x00000024........
The title pretty much sums it up, I can't update to the new service pack, a window pops up and says "Access is denied". What do I do now?

At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs.
however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?
I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI start up my computer, I get this message pop up: Fatal Execution Engine Error (0x7929f276) By accident, I went to my control panel and clicked on Administrative tools, and clicked on the Micrsoft.Net Framework 1.1 Configuration and got this same error message: Fatal Execution Engine Error (0x7929f276) so how do I get rid of it then? I went online and found out that I needed to go to my Add/Remove Programs and put a check mark next to the "Show Updates" which makes it show all of the Microsoft .Net Framework stuff. I did that, and managed to remove the Service Pack 3. BUT when I tried to remove all of the Service Pack 1 it said something like that "something is already in the process of installing, please wait till it gets done"

If so, I haven't heard anything, and Microsoft service packs usually generate a lot of media attention. I thought perhaps Microsoft would bundle SP3 with the upcoming Internet Explorer 7. If there is no SP3 on the horizon, I suppose Internet Explorer 7 will be released by itself.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a full HP system restore and the Computer guy who came to my house installed the Service Pack 3, the latest version. I used to have Service Pack 1. I have had quite a few problems since then because of the full system restore and having to re-install alot of my programs, etc. But anyway I noticed today, that down in my system tray (or whatever you call it) on the bottom right of my computer where all the little icons are, there is this Microsoft Updates Automatic Updater with the yellow shield and it said that an update ready to install so I tried installing it. i created a norton ghost image of a machine, which i deployed onto a new pc. my problem is that when i go to run windows update, it runs through the process, finds a lot of updates, but then fails to run the update. the pc i took the image off would have had the latest updates, but on the new pc it looks like the windows update wont work.

I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.

Last week I thought I had a virus on my computer. Programs were freezing, the computer would restart out of nowhere, and I was getting messages stating referenced memory at "some number" could not be read or written or something like that. My friend called me up and I guess microsofts most recent update has been giving other people the same problems that my computer was and is still having.
