I'm in the middle of setting a backup solution for my HDD on WindowsXP PC. I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.
Just installed a fresh copy of Windows XP pro SP2 on a computer here at work. I went to the Windows Update page and selected 80+ critical updates for some reason about 73 of them downloaded the rest say failed. And all of the optional updates I tried did the same thing. just showed failed in the download screen.

"Install the ActiveX control required to view the website," but I don't get the bar saying to install it. None of the troubleshooting tips were relevant.
After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.
This isn't really a threatening problem, but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem: I downloaded Windows XP SP2 through windows update yesterday I intalled it and everything was fine until i couldn't connect to the internet. "modem Hadware failure" or something like that. So, i System Restored back to the point before I downloaded and installed SP2, and now i can connect without any problems.(I disabled all the windows firewalls that came with SP2, so I doubt that the firewalls were the problem)
I inadvertently downloaded SP3, but I don't want to install it because of all the problems I've read with its installation; so, how do I delete the downloaded file? Where is it on my hardrive? Also, ever since it's been "sitting" downloaded but not installed, I haven't gotten any new notifications of any more recent XP updates. (I have it set to ask me if I wish to download new updates)
I have windows XP service pack 2. Yesterday I clicked my automatic update reminder and contemplated weather or not I wanted IE7, I ended up clicking yes, so it downloaded. I did not install the update yet. While talking to an associate on the phone I mentioned that I never get yahoo IMs from her anymore, she said she cant access yahoo messenger ever since she installed IE7 and had other problems with IE7, she uninstalled it but said her IE6 is now acting weird also. Bottom line, I do not want to install IE7 after doing some recent research on it. How do I remove it from my computer so that I dont accidentally install it?
in my start menu -> all programs there is windows update and another called microsoft update. the icon for the windows update is the usual blue globe with the windows (4 colours emblem, its the one on your "start" button) and the icon for microsoft update is an image of a computer and an arrow pointing downwards.
in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs. however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?
I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a small business version instead of Home and Home Office version, if that makes any difference.
I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is older stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?
For Some odd reason, After I downloaded an AVG free update I lost my desktop. All the profiles on my computer only show the background when you open them. All programs still operate correctly. I can open the task manager and run programs from it, but all the icons and the start bar are gone. I am not able to open any display controls, nor can I right click and get any options. I am not even able to pull up the control panel.
I downloaded a bios update from Dell. After using it, I can not delet it from my desktop. I get a message that says, " Close any programs that might be using this program and try again". This has happened to me one other time. The way I got rid of it that time was using "system restore". I would rather not do that this time.
Downloaded what I thought what is an update... now my computer is freezing and running slow, denying access to programs.I have windows 2000 professional and a microsoft (or at least what I thought was a microsoft) update popped up. I went ahead and downloaded and that is when the problems started. Can anyone help? Did I download a virus?
know that it has been a long time since service pack 3 was available for download on the automatic updates for windows, and it is just now that I've decided to update my SP2 to SP3. I've been looking for reviews all around the net and I've found mixed reviews on SP3. And it's got me thinking if I should update or not. So here are my questions . Is SP3 safer than SP2? Is it faster than SP1 or SP2? (Like increased OS speed) Are there no bugs on SP3? (Like software incompatibilities, etc.) Anything I should be aware of before I install SP3? I've read in some blogs and other forums that you should uninstall some things on your computer for you to update to SP3 successfully.I also read that some users got lots of errors when they updated to SP3, is this true? Is SP3 MUCH BETTER than SP2?
My Windows XP automatic update feature on my laptop keeps trying to install "Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 (KB963707)" but each time it fails.
Win Xp sp3. I just received an update from Microsoft. On installation I got the following message "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)" How do I either solve the problem or make the install shield go away? I note that I have higher versions of .Net Framework installed on the computer.
This problem i had it for about 5 months ago , I cant solve it yet , I dont really know what is the problem or what is missing .. Screen shot below ....
Last week I thought I had a virus on my computer. Programs were freezing, the computer would restart out of nowhere, and I was getting messages stating referenced memory at "some number" could not be read or written or something like that. My friend called me up and I guess microsofts most recent update has been giving other people the same problems that my computer was and is still having.
My wifes computer is running XP. After an update from Microsoft last night the computer goes in an endless cycle of reboot. It will not let me reboot in Safe Mode. It gives me all of the options to do so but will default back to the general XP reboot
I dont usually receive problems from microsoft updates, but this one is getting on my nerves a bit. See, I am at a college in california, and there is this program called "Cisco Clean Access" which is like a toll booth to use the internet here. You have a student ID and a password.for some reason, the campus administrators changed Cisco Clean Access so that it requires everyone to update their computers, mainly PC people. I just got my desktop up and running after installing 2 new GPU's and a PSU, and am now updating it. I have the updates, but one of them is giving me some lip! here "Updates were unable to be successfully installed.
my computer is not allowing me to install updates from microsoft update, it will download them then will come up with a box saying could not install the following updates,
I installed the microsoft update, it gave me three updates, i downloaded, installed, and rebooted. Now, when i go to 'custom update' so i can download some of the other patches, i get this:The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.
OS: Win XP SP2 Proc: 2.93 Pent4 Mem: 1024 Meg All security updates installed with exception of :MS06-033 (KB917283) which generates : "Error 25013. Failed to install assembly
WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework2.0.50727System. |Windows.Forms.dll because strong name signature could not be verified. Was the assembly built delay-signed?"Attempts to retry download fail.I do not know what it means nor do I know how to fix it
So Microsoft has this new "Microsoft Update" thing you can install or whatever, which I guess is like Windows Update plus other updates for Microsoft products? I'm a bit leery of switching to that because it sounds like you end up letting Microsoft look at all the software on your computer, etc. Is that correct?
When go to Microsoft.com and try to update my computer, it says that the update was failed. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this problem, but am out of ideas.
I update my system but the Microsoft.net Framework 3.5 will not update, can someone provide me with help in doing so? I need to know what the difference is between the following as I do not know which one to download that would fix the issues I am having which is framework 3.5 wil not update:For Windows XP and for Windows Server 2003 Expand this imageDownload the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows XP x86 and Windows Server 2003 x86 package now. Yesterday I got a notice from microsoft that a critical update was ready to install. I downloaded the update after closing all other open windows. After the installation was complete it restarted the computer after which my compter would not completly boot up. I had to boot in safe-mode and do a system restore to get it working right. Today I have the same notice so I went to the windows update page, and saw the update was there. I didn't download it because of what happened before. So I went to my installed update history and it said it was successfully updated. I looked at the update again and it said the update was 0 kbs. Can you tell me what happened and why now the up date says 0 kps to be installed?
