Downloaded Update / Dont Want To Install
Feb 14, 2007
I have windows XP service pack 2. Yesterday I clicked my automatic update reminder and contemplated weather or not I wanted IE7, I ended up clicking yes, so it downloaded. I did not install the update yet. While talking to an associate on the phone I mentioned that I never get yahoo IMs from her anymore, she said she cant access yahoo messenger ever since she installed IE7 and had other problems with IE7, she uninstalled it but said her IE6 is now acting weird also. Bottom line, I do not want to install IE7 after doing some recent research on it. How do I remove it from my computer so that I dont accidentally install it?

I inadvertently downloaded SP3, but I don't want to install it because of all the problems I've read with its installation; so, how do I delete the downloaded file? Where is it on my hardrive? Also, ever since it's been "sitting" downloaded but not installed, I haven't gotten any new notifications of any more recent XP updates. (I have it set to ask me if I wish to download new updates)

This isn't really a threatening problem, but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem: I downloaded Windows XP SP2 through windows update yesterday
I intalled it and everything was fine until i couldn't connect to the internet.
"modem Hadware failure" or something like that. So, i System Restored back to the point before I downloaded and installed SP2, and now i can connect without any problems.(I disabled all the windows firewalls that came with SP2, so I doubt that the firewalls were the problem)

I'm in the middle of setting a backup solution for my HDD on WindowsXP PC. I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.

I went to the Windows Update page and selected 80+ critical updates for some reason about 73 of them downloaded the rest say failed. And all of the optional updates I tried did the same thing. just showed failed in the download screen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a small business version instead of Home and Home Office version, if that makes any difference.
I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is older stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?

For Some odd reason, After I downloaded an AVG free update I lost my desktop. All the profiles on my computer only show the background when you open them. All programs still operate correctly. I can open the task manager and run programs from it, but all the icons and the start bar are gone. I am not able to open any display controls, nor can I right click and get any options. I am not even able to pull up the control panel.

I downloaded a bios update from Dell. After using it, I can not delet it from my desktop. I get a message that says, " Close any programs that might be using this program and try again". This has happened to me one other time. The way I got rid of it that time was using "system restore". I would rather not do that this time.

I'm about to carry out a clean install of XP. It's my first planned install - previously I've been forced into it following an encounter with the blue screen of death. So this time I'd like to do it with a little more care.I've searched the forums, and looked wider. There are some great articles out there, but some questions remain unanswered for me.I know I have to track down backup files for Outlook, Outlook Express, and Firefox Bookmarks. Hopefully, I'll work this out for myself. I will also copy all the contents of My Documents to an external HDD, of course. The main issue still on my mind is security. Presumably, once XP (SP1) is reinstalled, drivers added, then SP2, I should add my Panda antivirus suite, Spybot, Ad-Aware, & Zone Alarm. These will all be seriously out of date, so the next thing will be to re-establish my internet connection in order to update them.
Will my PC be vulnerable during this intervening period? If so, is there an alternative? Can I download the updates now, before wiping the hard drive, copy them to the external drive, then copy them back somehow before going online? Or is this regarded as an unavoidable risky time, like baby turtles trying to make it down the beach from their eggs to the safety of the sea, while predators have a field day?

New problem with winupdate. After clicking "Custom" on the update site, I get the screen that basicly says I must install software for use with the site. I click to start the download and install and the software downloads. After download the screen go's into "Install" mode, then quickly changes to "Some software failed to install". The solution is supposed to be on the update history link, but that does not show the Windows Genuine Advantage software to have been downloaded/installed. Repeating the cycle results in indicating the software for Windows Genuine Advantage has been downloaded and is ready to be installed. Clicking "Download and install" yields the same result of "Some software failed to install".

I did an in-place repair of XP MCE 2003. I had previously installed all MS security fixes and updates, the list in my "installed programs" showed about 70 or 80 updates. The in-place repair gave me an unscrambled registry, and an unpatched XP install, without touching my installed programs or data. A good thing, overall, it fixed my major problem.
I immediately went to get all the updates -- 76 of them downloaded. I don't let Updater install automatically -- I get all the updates, but decide which to install because I got a bad version of IE7 that took me a long time to delete and recover from, but I installed ALL security updates. I generally use FireFox, so I didn't view IE7 as a security update. Anyway, it installed one or two updates, and then said the rest could not be installed....

I recently uninstalled Windows SP3 RC1 from my computer and reverted back to Windows SP2 through the use of Projekt (Project) Dakota. Before uninstallation though, one of my siblings had run this script to update to Windows SP3 RC2. I do not want to install the newest RC2, as I'm now waiting for a final release. I changed my Windows Update Settings to download but to not install, as it was already downloaded from yesterday. Is there anyway to remove the already downloaded but not installed update for Windows SP3 RC2, and is there anyway to remove the script (that tells the computer to download SP3 RC2?)

I found a BIOS update for my system, but I don't know how to install it. It is a .bin file (ak31s20p.bin to be exact). I was told to make a bootable floppy and do it that way, but the instructions that were given, are for .exe and .rom files. Does anyone have any idea on how I can install this file?

On June 11 I was informed that updates were available for my computer. After doing an express install, I still got a message that updates were available. This time I did a custom install and only one update was available to install, i.e. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 [KB982168] so I did the install and was informed that the installation was sucessfull. However, the notification that this update was available appeared again. I went directly to the MS update site and again was informed that this update should be installed. Again,I successfully installed it, restarted the computer, only to get the update notification again. For some reason this update will not install even though it says that it does. I looked at my Add & Remove list of programs and found.

First off, I would like to note that I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 1 and it's a HP Desktop AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700+ Windows Update keeps showing me a message saying "This version of Windows XP is no longer secure. Please download Service Pack 2." So, I download Service Pack 2 and then I start the install and it backs up the files and stuff and when it's almost done, a message pops up and says "Access Denied". And then it says "Please undo all changes that has been made". I have tried it 2 or 3 times and it keeps doing the same thing.

WinXP SP2 home
This system was loaded with malware such as Websearch, Wintools, Myway, and Ebates. I cleaned it out by:
1) Emptying %temp%
2) Disable System Recover
3) Reboot
4) AdAware SE Personel
5) Reboot
6) SpyBot
7) Reboot
8) HiJackThis
9) Reboot
10) housecall.trendmicro.com (new Beta version)
11) Reboot
12) Empty %temp%
13) Re-enable System Recover
I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.
