recently i downloaded 1 windows xp update through Automatic update ( i dont remeber what was it) After it completed its download...and when i tried to shutdown my PC, the box which comes showing the 3 buttons (Standby,Turn off,Restart), under it was written that "Turnoff the computer after installing the updates"...as it was normally displayed after installing the updates...The Problem is that after logging off (during shutdown process..) ,the screen which shows these messages "Installing Updates 1 of 1..." and "Do not Turn off or Unplug the PC..It will Turnoff Automatically..."..These messages keep on coming for a long time...i left my PC for 1 complete day..but still this update is not installing neither it is turning off my computer..Again if iam forcefully restarting my PC ..then the next time when i want to turnoff the same cycle happen
I've recently repaired my OS (yes, as in repaired in boot setup via the CD...) and now Windows Update doesn't seem to work anymore!
Automatic Updates or manual updates, it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have downloaded all the critical/high priority updates from Microsoft Update, but every time I try to install them, the message reads simply 'Some of the updates could not be installed' (ie: ALL of them! - see attached images)
So i went to the update page to try and install them but the search bar just keeps searching without giving me any info. I let it run for an hour then closed it.
I have tried windows update and microsoft update both have the same result.
I have a broardband connection and have never had to wait this long before.
I tried to download and install the latest XP update (Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.18.2621.7), and it failed three times. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am running on Windows XP, few years old. Having a problem with Windows Update where it is not downloading the updates. The webpage loads with this message: “Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website…The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing it to run
"Install the ActiveX control required to view the website," but I don't get the bar saying to install it. None of the troubleshooting tips were relevant.
I would like to update Java. I deleted Java 2 RunTime Env, SE v1.4. I delete Java(TM) 6 update 3 contained in ADD or Remove Programs, keep it or delete it? What Java do I keep as there still remains Java Control Panel in the Control Panel folder.
I've been using this laptop, and I have to deal with it for quite some time before I can replace my other one. Anyway, I've attempted to install Windows Service Pack 2 and 3 several times (I can't download or update Windows applications without it), but I haven't had any luck.
I almost get to the end of the installation when the "Extracting Files" box closes and an error message pops up saying "Setup Error: System cannot find file specified", then "Setup Error: Installation did not complete". It does this after the extraction stops on "i386updateupdate.exe"
MS windows update site will not allow manual download that I can see. It wants to download and install. Am I reading this correctly, or will it download and LET me install at my convenience? MS Instructions says to turn OFF AV before installing and I am not about to turn off AV while internet is turned on.
I am trying to download win XP, sp3, (for single computer, NOT for "IT" version) and it seems that MS does not want that to happen. I have spent the last hour searching for a MANUAL download of SP3, and not having any luck. Found several ways to get the "IT" version but there is a warning on the site, " NOT for single computers". I want to have a copy of SP3 for future needs and do not want to DISABLE AV while downloading. MS site advises to disable AV before installing SP3. Can anyone give me a link that will let me download SP3 and save to file, for individual computer?

For several weeks now I haven't been able to download/update Windows updates. I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time.
Suddenly, I noticed that Windows update no longer works. I still get automatic updates, but for some reason I can't manually update things. Anyone else seen this? If you note, they're asking to install an Active-X control, but the information bar doesn't popup to allow me to continue.
My computer has been ok until I downloaded an update version of my Video Card. Now it is very slow and it freezes up until I press Alt/Control/Del. Then I have to close a window. I will work then.
When i click the turn off computer button it is supposed to install an important security update. The update thing never goes away even though it looks like the update has been installad.

I recently ran XP SETUP to REPAIR my instalation of XP Pro. Since then, with Auto Updates set to DOWNLOAD/LET ME DECIDE WHEN TO INSTALL, the XP AUTO UPDATES have been DOWNLOADING JUST FINE BUT WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL THEM AFTER A RATHER LENGTHY PROCESS I AM NOTIFIED THAT NONE OF THEM WERE INSTALLED.
After getting the F11 restore (full factory format and reinstall) to work I went to the MS update site. This machine is running XP Pro SP1. I want to get the updates and install SP2. At the MS update site I see many updates needed and I start the download. They all download but on install they hang. Restarting gives the same problem. So I pop the SP2 disk in the drive and start it. It extracts, starts the Inventory, and hangs. Laptop doesn't freeze, the install just stops. Even tried it in Safe Mode and it hangs either on the Inventory or the next item, I forget which one.

i pulled out a program disc halfway through installation, which jammed up windows installer (every time windows was started, a message came up saying to please put in the install disc). I fixed that by finishing the installation (putting the disc back in 4 or 5 months later, we don't get to visit much), but during the time she had the problem, which was right when she got the computer,97 or so Windows Updates downloaded to the computer, but couldnt install.
These files include everything from the service packs (which are supposed to install by themselves), to critical updates. The computer is very slow at startup, and wants to install the files at shutdown. No error messages, but the files remain there wanting to install.
