Suddenly, I noticed that Windows update no longer works. I still get automatic updates, but for some reason I can't manually update things. Anyone else seen this? If you note, they're asking to install an Active-X control, but the information bar doesn't popup to allow me to continue.

When I go to windows update on the start menu I get sent to www.msn.com.Also when I click on Microsoft update it just grinds and grinds.Also when I go to the windows updates web page and try to download something manually it validates my machine and presents a clickable download button. When I click on it I get a very small windows pop up that says page not found.I can not download anything off of Microsoft's site.When I go to update superantivirus I get an error that says "There is an error trying to retrieve definitions" "Make sure your firewall is not blocking superantispyware.exe from accessing Internet"When I go to update adaware I get can' find Internet connection.

A dialog box pops up and asks me "Click to run an Active X control on this webpage?" I have to click OK in order to use the browser. I have Windows XP Pro. This just started in the last 2 days. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." I've tried numerous searches on google/forums but nothing seems to work. I tried the services.msc, Ive tried the "machine.inf" copy/paste method. Tried to reset the BIOS to default in the setup menu (not sure if i really did this right but.). Nothing seems to be working.The sound worked before I had to delete the partition and reinstall Windows XP. Had a virus or something so I had to delete the partition and reinstall like I said. It's Windows XP Professional.I got the laptop from Cyberpowerpc.com. Phoenix brand motherboard (i think that is a brand, Everest said the BIOS type was phoenix anyway, it says the actual motherboard name is Unkown). When I bought it, the sound said: Built-In AC97 Sound Card if that helps. I was pretty sure I had "Realtek AC 97" Audio driver before the crash but I'm not 100% sure on that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEver since I downloaded Windows Explorer 7 I have serious problems with ordinary functions, like double clicking on URLs or highlighted items. In hotmail it won't let me delete spam, but other clicks it allows me. Copying and pasting is also non-functional. I also use Firefox, so now I do almost everything on it.
Another problem is that my computer won't let me download programs that require Active X., not even its own Windows programs. How can I change that? I think that although I've always owned the computer, the pc doesn't recognize me as having administrative powers. That may because my computer repair guy tinkered with the controls.
XP PRO Problem Boots up to white desktop, then i have option to "RESTORE MY ACTIVE DESKTOP" Also when i click on start-all programs all i get is a grey area. I have tried restore but it does not work, any ideas ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

I've been using this laptop, and I have to deal with it for quite some time before I can replace my other one. Anyway, I've attempted to install Windows Service Pack 2 and 3 several times (I can't download or update Windows applications without it), but I haven't had any luck.
I almost get to the end of the installation when the "Extracting Files" box closes and an error message pops up saying "Setup Error: System cannot find file specified", then "Setup Error: Installation did not complete". It does this after the extraction stops on "i386updateupdate.exe"
MS windows update site will not allow manual download that I can see. It wants to download and install. Am I reading this correctly, or will it download and LET me install at my convenience? MS Instructions says to turn OFF AV before installing and I am not about to turn off AV while internet is turned on.
I am trying to download win XP, sp3, (for single computer, NOT for "IT" version) and it seems that MS does not want that to happen. I have spent the last hour searching for a MANUAL download of SP3, and not having any luck. Found several ways to get the "IT" version but there is a warning on the site, " NOT for single computers". I want to have a copy of SP3 for future needs and do not want to DISABLE AV while downloading. MS site advises to disable AV before installing SP3. Can anyone give me a link that will let me download SP3 and save to file, for individual computer?

So i went to the update page to try and install them but the search bar just keeps searching without giving me any info. I let it run for an hour then closed it.
I have tried windows update and microsoft update both have the same result.
I have a broardband connection and have never had to wait this long before.
I am using Windows XP version 2000 and intel celeron 1.2 GHZ with 256 MB RAM. My problem is that all of a sudden my Windows hangs up and when I try to soft boot it ctrl+alt+del then it doesnt work imfact no key works, everytime I hard boot it (Reset). I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? When I sign in to my server, I need to access the task manager while using remote desktop. I cannot or do not know how to invoke control alt delete from a remote desktop session., so I can see the processes running. Is there another way to see this other then with control alt del?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThrough out the day, I have my computer on. Many times... whether I am using the computer at that moment, or if I leave and come back later... my screen will be frozen. The mouse moves, but nothing on the screen can be clicked. Also, control alt delete works as well, so I have found that if I go into the applications tab and open a new task and open/refresh "explorer" everything will start working again.
