May 9, 2007When I have Automatic Updates enabled, svchost uses 100% of the CPU. I disabled svchost and am able to use the computer.
With svchost disabled, I can not use Automatic Update. With it enabled, the computer freezes.
Is there a place to update Microsoft Office without having scvhost enabled?

I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. Mar 4, 2010After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

Aug 29, 2006in my start menu -> all programs there is windows update and another called microsoft update. the icon for the windows update is the usual blue globe with the windows (4 colours emblem, its the one on your "start" button) and the icon for microsoft update is an image of a computer and an arrow pointing downwards.
in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs.
however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?

Mar 9, 2007I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.

Feb 14, 2005I can't seem to get any updates to download. I have tried both manual and auto update. I have tried checking different settings plus shut down my anti- virus and firewall and still nothing! I checked around microsoft's site and didn't find anything either. When I try to download ( even just one update at a time) I get the update file name failed.

Nov 27, 2006Should be receiving a new Intel core 2 cpu, new ram and new board tomorrow.Was planning on doing a clean windows install once i have put them into my computer. I'm pretty certain my Norton ghost image will be useless now as it was for old cpu and motherboard. It had sp2 and some other updates. But when i do a clean install i won't be able to get any updates from Microsoft because my xp is not genuine and they have this new genuine key check thing that stops updates. Is this gonna be a problem for my new setup. If it is i'm gonna have to make do 4 a bit. But will get a genuine xp if it is necessary? normally have zone alarm which i think fixes some security issues, but i just wanna know if the hardware will work correctly,say only having one core working.

I have disable it and it did not help. i have been on the phone with microsoft personnel for about 5 hours and they could not get it to download. i can download everything else that i want except microsoft updates. when they connect me to microsoft i thank they sent me to banladesh. i have a hard time trying to understand them but i got through some how, is there any thing that i can do to correct this problem , I tried to restore, but it would not after microsoft got through with using it, my computer by remote.

Jun 12, 2010ok so my computer had randomly crashed and would not boot up the operating system so i reinstalled windows xp fresh from the CD, service pack 2 and now i cant install any updates.
i've tried the solutions which tell me to go do more things, and then those won't work which say more things and its an endless cycle. Some where in this cycle its said stuff about error code 1083 for installing windows support files and something about BITS. I have no idea what to do.
SP3 Better Than SP2 - Microsoft Update
Sep 11, 2008know that it has been a long time since service pack 3 was available for download on the automatic updates for windows, and it is just now that I've decided to update my SP2 to SP3. I've been looking for reviews all around the net and I've found mixed reviews on SP3. And it's got me thinking if I should update or not.
So here are my questions . Is SP3 safer than SP2? Is it faster than SP1 or SP2? (Like increased OS speed) Are there no bugs on SP3? (Like software incompatibilities, etc.) Anything I should be aware of before I install SP3? I've read in some blogs and other forums that you should uninstall some things on your computer for you to update to SP3 successfully.I also read that some users got lots of errors when they updated to SP3, is this true? Is SP3 MUCH BETTER than SP2?

Oct 3, 2007I had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer.

Sep 9, 2008This has happened on two computers: my wife's and my parents'. Automatic updating is turned on. My wife's computer suddenly lost Internet service upon reboot. I checked everything. She had access to the Linksys router, the network properties showed she was connected to the Internet and, most importantly, I, on another computer, was connected (my auto updates was turned off). I fixed the problem by going to the Device Manager, uninstalling the network card and then scanning for hardware changes. Bing! Working again.Two days later I'm at my parents' house. I turned on their computer, updates were installed and the system restarted. Again, no Internet service despite all apparent "go" connections. Uninstalled the network card, rebooted and it worked again.
I keep my updates off because NetFramework 2 wreaks havoc with a library program I have, so no NetFramework at all. And I've had no problems. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? My wife had spent more than an hour on the phone with a tech support guy at Linksys and he had her setting up her notebook computer and changing its settings. When I got home, she was right in the middle of working with a computer that wasn't the problem. I guess this guy was paid by the hour because he was in no hurry to wrap everything up. But he told my wife that he works for several companies in tech support (real surprise there) and that MS "updates" create numerous "issues" I think they call them now.
Are These Microsoft Update Downloaded Files?
Oct 15, 2009I'm in the middle of setting a backup solution for my HDD on WindowsXP PC. I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.
