I had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer.
I recently had to re-install Windows XP, and now when the computer comes back from sleep the taskbar is at the top of the screen and is non-responsive leading me to have to restart my computer every time it goes to sleep. The easy answer would to not have the pc go to sleep, so i tried that, and even when it goes to screen saver mode, after being in that for more than 30 minutes, the problem occurs. Anyone have an idea of what is going on?
I didn't see which one it was, but its silly that it gives you no warning and I accidentally clicked the delete button on the system variables than the user variables.I've restarted my computer and so far its fine, but does anyone know what I can do to get it back? Do I need it?
My laptop running XP with SP3 suddenly no longer wants to connect to our wireless network. The icon for the wireless adapter shows "The wireless adapter is turned off" yet when I try to use the Intel Wireless Troubleshooter is says to use Fn+F2 . That seems to do nothing.
Windows Media Player 11, and Napster both say that there is an error with the sound on my laptop. The sound is turned on, and after clicking all the buttons to look at everything to do with sound on my laptop, there is no proplem, aside from the fact that there are no speekers. Here is a screeny to show what I mean. How do I get my computer to find them again? There is no way to turn the speakers off externally.

My dad is running windows XP Home edition, SP2, windows firewall, Norton's antivirus 2005, and spysweeper 4.5. Recently when windows loads, the security center notifies him that automatic updates are "turned off"; however, when he goes to "system" -> "automatic updates," it IS turned on. When I had him check "adminstration tool"--> "services," ->"automatic update," it was NOT EVEN LISTED
For a while now I have been unable to download the following updates in my computer:Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 I have Windows XP, not 7. I have tried everything I can think of. I need to get this fixed so that I can load the new Turbo Tax program. It will not load because of an error with the 3.5 sp1.
I can't seem to get any updates to download. I have tried both manual and auto update. I have tried checking different settings plus shut down my anti- virus and firewall and still nothing! I checked around microsoft's site and didn't find anything either. When I try to download ( even just one update at a time) I get the update file name failed.
Should be receiving a new Intel core 2 cpu, new ram and new board tomorrow. Was planning on doing a clean windows install once i have put them into my computer. I'm pretty certain my Norton ghost image will be useless now as it was for old cpu and motherboard. It had sp2 and some other updates. But when i do a clean install i won't be able to get any updates from Microsoft because my xp is not genuine and they have this new genuine key check thing that stops updates. Is this gonna be a problem for my new setup. If it is i'm gonna have to make do 4 a bit. But will get a genuine xp if it is necessary? normally have zone alarm which i think fixes some security issues, but i just wanna know if the hardware will work correctly, say only having one core working.
I can not download microsoft updates, i am using windows xp sp2 pro media center, using zonealarm firewall. I have disable it and it did not help. i have been on the phone with microsoft personnel for about 5 hours and they could not get it to download. i can download everything else that i want except microsoft updates. when they connect me to microsoft i thank they sent me to banladesh. i have a hard time trying to understand them but i got through some how, is there any thing that i can do to correct this problem , I tried to restore, but it would not after microsoft got through with using it, my computer by remote.
I'm sorry to keep bothering you guys but you are the only ones who have ever helped me fix anything. Here is the problem. Microsoft security update detects updates and programs needed but will not install these to my computer.(Microsoft doesn't seem to be able to help me with this)Can you help me? Tell me what information you need and I will try to comply.
ok so my computer had randomly crashed and would not boot up the operating system so i reinstalled windows xp fresh from the CD, service pack 2 and now i cant install any updates. i've tried the solutions which tell me to go do more things, and then those won't work which say more things and its an endless cycle. Some where in this cycle its said stuff about error code 1083 for installing windows support files and something about BITS. I have no idea what to do.
my computer is not allowing me to install updates from microsoft update, it will download them then will come up with a box saying could not install the following updates,
I installed the microsoft update, it gave me three updates, i downloaded, installed, and rebooted. Now, when i go to 'custom update' so i can download some of the other patches, i get this:The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.
I have had windows update problems. I am now at the point where the following show in the add or remove programs. ( No other .net framework versions show) Installed is .net.Framework 3.5 SP1 Installed is Update for Microsoft >Net Framework 3.5 SP1 (KB963707) Installed is Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP What other .net framework versions need to be installed? In what order should the versions be installed? What Web site do i download the versions from? O/S is Windows xp home sp2.
I have installed win xp sp2. What updates should I install? Are there any updates I would better not install, because of errors with programs or such? I do have a legal win xp cd, but I just don't want microsoft to scan the pc whenever they want.
I have been trying to download updates from Gateway that I need, and the following error comes up:Microsoft.NET Framework An unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click continue the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will be shut down immediately.'-1' is not a valid number for maximum. Maximum must be greater than or equal to 0.I get this same error when trying to download an update from microsoft.
This has happened on two computers: my wife's and my parents'. Automatic updating is turned on. My wife's computer suddenly lost Internet service upon reboot. I checked everything. She had access to the Linksys router, the network properties showed she was connected to the Internet and, most importantly, I, on another computer, was connected (my auto updates was turned off). I fixed the problem by going to the Device Manager, uninstalling the network card and then scanning for hardware changes. Bing! Working again. Two days later I'm at my parents' house. I turned on their computer, updates were installed and the system restarted. Again, no Internet service despite all apparent "go" connections. Uninstalled the network card, rebooted and it worked again.
I keep my updates off because NetFramework 2 wreaks havoc with a library program I have, so no NetFramework at all. And I've had no problems. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? My wife had spent more than an hour on the phone with a tech support guy at Linksys and he had her setting up her notebook computer and changing its settings. When I got home, she was right in the middle of working with a computer that wasn't the problem. I guess this guy was paid by the hour because he was in no hurry to wrap everything up. But he told my wife that he works for several companies in tech support (real surprise there) and that MS "updates" create numerous "issues" I think they call them now.
I did a full HP system restore and the Computer guy who came to my house installed the Service Pack 3, the latest version. I used to have Service Pack 1. I have had quite a few problems since then because of the full system restore and having to re-install alot of my programs, etc. But anyway I noticed today, that down in my system tray (or whatever you call it) on the bottom right of my computer where all the little icons are, there is this Microsoft Updates Automatic Updater with the yellow shield and it said that an update ready to install so I tried installing it. And this is what it said:
Automatic Updates Some updates could not be installed The following updates were not installed: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 ....SO- that seems like a conflict since my computer had Service Pack 3 and the Microsoft Updates is trying to install this Service Pack 1 thing. What should I do? Do I have to get it all in sync somehow and is this messing up things on my computer? Also does this mean I am missing out on all the correct updates for my computer?
I`m new around here and I have been given a task to update multiple computers with Microsoft updates offline. the updates will be sorted on a network drive. how do I create the bat file. if its possible to get the whole script on how to do that
Ive only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
