I am on a fresh clean install of Windows XP and Windows has already updated five times now. Windows is set for automatically download recommended updates and install them. I turned on my computer tonight and it downloading updates again for a total of six times now, when will it stop? I am starting to worrie here.
View 6 RepliesI did an in-place repair of XP MCE 2003. I had previously installed all MS security fixes and updates, the list in my "installed programs" showed about 70 or 80 updates. The in-place repair gave me an unscrambled registry, and an unpatched XP install, without touching my installed programs or data. A good thing, overall, it fixed my major problem.
I immediately went to get all the updates -- 76 of them downloaded. I don't let Updater install automatically -- I get all the updates, but decide which to install because I got a bad version of IE7 that took me a long time to delete and recover from, but I installed ALL security updates. I generally use FireFox, so I didn't view IE7 as a security update. Anyway, it installed one or two updates, and then said the rest could not be installed....
I use earthlink DSL and the offered a clean up system for free (PC finetune) so I tried it because my computer was a little slow. Well, after installing and rebooting up dates came up. I let in automatically install updates. I know 'stupid'. I now have it set to notify me before installing. Anyway, one of the updates was some version on windows explorer. It is always attempting to Install. It doesn't say what what it is installing. I look on the internet and one told me how to find out what it is attempting to install. It came back as "3.1.400.5512" I'm think that is internet explorer 3.1 not sure. It slows my computer, won't let me go online because it interfers with the sign on window pop up.

Well, I'd like to install them now, but the little yellow shield isnt in the system tray anymore. Is there a way to install them? I went to the microsoft website and the automatic scan says I have all of the most recent updates (yeah, I have them, but cant find them now).

I receive a yellow shield on my task bar informing me that updates are ready to install, I click the update button and it tells me to install service pack 3. I try the install and when I get to the halfway point of Performing Inventory I receive an error message: Service pack 3 could not back up registry value....ABORT-RETRY-IGNORE. no matter what button I select the results are the same Failed to Install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust experienced a very strange situation. We have several hundred XP clients on an NT Domain. We disable windows firewall. Over the weekend we upgraded our NT 4 Domain to Windows 2003 Mixed Mode Active Directory. We are now seeing today and yesterday some machines have the windows firewall enabled. We discoverd the problem due to an older legacy application we have had stopped working. The application was working yesterday (2 days after the upgrade) but today it was not. The machines experiencing the problem are located in seperate office and seperate departments. so far we have seen only about 15 with the firewall enabled. As we just upgraded we dont have any GPO's in place that would enable this. We dont have any other automated
customization tools that were configured to do this either.Is there any log file or any way to determine when/by who the firewall was enabled. The users of the machines dont have admin rights so we know it was
not them.
I had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer.

Spent two weeks with windows update helpers and could not get them to install. Kept getting the message "Insufficiet system resources exist to complete the request". I have tried to clean up my computer, deleting temp files, histories, unused programs and they still will not load. On some of the attempts to delete old programs I do not use, I would get the same message and the program would not delete. Even bought System Mechanic 8.5 tried to install it and it won't install. View 14 Replies View RelatedI know that this is a lot to ask in one thread but they all do relate (I think ) I spotted a program listed in program fills that I have never seen before: Authentium. It had a file listed in it as: AuthFw.exe. When I Googled that it led me to a link to Tech Support Guy were member LOgic posted the following post: "As of late My computer has begun to lock up for no apparent reason. What happens is the following. When i go to click on any program none of them respond. I cant alt ctrl delete cause that window doesnt come up. I then click on the start menu and all the icons for the window update and microsoft update and such are not there as if the it doesnt recognize what program to read them with. I then proceed to restart my computer And The old menu pops up. As in not the 3 big red buttons that confirm log out, turn off and restart but a grey box that gives me the same options plus asking me if i want it to hibernate or stand by. Then when the computer is turning of normally it gives a big blue screen saying " windows is shutting down" But what happened when this computer locks up is that a logo of home edition appears in a small grey box and tells me its shutting down. Is my computer going into some kind of safe mode on its own? Every time i leave the computer own on its own?If someone can please help me with this problem it would be great.
I was in shock because it repeated the problems that I have been having and after many attempts have failed to solve. Let me add that I have as LOgic started using a different sound card. actually I removed SoundBlaster and started using the onboard audio on the motherboard (ECS 848P-A) which has Realtek AC97 Audio. I have updated the drivers for this and searched everywhere I can think of to see if this is the problem. LOgic's problem was apparently solved when he went to windows update and updated a driver. My problem is that often when I go to windows update it will down load updates but fail to install them. When this happens as it did just tonight, it takes me days to get support from Microsoft to help me resolve this issue. I have reached a point that MS is a dirty word that I try not to say anymore.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP. It was running fine until last night, when it automatically installed 8 updates before shutting down. This morning, there is a problem. I turn on the computer. It works fine for about 2 minutes, then slows down and won't respond for at least 20 seconds to anything. The fan is running loud as though it is "thinking" about something or working really hard even though I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. If I want to shut down, I have to do it manually. Then, when I restart, it works for 2 minutes and slows again. In those first 2 minutes, I tried checking my email, using a couple programs, etc. and they work fine until it decides to slow down. I have restarted it about 5 times with the same results every time.

This usually happens as I shut down, when I have notification that updates are being downloaded and installed and the computer will shut itself off afterwards.All has been well until this week. I found that there were still 2 updates waiting for installation. I checked the little sheild and tried to download and install manually. I had a 'failed' notice.The two updates are - Microsoft excel 2003 KB955466 and Microsoft Outlook 2003 junk email filter KB957257.I am not too worried about these as I do not use Outlook, and rarely use excel. After the Windows logo appeared, received STOP error 7E, with no driver mentioned. (1st variable if needed is 0x0000006). Turned machine off, restarted. Same thing. Tried again, this time trying Safe Mode. I get the message "Setup cannot continue in Safe Mode, Click OK to restart".
View 9 Replies View RelatedMacAfee automatically updated and said it needed to restart. So I hit restart as nothing was running at the time. When the computer tried to restart it took FOREVER, at least 5 minutes. When it finally did come up, none of the links work. I treid to get into System Restore, it said System Restore had been turned off. News to me I never turn System Restore off. No access to the internet. Go to printers it shows no printers installed. Most programs, if you try to run them they either don't open, or open and close abruptly, or with McAfee it opens with nothing inside the box. Or if you try to do something like turn the System Restore on, the program stops responding. I actually did a registry edit to turn it on, but it still won't let me set a new restore point, and it says there are no old restore points. Basically the computer is totally unusable.So now I boot in SAFE MODE. Doesn't do much for me but allows me to look around. So I reboot in SAFE MODE Directory Services which says the drive is clean and the computer now works great in this Directory Services mode.

It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? Unfortunately, the power got turned off partway through this, and now the computer won't boot up. I tried putting the Windows CD in to run a repair installation, but it still gets stuck.I get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, but when I press a key there are two lines of text that appear and disappear too quickly for me to read them, and then it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, and doesn't do anything else.
View 13 Replies View RelatedIt has an MSI board, Celeron D cedermill at 2.2ghz. Western Digital 160gb sata drive. I don't think any of that really matters, but heres the problem. When trying to install windows XP, after loading all the drivers it needs and it gets to 'starting windows' a blue screen comes up saying something like 'your system was turned off to prevent further damage. The hard drive works fine in another system, and so doesn't installing xp. I put the hard drive with xp installed. It tries to load, same screen. But it installs windows 2000 without glitch.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThings worked well until I connected a USB 2.0 Sony DVD burner [ owned by an associate ]. With PC & Sony burner turned off, I connected the Sony burner. Booted to Windows. Turned on Sony. Windows identified mass storage device & Sony burner. I re-started, and can't get beyond the Win XP Startup menu. Suggestions other than FFR [ fdisk, format, re-install ] and booting with the CD [ yes, I have an official Microsoft Win XP SP1 disk ] to run the repair will be appreciated. Also, I'm not interested in Linux, MAC or any other OS at this time. Soon, perhaps, but not tonight.
