May 22, 2007I have windows XP SP2. from the past 3-4 weeks or so im having serious update problems on my laptop.when automatic updates are turned on, i get an svchost error everytime, and then my internet doesnt work and laptop doesnt switch off! so my automatic updates are off. wen i do it manually from microsoft update i get another error saying:The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Aug 12, 2005This is very confusing. I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.

Aug 13, 2008when I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.
I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all. I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter....

Oct 3, 2007I had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer.

My computer recently changed when I start up my computer by pushing the start botton it would boot up and show my selected background screen and then I could click on my ISP Icon on my desktop to go online. My problem is when I now push the computer start botton my computer boots up but then shows a blue background screen with My Name and NO password which I never supplied, but I have to click O K and then it brings up my selected background screen to enable to
click on my ISP Icon to go online. I have went into User Accounts and have found NO WAY to remove my Name. I have recently set my computer up to go on my DSL online automatically and it won't until I click O K on the user box.

Mar 2, 2008I was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'

Unable To Open Microsoft Websites - Firewall Turned Off
Jan 6, 2009Iam anable to open any MS websites either with IE7 or FireFox. Able to open other websites. I have tried adding "s"to the "http"protocol,but no luck. Then went to internet options and unticked the "tsl"option in Advanced tab,again no luck! Thus iam not able to manually download updates.The XP pro has SP2 and SP3 installed. All the drivers are in place.To add to my woes ,SAS PRO and MBAM are not getting updates too!To survive i have installed AVG 8 Anti-virus and it too is not getting updated! Aug 6, 2008This problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.
When To Trust Automatic Updates?
Sep 28, 2007Can anyone help me to understand the following behavior I have seen on my system regarding Windows auto updates.On 2 different occasions there have been 20+ recommended windows updates. Initially there were just 2 (Windows Installer 3.1 and KB898461). I noticed there were 20+ after opening Outlook Express for the first time (which auto loaded windows messenger and put itself in the registry to run before my security programs). I changed my settings on outlook express, and messenger (and removed it from the registry). After changing this and rebooting my recommended updates went back down to 2.Again I noticed that my updates jumped back up, after I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I ran ccleaner, checked my registry and rebooted - they were gone again (back down to the same 2 I started with). I am not installing these updates, and am now wondering if I really should be installing them or not. Why are they appearing and then disappearing? How do I know if they are safe? Is it possible that a virus or hijacker could be creating these false updates. or am I being too cautious. I am definitely a bit suspect to lots of behavior on my computer now as I am recovering from a nasty virus that somehow took over my system while I was running Norton Security. I used to do automatic updates, but have now changed it to notify me. I am also running better security progams.

Dec 26, 2008I am running XP sp2. The other day i noticed that i hadn't had any new updates since April 08. I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. Does anyone know how i can solve this please?
