Cannot Turn Of Disable Automatic Restart
Mar 2, 2008
I was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'

I have searched around a bit to see if others have ran into this problem, but I have had no luck so far. When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

Okay so I usually leave my computer on all the time. I went to bed and when I got up it was off and couldn't get it to turn on. So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

I have been trying to disable automatic downloads using the Control Panel. firstly using the "Automatic Download" icon.that produced a respite of 1 or 2 days before the little yellow shield appeared at the bottom of my screen again.then i tried using the "Administrative tools" section. this also produced a temporary lull but the yellow shield keeps reappearing

This is very confusing. I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.

when I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.
I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all. I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter....

I have tried to look for a similar problem here at TSG, but I couldn't find one so I decided to post. I have a desktop computer that I got about a year ago, it's running XP Pro on Pentium 4 3.2GHz system, has 512 ram and I think a 200Gb HDD. Lately it has been restarting, usually when I try to, eg: listen to music and surf the web, which is nothing strenuous, especially for a computer which I thought was pretty good. All of a sudden though, it has just restarted itself and, and as soon as it gets to the Windows XP loading screen, it restarts again and again. I can never get past the XP loading screen. I have a lot of valuable information on the computer and so I was hoping that someone would be able to help me fix this issue without formatting if possible.

My computer keeps restarting after me being on it for around 5 mintues, sometimes less, sometimes I can go for about 30 minutes before it restarts. I have tried my virus scan and adaware but it will not go through because it restarts constantly. It was missing some file I can not remember what it was. Also the last time it restarted I got these errors. Error Loading Language Resource DLL (na EvtRes.dll) and Runtime Error

After installing Windows XP and all service packs and applications I am likely to use on it, I find it useful to disable services I am not likely to use on it to a bare minimum using MSCONFIG to stop additional CPU/MEM usage going on in the background. Here is a list of those services that I use, based on the fact that I have a cable broadband connection that is always on, and a Soundblaster Live Value Soundcard Go into Start Menu, Open RUN command, type MSCONFIG Goto SERVICES tab, select DISABLE ALL, APPLY, and check the following services to start with Windows and hit APPLY afterwards DHCP Client - AUTOMATIC Plug and Play - AUTOMATIC Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - AUTOMATIC Windows Audio - AUTOMATIC
There are also a few other services I use but not all the time, these are listed below and I would either put them on MANUAL if I use them sometimes or DISABLE them completely if I didn't use them at all Goto START MENU, PROGRAMS, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES, and modify the following by right clicking...

it usually happens when im like working on it for about 2hrs or something. the pc would go dead, and reboot. or windows would hang, and from the hard disk led, i can see that it is all busy and unavailable. ta ta. its getting on my nerves. i just recovered my system from new.net, and now i have slower internet connection. no nothing wrong with the isp. i suspect there maybe reminents of the old virus still holding back windows. could my fears turn out to be true? i have had the liberty of posting my HJT log here, so do point out anything suspicious and also anything that could slow down the system..

Every time when I turn off my computer, the machine shows "Now is safe to turn or your computer" message. I know there is a way to disable this but just don't know how. I do some search on this website, and found out we can have this fix by enabling the Advanced Power Management Support at Control Panel. However, my computer doesn't have the APM option under the Power Option. I have W2K install on this machine. I did fix this problem before by editing the registry but just forget how to do it.

I have a couple of problems, but I also have a possible solution and would like to have a bit of guidance as to whether or not I'm doing the right thing.
First of all, I will admit to making a couple of mistakes, first I have not backed up ANY data on my hard drive (actually I have 2 on my laptop) and secondly I lost my patience when laptop froze recently and just pulled the plug. Lessons learned!
OK, on booting up the laptop, I get the "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start...blah blah" with the BSOD, which after disabling automatic restart, I could read. BTW none of the safe mode options work, the last known good config.

When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will automatically restart, ofter it will restart too fast for you to see the error message. You could check the error log in this case but that is too easy. We are going to disable auto restart on system failure.
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

Im running windows xp home edition with sp2. To turn off my pc,i usually click on start in the taskbar, then the options to stand-by,turn off or restart appear,I then click on turn off,and the pc does the rest,it turns the pc off and the monitor. Now when i go through the process of turning it off, i do everything as described above, but instead of shutting off,it just acts as if i did nothing,i am left staring at the desktop and can just continue to use it as normal. So i have come to the conclusion that some sort of virus or something (i am doing a virus sweep as i am writting) has turned off the auto shutdown function,What i'd really love to know is can anyone tell me how i can turn this feature back on,i also forgot to add, that u cannot log off either, the same thing happens.

My laptop will not boot into windows at all. not into safe mode, or any other option i'm given. It gets to the windows logo and crashes, a quick flash of a bluescreen which i can't see the error, and restarts. I also do not have the option to disable the restart so i can see this code too.I booted the windows recovery and at the DOS prompt i tried doing chckdsk, fixboot, fixmbr.

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

All of a sudden, in the last couple of days, I find that I have to go through my Start>Turn off Computer > Restart twice in order for the computer to restart. Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.
