Disable - Now Is Safe To Turn Or Your Computer
May 5, 2005
Every time when I turn off my computer, the machine shows "Now is safe to turn or your computer" message. I know there is a way to disable this but just don't know how. I do some search on this website, and found out we can have this fix by enabling the Advanced Power Management Support at Control Panel. However, my computer doesn't have the APM option under the Power Option. I have W2K install on this machine. I did fix this problem before by editing the registry but just forget how to do it.

I have a Compaq Presario 5320 US, XP Pro, 768 MB Ram 1.5 GHz CPU. It works fine until I shut it down. Then I get a Black Windows screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer" I have updated the bios. Anyway to fix this so I don't have to manually press the button to power it off at that point?

I was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

I want to get rid of whatever is causing my computer to act like it's firewalled.I'm currently studying in Japan and have ADSL in the dorms. It seemed to be firewalled, but no one else I asked really knew much about it, so I just kind of accepted it and moved on. But recently one of my friends in Tokyo has gotten a new internet connection, which her computer works perfectly on and gets amazing speed. But when I connect, it still seems I am firewalled. Using PC Flank's scanner pcflank.com all my ports are stealthed while hers are closed.

OS= Windows XP. When I turn on my computer, I get this: Log On Message: The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct, then type your password again. Then, I get this: Log on to Windows: User name: HP_Administrator Password _________________
At that point, I do not even have to enter a password, I just click "ok" and it starts up. But the extra steps are a pain. My computer just recently started doing this. How can I turn off or disable this "log on" stuff? I've tried dinking around at Control Panel>User Accounts, but I do not seem to be able to resolve the problem.

I'm in need of finding out what services are enabled and what are not as the 'tech' that worked on my computer disabled many services to make my computer go faster. I didn't want it faster I wanted it usable and functional. If you could point me to a list or provide a list that would be awesome.

I've never had any problems with my computer in the past, I look after it as well as I know how but have recently been having problems with The Sims 3 (a lot of people are having issues with it). My problems related only to the game play and I had them sorted out and fixed finally. I played today when it crashed on me. After about an hour of waiting I still could do nothing to get the crashed game off. I had tried all the key commands I know, including the obvious ctrl + alt + del but still it was going nowhere so I switched my computer off at the tower. I know, stupid, but I could see the waiting game was getting me nowhere.
Anyway, now whenever I turn the computer on, it does the initial load, then it takes me to that black screen asking if I want to run it in safe mode or start it as usual and after that screen, it starts to load up windows but stops and takes me to a blue screen. This is the message on the blue screen - A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.....

5 minutes to turn off that is 5 minutes (or more) from clicking Turn Off to actual power off. The closing Windows XP theme and desktop disappears quickly as they should, but the hard drive goes into super drive activity light constantly on for almost 5 minutes. This happens every time and it began happening a few months ago, but I have not been able to track down the culprit or setting. Keep in mind that I clean my registry regularly, and optimize my system as best I can. I know Im running more apps than I should for peak performance, but as I said, the real slow down started long after I was running these apps.BTW the booting time is not nearly as slow. Im running XP Pro sp2, 2GB RAM, 2MHz CPU, 100GB drive, on a Sony Vaio laptop.

how to get rid of the C: Drive directory listing appearing every time I start my computer? I don't knw how it got set up to come up each time, but I would like to unset it. I have Windows XP and recently installed AOL's Security 9.0, which was an updated version of the old one I was using. Shortly thereafter, or as soon as this was done, the directory thing started. I think it was there virus scanning system, so I have a different one now.

I saw a forum like this before, but considering the fact that I'm really dumb with computers, I'm hoping someone can run me through what I'm supposed to do to fix the problem.I'm having the same problem as I found here on this thread, The computer's just been reformatted with Windows XP Home Edition earlier this week and starting yesterday, I could not access the "Turn off Computer" in the Start Menu. I also do not have access to the "Run" option nor can I "Control+Atl+Del"

To restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.

I noticed that i have a weird problem. After resuming from hibernation, I noticed that whenever i want to shut the PC thru clicking the "Start" button and then "Turn off computer", nothing happens at all - just the screen refreshes and nothing more than that. It's supposed that i should get that famous dialog which would allow 2 me 2 shut, restart or log off or... but nothing really come up at all. This happens only when i resume from hibernation but it's working OK if i bring the PC to work thru cold booting. But when hibernating and then resuming, it's not working again ANY explanation to this strange behavior.

First time user, and at my whit's end with my computer. Bear with me as my computer knowledge is very limited. I have a Gateway 2.8 GHZ celeron with 1GB of ram. I also have a Radeon Video Card (forgot the exact model). I went to activate my computer from standby mode and it would not come up. I did a hard reboot and when windows came back up it was real slow and the computer monitor did not "turn on" until it entered windows. It seemed to be in safe mode. No icons were available on the desktop and the background I had was reduced in size and surrounded by the basic green background color. The other colors are also screwed up, the seemed very basic. I was able to get McAfees to come up and am currently running a virus scan. The start button with it's options is available but with very limited use. I tried a system restore, but the window would not appear. Whatever I open seems to open the window on the far left side of the screen beyond the reach of the mouse. Bottom line is the computer is, for the most part, inoperable.

I've got a laptop with windows XP. About a half hour ago, it shut itself off. When I tried to restart it, I got the error window that explains something went wrong, and offers to start it in normal mode or safe mode. I select normal mode, it'll show the loading screen, then shut itself off. Rinse, repeat, same result. This laptop is about 3 1/2 years old.

One of the things we enjoy most about computer is burning music cd's. I have been burning cd's for over 10 years. I use Music Match, and I burn regular cd's as well as mp3 disks. (my husband is blind and it is very very nice for him not to have to change disks often). In the past week, when I try to burn a cd, the computer freezes about 80% of the way through, and I have to turn off machine, and start over. I have been working with technical support at Music Match and they have been extremely helpful, but I still cannot burn a cd. I think I have a computer problem.
