how to get rid of the C: Drive directory listing appearing every time I start my computer? I don't knw how it got set up to come up each time, but I would like to unset it. I have Windows XP and recently installed AOL's Security 9.0, which was an updated version of the old one I was using. Shortly thereafter, or as soon as this was done, the directory thing started. I think it was there virus scanning system, so I have a different one now.
I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.
I have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed. I am trying to clean the temp directory but I am being told that the files are in use. I have diabled everything including the internet and still get this.It has slowed my computer down and it is only 1 yeear old and I can not do much.

I am having problems with a dell inspiron 1150 Laptop computer that will not turn on. It is connected to a electrical power cable, and does not have the battery. the power cable is working fine.
I've never had any problems with my computer in the past, I look after it as well as I know how but have recently been having problems with The Sims 3 (a lot of people are having issues with it). My problems related only to the game play and I had them sorted out and fixed finally. I played today when it crashed on me. After about an hour of waiting I still could do nothing to get the crashed game off. I had tried all the key commands I know, including the obvious ctrl + alt + del but still it was going nowhere so I switched my computer off at the tower. I know, stupid, but I could see the waiting game was getting me nowhere.
Anyway, now whenever I turn the computer on, it does the initial load, then it takes me to that black screen asking if I want to run it in safe mode or start it as usual and after that screen, it starts to load up windows but stops and takes me to a blue screen. This is the message on the blue screen - A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.....
5 minutes to turn off that is 5 minutes (or more) from clicking Turn Off to actual power off. The closing Windows XP theme and desktop disappears quickly as they should, but the hard drive goes into super drive activity light constantly on for almost 5 minutes. This happens every time and it began happening a few months ago, but I have not been able to track down the culprit or setting. Keep in mind that I clean my registry regularly, and optimize my system as best I can. I know Im running more apps than I should for peak performance, but as I said, the real slow down started long after I was running these apps.BTW the booting time is not nearly as slow. Im running XP Pro sp2, 2GB RAM, 2MHz CPU, 100GB drive, on a Sony Vaio laptop.
I woke up this morning and left the computer on from last night. The screen had red stripes going threw it and windows logo. So I push the power button to try and restart it and turn it off.So I turned it off the waited a few seconds and turn it back on.The lights came on and the fan came on but the computer never came on, it just kept beeping every five seconds. If some one could help I have no idea why its doing this.
I'm working on an HP Pavilion 513n. When I turn the computer on it beeps 1-3-3-1. I recently upgraded the memory module. The screen is black and does nothing. I went to a few different sites that talk about beep codes and that code is 28 Autosize DRAM. What does that mean? Also how can I get into the bios?
when i turn it on it goes all the way to the windows xp logo thing but then it turns off and restarts and does the same thing over and over again...i managed to get in to my computer with safe mode ..and tryed system restore..but it didnt fix anything it says it has a problem with the drives or somthing like that
my computer won't shut down, it just restarts, it look like it will shut down, there is blue screen, than black, and when i think that it's over it just starts again, just like i press the button. i tried every tips nad tricks which i found on forrums (reinstall nVidia drives, power, USB ports...) but i didn't solve my problem
In Windows XP Home Edition I have 2 account with differit name. Both is administrator computer. One of this wont log off and I cannot restart, my computer, not even with my Task Manager .I receive the message: -1. program is active, but this is not visible.
-2.The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: Klick szkg (error)
Every time when I turn off my computer, the machine shows "Now is safe to turn or your computer" message. I know there is a way to disable this but just don't know how. I do some search on this website, and found out we can have this fix by enabling the Advanced Power Management Support at Control Panel. However, my computer doesn't have the APM option under the Power Option. I have W2K install on this machine. I did fix this problem before by editing the registry but just forget how to do it.
I saw a forum like this before, but considering the fact that I'm really dumb with computers, I'm hoping someone can run me through what I'm supposed to do to fix the problem.I'm having the same problem as I found here on this thread, The computer's just been reformatted with Windows XP Home Edition earlier this week and starting yesterday, I could not access the "Turn off Computer" in the Start Menu. I also do not have access to the "Run" option nor can I "Control+Atl+Del"
To restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.
I noticed that i have a weird problem. After resuming from hibernation, I noticed that whenever i want to shut the PC thru clicking the "Start" button and then "Turn off computer", nothing happens at all - just the screen refreshes and nothing more than that. It's supposed that i should get that famous dialog which would allow 2 me 2 shut, restart or log off or... but nothing really come up at all. This happens only when i resume from hibernation but it's working OK if i bring the PC to work thru cold booting. But when hibernating and then resuming, it's not working again ANY explanation to this strange behavior.
First time user, and at my whit's end with my computer. Bear with me as my computer knowledge is very limited. I have a Gateway 2.8 GHZ celeron with 1GB of ram. I also have a Radeon Video Card (forgot the exact model). I went to activate my computer from standby mode and it would not come up. I did a hard reboot and when windows came back up it was real slow and the computer monitor did not "turn on" until it entered windows. It seemed to be in safe mode. No icons were available on the desktop and the background I had was reduced in size and surrounded by the basic green background color. The other colors are also screwed up, the seemed very basic. I was able to get McAfees to come up and am currently running a virus scan. The start button with it's options is available but with very limited use. I tried a system restore, but the window would not appear. Whatever I open seems to open the window on the far left side of the screen beyond the reach of the mouse. Bottom line is the computer is, for the most part, inoperable.
I was having issues with spyware, and got those taken care of. But now, when I turn on the computer to log into windows, i get to the welcome and it starts to load windows. it loads the wallpaper, and then nothing. it'll just sit there. Short of reformatting,
I've got a laptop with windows XP. About a half hour ago, it shut itself off. When I tried to restart it, I got the error window that explains something went wrong, and offers to start it in normal mode or safe mode. I select normal mode, it'll show the loading screen, then shut itself off. Rinse, repeat, same result. This laptop is about 3 1/2 years old.
After pressing the start button, and going to either retart or turn off, this does not work I have to press the power button on the pc tower for at least 2 minutes. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
One of the things we enjoy most about computer is burning music cd's. I have been burning cd's for over 10 years. I use Music Match, and I burn regular cd's as well as mp3 disks. (my husband is blind and it is very very nice for him not to have to change disks often). In the past week, when I try to burn a cd, the computer freezes about 80% of the way through, and I have to turn off machine, and start over. I have been working with technical support at Music Match and they have been extremely helpful, but I still cannot burn a cd. I think I have a computer problem.
i have a question that has risen out of pure laziness: does anyone know how in the world i can set up my PC to power up using any press of the keyboard or movement of the mouse?i know it's possible, but i haven't been able to figure it out. i'd rather use my keyboard/mouse as opposed to bending down and pressing the power button every time.
windows xpwhen I turn off my computer it usually takes 4 minutes to turn off, no matter if I just turn the computer on and do nothing. I turned it on for a hour and did nothing and it took 3 minutes to shut off
when i go to turn on my computer, the regular short system beep is longer and then nothing happens, then it beeps again... and so on and so forth. prior to this problem my computer was running pretty unstable, for about 2 days it would reboot whenever it wanted and a couplke times i got a bluescreen message that i dont remember. i didnt write it down cuz im a moron, i have a feeling it has something to do with a surge and the power supply and im hoping i can just get a new better power supply.
I recently put together a new computer. I have used it for about a week now, today I got home and my computer won't turn on. I am guessing bad power supply but wanted to check if it might be something else.
The mother board that I have is a Biostar K8NHA GRAND Socket 754 ATX Motherboard, DDR400, 1394, SATA RAID, 6ch Audio & GB LAN
I have a Gateway computer with Windows XP. I believe my computer keeps going into stand by mode. The power button is orange instead of green. When this happens I am not able to turn my computer back on. I have to unplug everything. When I plug it back in, the light is usually still orange but I just keep hitting the on and off button until it finally turns green and the computer will start up. I will now shut my computer down at night but when I get up in the morning the light on the computer is orange again.

(How much it will hold, kind of memory, etc) what I need to know for sure (I guess for some support) All I have to do is turn her computer off take out the 128Mb put in the two sticks of 256 and reboot the computer should recognize the different and more memory. (right ?) Also does; anyone no what the name of that program is that you can use to see if your new memory is working?? I had it and don't no what happened to it. If you no please point me in the right direction. and let me know if I am right about changing the memory.
After a period of time my computer will turn itself back on. This is after I have completely shut the systems down. I have never found if there is a fixed time period that this happens. What I mean is I don't know if it happens after two, three, four hours. All I know is that when I get up in the morning the computer is back on.
