Computer Gives A Long Beep - Wont Turn On
Jun 16, 2005
when i go to turn on my computer, the regular short system beep is longer and then nothing happens, then it beeps again... and so on and so forth. prior to this problem my computer was running pretty unstable, for about 2 days it would reboot whenever it wanted and a couplke times i got a bluescreen message that i dont remember. i didnt write it down cuz im a moron, i have a feeling it has something to do with a surge and the power supply and im hoping i can just get a new better power supply.

Windows XP SP2 seems to be working normally, when I click Shut Down the computer proceeds to turn off. Afterwards the harddrive powers-down, the fans stop running, etc. Then for no reason, the computer turns back on after a brief period of time off (varied: 1hr, 15min, 8 sec) as if someone pushed the power button.I did not install any new software, or update/added on new hardware when this problem started to happen. Im unable to trace the source of this error

After I click "Turn off computer" in the start menu, I get an hourglass and it takes over a minute for the Turn off/restart/log off box to come up. Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

My PC seems to be in a 2 minute beep pattern. After the beep I generally lose my mouse for a couple of seconds. I can live with the noise, I can't live with disruption.
I've rebooted and it still beeps. I've turned off the Google desktop, I've uninstalled a stack of applications that should have been gone ages ago. I've even found my 2003 startuplist.exe and run

I have a problem in my PC that as I switched on its power, a beep sounded three times and then stopped. Monitor LED was blank; no any message appeared at it while monitor LED continuously blinked. I opened the PC cover and found that LEDs at mother board were illuminated. I re-tighten all the plugs, checked the power supply but all is ok.

How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

About a year ago a friend gave me her old Dell Dimension XPS-550.I added a second hard drive of 160Gigs, CD Burner and boosted the memory up to 640Megs.Then I formatted the hard drive that was on it.I bought a full version of XP but when I tried to install it it required Windows 98 first. So I installed my 98SE then installed XP.When it is turned on it comes up with the DELL logo, which I understand is burned into the chip, then a black screen giving the option of hitting ALT C to get to SCSI setup.I have no scsi devices. It has always taken a long time to boot but today is the first time I have put a stop watch to it 4 mins, 37 seconds. My wife's Dell takes less than a minute.I have installed all the WINDOWS UPDATES and SP2.But the very slow boot time is nothing new but has been a pain since the beginning.I run ad-aware and spybot S&D often and nothing out of the ordinary there.I have Bell South DSL and use AOL.

Running XP Home, SP2 w/1 gig. All of a sudden my machine is taking too long to finish a boot. I've not added any soft or hardware before this started.Specifically, the Welcome screen stays up for 30 seconds. Then I get a blank desktop and 30 seconds more elapse before the icons appear. Finally, it takes 1:40 before all tray icons are in place so my total boot time is over 2 1/2 minutes.I've reviewed all Start up items in MSConfig and in my Start up folder, and have run a non-destructive restore. I've used Registry First Aid to check on registry content, and, of course, a virus scan (NAV), and have also defragged.

"where to get the free/cheaper software that can do they followings:
Limit the hours of using computer. Automatically computer log off after hours. Setup the days to use computer. Block specific website Stop them from playing games from the internet/computer too Stop each user from downloading as set up by Admin. And all those that Admin can do to prevent the kids from.
To the online games, the bill for the internet is too high because of online playing, watching movies, surfing the web each after each.

I have windows XP and it takes a while to boot up before going to the windows xp screen. While I'm waiting for it i see white bars that look like this:(they connect when it loads)Before this problem i had my power supply replaced. It worked normally when i got the computer back but i had some blue screens saying 'memory dump'Then the slow bar problem appeared. There was a problem with the system32/config file being missing or corrupt. It said to use the recovery console to repair but I didn't know how, so I just reformatted.

Just for the heck of it I timed out how long it took for my (Windows XP) operating system to boot up. It turned out to be about 3' minutes and 8" seconds (+/-).I do have several programs that are included in my startup (antivirus, firewall, spyware protector, form filler,it could be reduced if necessary, but I consider all of them pretty essential for my usage. I have a Pentium 4, 1.8 Ghz chip with 1 Gig of RAM.

I use XP Media Center, Avast AV, new computer, and I'm an intermediate user. Yesterday, after rebooting the desktop, start menu and taskbar began flashing with a system beep. What I mean by "flashing" is the taskbar and start button would go off, the system would beep, then they return and do it again and again. It is working right now but I'm lucky for that. I ran a virus scan and spyware scan and my system has been cleaned, defragged and a disk scan has been performed (no negative results). When I boot in Safe Mode, it's ok. I did the elimination process through MSConfig and when the services are stopped, the problem is not apparent. Turn them on, and it's there again. Here is my Hijack report below......

When I booting up and Im connected to the network with my lan connection it boots up in no time, but when Im not on the domain using the machine at home it takes about 5 min to boot up. Why would this be and can I do something to fix it? I should add that my laptop that I had before had the same software and settings but did not take 5 min to boot up when not on the network.

Allright I have just recentley reinstalled XP. This reinstall was precipitated by the fact that I tried to reboot yesterday, and got the strange grey sector bar across the bottom of a blank monitor, which at the time I though was a very bad sign.... hence the reinstall of XP.I should note that I had been planning on reinstalling soon, as I had run a lot of intensive software thru this install, testing various spyware, regmechs, so it wasnt much of a choice/surprise reinstalling XPHome...

I've never had any problems with my computer in the past, I look after it as well as I know how but have recently been having problems with The Sims 3 (a lot of people are having issues with it). My problems related only to the game play and I had them sorted out and fixed finally. I played today when it crashed on me. After about an hour of waiting I still could do nothing to get the crashed game off. I had tried all the key commands I know, including the obvious ctrl + alt + del but still it was going nowhere so I switched my computer off at the tower. I know, stupid, but I could see the waiting game was getting me nowhere.
Anyway, now whenever I turn the computer on, it does the initial load, then it takes me to that black screen asking if I want to run it in safe mode or start it as usual and after that screen, it starts to load up windows but stops and takes me to a blue screen. This is the message on the blue screen - A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.....

5 minutes to turn off that is 5 minutes (or more) from clicking Turn Off to actual power off. The closing Windows XP theme and desktop disappears quickly as they should, but the hard drive goes into super drive activity light constantly on for almost 5 minutes. This happens every time and it began happening a few months ago, but I have not been able to track down the culprit or setting. Keep in mind that I clean my registry regularly, and optimize my system as best I can. I know Im running more apps than I should for peak performance, but as I said, the real slow down started long after I was running these apps.BTW the booting time is not nearly as slow. Im running XP Pro sp2, 2GB RAM, 2MHz CPU, 100GB drive, on a Sony Vaio laptop.
