I have a Compaq Presario 5320 US, XP Pro, 768 MB Ram 1.5 GHz CPU. It works fine until I shut it down. Then I get a Black Windows screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer" I have updated the bios. Anyway to fix this so I don't have to manually press the button to power it off at that point?

When I try to turn on the computer I get a black screen that appears stating that Windows did not shut down properly and how would I like to restart the computer. There are then five options available to chose from (3 Safe Modes options, last known configuration, and normally). I have attempted all five with no good outcome.
I do get the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"....
I push the power button on the modem and it's fine... right after the screen does the Windows XP with the loading bar at the bottom screen it turns black and I even left it on for like 10 minutes and it still wont work. View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

Every time when I turn off my computer, the machine shows "Now is safe to turn or your computer" message. I know there is a way to disable this but just don't know how. I do some search on this website, and found out we can have this fix by enabling the Advanced Power Management Support at Control Panel. However, my computer doesn't have the APM option under the Power Option. I have W2K install on this machine. I did fix this problem before by editing the registry but just forget how to do it.

After doing the XP loading screen for normal time, it loads a black screen with the mouse, and nothing else. I've waited over fifteen minutes and it does nothing. After a few clicks, the error speaker beeps and the mouse freezes. Tried loading in safe mode, and it gives a black screen with all the safe mode text around the screen. Anyone had any experience with this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI booted up my computer 3 days ago and logged in under my user name, and there were no desktop icons or taskbar, so I restarted my computer and tried every user, still nothing. I went to msconfig to restore it to a earlier point, and when it restarted I went to my user name, and still nothing so I went to msconfig again and booted it up in safe mode, when it restarted, right before the user names screen came up, a black screen with "SAFE MODE" in all four corners pops up for about 3 or 4 seconds, then the user name screen comes up with the ADMIN and the rest of the user names, it doesn't matter what name I log in as it always goes to the same black Safe Mode screen as before but it will freeze there forever. So I had to manually shut it down. When it restarted I hit F8 to get it out of safe mode and chose restart computer normally, then when it restarts the same exact thing thing happens. I've tried every option at the F8 selection screen. So I put in a cd with Mepis Linux on it that my cousin gave me, but I didn't install it I have been running it off the disk. And I have no clue what to do next.

While i have been playing a game my screen would freeze and black out, or just suddently black out.so i would have to shut it off through the back switch. this was happening for about a week. This problem happened again last night only this time it wont let me boot back into windows. it will boot up to the windows logo loading screen and restart, after this restart it will tell me windows did not boot properly and ask to continue with safe mode with networking, and console.(still rebooted with all choices) and windows normaly (rebooted) and windows with last safest configuration (still rebooted). occasionaly it will get to scandisk, after the scandisk it will lock up or reboot, if it gets passed scandisk without rebooting it gives me a blue screen
View 1 Replies View Relatedi had a computer which had a pretty bad visus on it. i think i got the virus out but now it wont start.I tried to do a repair of windows with what i thought was the disc for the pc, turns out it was a different xp version than the one on the pc.
So how i have the original corrupted windows, and the repair version of xp on the machine. Both of which will not even run.Its really important that i get the data of the pc, that was the whole point of what i am doing. the computer starts, then said it didnt load, i choose how i want to start the pc, safe mode...etc and then it freezes.Sometimes it just goes straight to a black screen, and i can no longer get it to boot from the windows disc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.
Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.
Powers on to the normal blue screen. Black screen comes up that says We apologize for the inconvience...etc. etc. windows did not shut down normally and gives the option for last know good configeration, start windows normally, safe mode, etc. Tried them all and it just goes back to the normal blue screen and back to We apologize for the inconvience. F10 system recovery does the same thing.I would like to be able to fix this and not lose any of the information I have on my hard drive. I did a total back-up about 7 months ago (13 DVDs worth) and do have some backup through Norton 360
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy main pc is stuck in a boot cycle giving me the black screen with options to start in safe mode etc etc and when selecting one of those options it reboots to the same point. When I press return the system tries to start it attempts it, clicks then goes back to boot cycle. The Windows XP system disk won't cut in like it should so I cannot gain control of the pc.
System is a Dell, 2years old and has had various viruses despite having the usual protection. I am currently using my old trusty Advent Pentium 3 for this message (which has never had the same degree of virus prob's curiously). After the first virus Dell talked me through using Ghost - brilliant. Within a couple of days it was hit again and usinng Spybot got rid of the virus but PC kept displaying the message rundll.dll file damaged. So I used XP Recovery seemingly with no problem only to find it won't reboot.

View 8 Replies View RelatedOK, several months ago I tried to upgrade my video drivers for an ATI Radeon board and after that every time windows booted, my screen would go black before windows started. The monitor saw a video signal but that was about it. If I put my old video card back in it would work fine. So I have been dealing with this for a couple of months and tonight I tried to tackle it again. I removed my old drivers, the old card drivers, everything I could think of. It still didn't work. So I stuck my old card back in and tried a few more things back and forth, and then I got the blue screen of death.

We all work for a local PC repair shop and have had at least 10 pc's and laptops come in during the last two days with all the same issue. Customers have installed some windows update, rebooted and the systems will only display a black screen with a cursor. Some will get into windows if you leave them sitting after an hour or so, but no services are running, cannot run anything on the system (obviously without services running). Have tried repair installs, checkdisk's, and still no luck. Have also scanned HDD's on different systems with numerous anti- virus -spyware programs. nothing found.
Any one have any idea's?We literally had 6 or 7 day rushes for the issues from major VIP people that own local businesses, and our only fix has been to reload windows. Any insight would be great. And please understand that we are all Microsoft certified and have tried all of your run of the mill fixes for windows.
my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.
Next time, generally it would work perfect.So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

My computer wont turn off 1st time. The 1st time i press the 'turn off' button, the screen flashs, as if its getting ready to turn off, but then nothing happens. When i repeat the procedure again, it does turn off.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dell dimension 8250 3 years old I just had a nvidia gforce 128 mb graphics card put in to replace a burned out 64 bit card,now I just noticed the next day that when I right click anywhere on the desktop screen except on a folder or program-the cursor become an hourglass and it freezes pemanantly I cant even turn the comp off to shut it down I have to use the on off button.Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

It'll BSOD and then when he goes to boot it back up, it'll load the Bios screen and turn itself back off, with no warning. After I reset/reboot it comes on and runs ok the rest of the day.The next morning when I turn it on it's the same thing to do over.I've run all my virus programs and can't find anything.the computer power indicator never goes out. I push the switch to reset, computer comes on and runs normally the rest of day.Looks like I still have a virus/bug somewhere.
