Turn On Computer Black Screen - Windowssystem32configsystem File Missing
Feb 5, 2006
My Windows XP operating system crashed last night. When I try to turn on the computer I get a black screen that appears stating that Windows did not shut down properly and how would I like to restart the computer. There are then five options available to chose from (3 Safe Modes options, last known configuration, and normally). I have attempted all five with no good outcome.
I do get the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"....

I have a Compaq Presario 5320 US, XP Pro, 768 MB Ram 1.5 GHz CPU. It works fine until I shut it down. Then I get a Black Windows screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer" I have updated the bios. Anyway to fix this so I don't have to manually press the button to power it off at that point?

I am having an issue with my computer obviously. I have a VPR Matrix desktop FT6100 computer. It has windows xp as its operating system. We had a huge storm here last Friday causing a total loss of power. Now, when I turn on the computer I am getting the following error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM then it says please put in restore cd and press "r" for the repair menu. I put in my restore cd and the options were to just do the windows xp files, No Format or Quick Format. The first option the computer said was least destructive so I tried that route and brings me back to the same black screen w/ the same error msg. I went to microsoft.com to print off the instructions for the error msg and I can't even get to where the instructions are talking about. I don't want to lose all my files so I haven't touched the other 2 options on the restore cd. How can I fix this with my system?

I have an old computer with an Intel Celeron 467 MHz processor, 128 ram and I'm running Windows XP SP2. Earlier this week I came to turn on my computer, and could not log on to Windows. "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt Windowssystem32configsystem." I reinstalled XP. I couln't access the repair install. Then I thought maybe someone had gotten into my computer and I downloaded Zone Alarm...Big mistake. Since then my computer freezes, programs jam, I keep losing my internet connection,(DSL) and I get "cannot find server" messages. Its also slower as molasses in winter. A little better since the removal. Obviously Zone Alarm was removed and i went back to Windows firewall. I also use Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster and I use Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities.

I tried all of them and nothing worked. So i got a boot cd off the internet and tried using that but did not know what i was doing or how to use it. I tried running a couple things but nothing worked i probably just made it worse. So now when i try load windows a NTLDR is missing error comes up. Has anyone seen this before? I had problems right out of the gate...after typing out the first command line: tmpsystem.bak and hitting enter, I got the message that said could not find file...so I tried again and was extra diligent with my typing, but the same disappointing message came up.I decided to use some imagination and initiative and, started with the last command line first: tmpdefault.bak This worked for this line and then the next one too: tmpsecurity.bak and so on. When I got back to the tmpsystem.bak line, it even worked for that one too.
Then I moved on to the delete commands and that worked out OK...as far as I could tell? But, when I got to the repair lines and, in particular, the: repairsystem C:windowssystem32configsystem I then got the same message saying that the file could not be found...back to square one. Then I went back to the start...typing out the copy lines, and I got the same message for the system line again. So, I started from the default line again and it worked--I was asked if I wanted to re-write the first file copied and I chose Y (yes) then the same brick wall when I got to the system line.

I've just turned my notebook on this morning and a screen came up "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM" It then tells me that I can fix the problem using the original Setup CD-ROM... The problem is, in the last couple of years that I've had it we've moved twice and are about to move again and I can't find it anywhere! And, I need the computer for work. Is there any way I can do this without the CD?

My computer has been running really slow lately, and whenever I turn it on there are two error pop ups saying that some files are missing.I also downloaded Registry Booster, because I heard it's pretty good, although the free version doesn't do much, and it says I have 994 registry problems.

PC apparently crashed while I was gone. Black screen, says need to reload missing or corrupt hal.dll Cannot reboot into safe mode, no last known good point to return to. This is the only screen I can get, other than setup for bios - which can still see the hard drive and installed peripherals. Don't have a floppy drive,
although I'll be getting one soon, in order to try a boot to that.

This machiene has Fedora core 6 currently loaded on the ATA133 150 gb segate drive with an AMD 3200+ 2.2ghz and 1.25 gig of ram along side a Geforce 5900xt all riding on the a7n8x nforce 2 chipset. This is a kick butt system however Vista does not support my hardware and linux is not using my swap file correctly.I put in the legal copy of windows xp sp2 and boot my pc asks me to press any key to boot from cd and upon completion the screen reads Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration. then the screen is black jack and there aint no going back I've left it up for hours. Tried booting using the BARTS ultimate boot cd, same thing. Tried a floppy boot disk and I get a similar issue. Even when trying to boot from a USB I have trouble. But Fedora core still comes up fine and I can boot into that setup.

This is what it shows me when I turn on the computer and windows tried to load: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0X00000024 and a bunch of other numbers and letters..............

my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.
Next time, generally it would work perfect. So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

was getting a blue screen 07A was told by computer techs without looking it was either my hard drive or my operating system. Checked my hard drive several different ways and no problems. So I went to do a Windows XP repair instead of complete reinstall as they are a pain. After a long time it came back that couldn't do this because SPCMDCOM>SYS file was missing and couldn't repair from recovery console without it. My hard drive was replaced by Dell in July of 05 I think. What can I do without going to extremes? Secondly can I install my cd/dvd rom on my other Dell PC with discs I already have? I am very aggravated. I want to try to save at least 1 computer. On the 1st PC about 2 months ago I had my 17 inch flat panel go out it starts but then go black, I am using the 2nd computers screen!
