I run Microsoft Windows home service pack 2Also, to complicate things, My computer is lacking a disk drive, so i only have access to USB ports.
I had problems right out of the gate...after typing out the first command line: tmpsystem.bak and hitting enter, I got the message that said could not find file...so I tried again and was extra diligent with my typing, but the same disappointing message came up.I decided to use some imagination and initiative and, started with the last command line first: tmpdefault.bak This worked for this line and then the next one too: tmpsecurity.bak and so on. When I got back to the tmpsystem.bak line, it even worked for that one too.
Then I moved on to the delete commands and that worked out OK...as far as I could tell?But, when I got to the repair lines and, in particular, the: repairsystem C:windowssystem32configsystem I then got the same message saying that the file could not be found...back to square one.Then I went back to the start...typing out the copy lines, and I got the same message for the system line again. So, I started from the default line again and it worked--I was asked if I wanted to re-write the first file copied and I chose Y (yes) then the same brick wall when I got to the system line.
I have xp and when i start my cmputer i get this Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windowssystem32configsystem,I don't seam to be able to enter safe mode with f8 pressed.

The problem is, in the last couple of years that I've had it we've moved twice and are about to move again and I can't find it anywhere! And, I need the computer for work. Is there any way I can do this without the CD?

We had a huge storm here last Friday causing a total loss of power. Now, when I turn on the computer I am getting the following error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM then it says please put in restore cd and press "r" for the repair menu. I put in my restore cd and the options were to just do the windows xp files, No Format or Quick Format. The first option the computer said was least destructive so I tried that route and brings me back to the same black screen w/ the same error msg. I went to microsoft.com to print off the instructions for the error msg and I can't even get to where the instructions are talking about. I don't want to lose all my files so I haven't touched the other 2 options on the restore cd. How can I fix this with my system?

I have an old computer with an Intel Celeron 467 MHz processor, 128 ram and I'm running Windows XP SP2. Earlier this week I came to turn on my computer, and could not log on to Windows. "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt Windowssystem32configsystem." I reinstalled XP. I couln't access the repair install. Then I thought maybe someone had gotten into my computer and I downloaded Zone Alarm...Big mistake. Since then my computer freezes, programs jam, I keep losing my internet connection,(DSL) and I get "cannot find server" messages. Its also slower as molasses in winter. A little better since the removal. Obviously Zone Alarm was removed and i went back to Windows firewall. I also use Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster and I use Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities.

When I try to turn on the computer I get a black screen that appears stating that Windows did not shut down properly and how would I like to restart the computer. Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a 64-bit processor, so I decided to try out the 64-bit version of Windows. I backed up everything on C: and moved it to G:. Then I deleted the C: partition and installed Windows XP 64-bit version on that partition. Then I decided that I really didn't like it, so I ran the Windows Setup disk and deleted the C: partition, created it again, and voila! No more XP 64. Then I tried to boot back into my original version of XP Pro and it gave me the "NTLDR is missing" error. Reloaded XP 64 on the C: partition, copied NTLDR from the XP cd over to my D: drive, deleted the C: partition, and just left it alone this time. Now I get an error with something along the lines of "HARD DISK ERROR...Restart Computer".
View 1 Replies View RelatedCorrect me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that hard drive letters were assigned each time the machine booted up & only c & d were reserved for the operating system & CD/DVD drive & if the number of drives altered from one boot up to the next these letters could change. The reason hat I ask is that I changed an internal drive which had several partitions on it only to find that this drive isn't recognized, but even though it isn't recognized by My Computer or disk management the other partition are labeled as if this were listed.I now don't have a an 'e' & 'g' drive listed. But I do have a 'J' & 'k' listed. Where is my other drive 'e' & 'g' & how do I get to use the data on them.

On my pc, I had one drive with Windows 98 on it, and one drive with Windows XP on it
Windows 98 was on drive C: XP was on D: They were set up so I could choose which one to boot to at start up I wanted to get rid of the 98 entirely, so I edited the boot ini, just removing the entry for windows 98 after restarting the computer, everything was fine....going directly to XP so I wanted to format the 98 drive so I could use it as additional storage, which I did using norton partition magic, I then shut down my computer......turned it back on.....and I get an error saying: NTLDR is missing.
I know it was here at my last login, but Disk Cleanup is no longer listed in Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools, and the shortcut that I had placed on my Desktop is gone as well. This is the second PC on my in-home network, running XP Home edition, that this has happened to within the last 9 months - I have Norton Internet Security (all current and up to date) on all three boxes - anybody know what 's going on?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout ten days ago my Acer Aspire E360 (AMD 64 X2 3800, 2gb - Win Media Center 2005) started giving BSOD errors at startup. It would to into safe mode but no trouble shooting worked. Finally it wouldn't boot at all giving me the: NTLDR missing error. I downloaded the ISO that 'fixes' this error and it didn't work, saying that hal.dll was missing. My recovery disks - 6 in all - are available but when I booted from them they said that it would erase the entire C drive. In the meantime I downloaded ISOs to test the disk and the memory. Disk was fine, but there was one very bad memory stick, which I've replaced.
I don't want to lose the C: data. I did do an Acronis 10 backup just before it went totally down, but I'm not sure that the bad memory stick didn't corrupt data that's now backed up. A friend gave me a copy of a WinXP Pro (without serial number) to see if I could use the repair function. However, he only copied the files and did not clone the disk so it's not bootable. Using another computer I used Nero (Caldera DOS) to make a bootable disk. Unfortunately when I tried to boot up with it I got a warning: "EMM386 - address line A20 already enabled." and then it froze.
When left for a while (about half an hour), I come back to it and see that the screen is black with something about a system disk error. I experienced this before I had to re-install windows a few weeks back.The first time, I pressed enter, and the system started up fine. The second time, the secondary loading screen (that's what I call it...it's like little white rectangles at the bottom of a black screen...you know the ne, right?). Well yeah that goes really really slow. When it get's a few inches in, it stops and tells me 'system32driverstfs.sys is missing or corrupt'.

Upon boot up the error "NTLDR is Missing" I am able to access the setup menu but not Bios. I have the Acer Recovery disc but recieve an error in the 2nd disk "Cannot find preload.tag for setbootini" Is there a way to fix this if you don't have the windows xp disk? WindowsXP came loaded on the system. I am unable to access anything past the Acer logo screen. I am posting this from another computer.

I have 9 folders and a few tiny files on C: and very few programs installed.If I add the sizes of 9 folders (Windows-3.09 GB Program files-1GB) I only get about 5GB.What or where might the other 4 GB be?
