I had problems right out of the gate...after typing out the first command line: tmpsystem.bak and hitting enter, I got the message that said could not find file...so I tried again and was extra diligent with my typing, but the same disappointing message came up.I decided to use some imagination and initiative and, started with the last command line first: tmpdefault.bak This worked for this line and then the next one too: tmpsecurity.bak and so on. When I got back to the tmpsystem.bak line, it even worked for that one too.
Then I moved on to the delete commands and that worked out OK...as far as I could tell? But, when I got to the repair lines and, in particular, the: repairsystem C:windowssystem32configsystem I then got the same message saying that the file could not be found...back to square one. Then I went back to the start...typing out the copy lines, and I got the same message for the system line again. So, I started from the default line again and it worked--I was asked if I wanted to re-write the first file copied and I chose Y (yes) then the same brick wall when I got to the system line.

I've just turned my notebook on this morning and a screen came up "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM" It then tells me that I can fix the problem using the original Setup CD-ROM... The problem is, in the last couple of years that I've had it we've moved twice and are about to move again and I can't find it anywhere! And, I need the computer for work. Is there any way I can do this without the CD?

I am having an issue with my computer obviously. I have a VPR Matrix desktop FT6100 computer. It has windows xp as its operating system. We had a huge storm here last Friday causing a total loss of power. Now, when I turn on the computer I am getting the following error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM then it says please put in restore cd and press "r" for the repair menu. I put in my restore cd and the options were to just do the windows xp files, No Format or Quick Format. The first option the computer said was least destructive so I tried that route and brings me back to the same black screen w/ the same error msg. I went to microsoft.com to print off the instructions for the error msg and I can't even get to where the instructions are talking about. I don't want to lose all my files so I haven't touched the other 2 options on the restore cd. How can I fix this with my system?

I have an old computer with an Intel Celeron 467 MHz processor, 128 ram and I'm running Windows XP SP2. Earlier this week I came to turn on my computer, and could not log on to Windows. "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt Windowssystem32configsystem." I reinstalled XP. I couln't access the repair install. Then I thought maybe someone had gotten into my computer and I downloaded Zone Alarm...Big mistake. Since then my computer freezes, programs jam, I keep losing my internet connection,(DSL) and I get "cannot find server" messages. Its also slower as molasses in winter. A little better since the removal. Obviously Zone Alarm was removed and i went back to Windows firewall. I also use Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster and I use Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

Well, I woke up this morning to turn on my computer, and I got an error like this. "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem. You can try repairing by using the original windows xp setup cd, press r on the first screen." Well, after scrounging for the xp cd, I put it in and booted from the cd, tried to do a repair install, but the repair option was not available. I could only install another copy of xp (onto the current copy) which I didn't want to do if it means that all my data is lost (I really don't want to lose them again!).I exited and googled up on why repair was not an option (I'm using my laptop btw), and some random dude told another guy with a similar problem to do chkdsk and bootcfg in recovery console. I went into recovery console and kind of played around with bootcfg, and I used the /rebuild function thinking it was repair, and then it asked me to type something and I was confused, so i entered "n" (for no). Well, basically now when I restart I have the option of booting up "Xp Home Edition" or "n", both of which lead to the missing file message, but how did I make two windows? And can I get rid of this "n" windows I made?

I've had with it, nor the first time this EXACT thing has happened before. my boot files get corrupt. First I was told that boot.dll or some such file is missing. I repaired that through the Windows XP CD Repair option, then ran a chkdsk /r. Next bootup I was told another .dll - something like hal.dll - is missing or corrupt, and when I fix that, I was told my system registry is corrupt. The following file is missing or corrupt: C:WINDOWSSystem32System.exe, after booting from the Windows XP CD, hit ENTER for setup and then R to repair existing installation. if I try to start WinXP normally a blue screen flashes, some sentences spring up and before I can begin to read them, the PC reboots.

XP PRO SP2- Recieve the following message upon unsuccessful boot attempt. "WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: <WINDOWS ROOT> SYSTEM32HAL.DLL (not yelling ) I have tried to boot from my xp pro cd to utilize the recover utility however the computer will not boot from the cd. I able to use a dos boot disk however my keyboard is USB and I cannot find USB drivers to work under dos, so I was unable to do anything at that point. It was my hope that I could work through dos to edit the boot.ini file.
I do not want to reinstall windows. If I have to I will place the hard drive in another computer as a slave and work on it that way but I'd rather not. The only other tower type computer I have other then laptops is running xp home SP2.

I was playing Medieval II: Total War and the computer crashes. Then when I try to boot it up I get Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM. I've checked BIOS for the boot procedure, and everything seems to be in order. I then go through the regular procedure of putting in the CD to run the repair. I boot from the CD, it loads up fine... but there are no partitions and no option to enter the recovery console (which I've read so many wonderful things about).
So now I'm sort of stuck. There's no options other than install and delete the selected (none) partition. If I hit delete (b/c in anger sometimes I'm an idiot) it tells me it's a system partition and there could be VALUABLE system information like AN OS (I'm fuming at this point). NO... I did not delete it. If I hit install, I get a bunch of bogus about how "Setup cannot install to the selected partition.

I restarted my computer after installing an update to my firewall program. I get the "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll" I tried to do system restore first (F10) and it tried to start windows to start the system restore program I suppose and so of course the same error message came up. After retrying a few times, I tried the other option in system recovery (f10) and it said user data would be preserved but I may need to reinstall programs, so I thought that'd be fine. I let it do it's thing and came back later when it was done and it looked like the first time I started my computer ever where it has that cheesy music and asks you to name your computer, etc. So I'm finally in Windows again (XP Media Edition 2002 SP2) and the first thing I check is my documents folder and all my documents are gone! I checked the properties of the C: drive and it shows that I've used 224GB space, but I can't find my files anywhere. I've looked in all profiles in documents and settings. It seems like the files should be somewhere since the hard drive shows that I have that used space.
