I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running windows xp home edition with sp2. To turn off my pc,i usually click on start in the taskbar, then the options to stand-by,turn off or restart appear,I then click on turn off,and the pc does the rest,it turns the pc off and the monitor. Now when i go through the process of turning it off, i do everything as described above, but instead of shutting off,it just acts as if i did nothing,i am left staring at the desktop and can just continue to use it as normal. So i have come to the conclusion that some sort of virus or something (i am doing a virus sweep as i am writting) has turned off the auto shutdown function,What i'd really love to know is can anyone tell me how i can turn this feature back on,i also forgot to add, that u cannot log off either, the same thing happens.

When I try to turn on the computer I get a black screen that appears stating that Windows did not shut down properly and how would I like to restart the computer. There are then five options available to chose from (3 Safe Modes options, last known configuration, and normally). I have attempted all five with no good outcome.
I do get the following message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"....
I have been having a hellish time with our computer. When I start it it gives me the option of opening in safemode etc but regardless of my choice a blue screen comes on. It says. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If thi is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x867670F0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
I can't do anything else. I hit the F8 key when it was starting up but I didn't know what to do after that.
I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got this used pc with 2000 pro in it. I was just getting used to Windows 98SE and didn't like the 2kP, so I installed my 98SE too. Besides having to track down the graphics program and audio driver, all went smoothly. Since the, I've been under the impression that I was running 98SE OS...until I added a cd/rw that keeps insisting that I must be the administrator to burn anything for Nemo.
So today, I naively went into the start-up Bios thinking I was going to just do a C:
einstall of Windows 98SE and get rid of all that unwanted system. Ha Ha.
Ok...So, ideally I'd like to get this 2000 software out of here and make it completely 98SE...or maybe get in there and become the administrator. I do seem to have a 2000 Pro Installation CD and somewhere I have 3 (I think) HP recovery disks.
When I tried to do the C:Win98 re-install, needless to say, all this did was go on ahead and boot-up from the hard disk (I assume). I couldn't get the "pick an option" boot-up screen at all.
I'm sick to death of this pc's lack of functionality so I want to upgrade it. I want to (if possible): Add more RAM Add a second HDD (120-160GB) Install XP Home Is there any way, short of opening the case, I can check what needs to be checked eg. if there's a free memory slot, what kind of memory to use, what kind of HDD will work etc. Also, where is the best place to buy? Do I want to pick up an OEM or upgrade XP? Are the components region specific?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a older Imb laptop modle T23 computer and when I shut it down rather then using standby it takes several times trying to get it to come back on. I press the little round on/off button and the (z) button lights up and I hear the fan turn on and all of a sudden a series of beeps, and the screen won't turn on. The beeping is like 8 beeps, then stops but still nothing come up on the screen. Completely black! So i turn off the computer again, and turn on same thing. I continue doing this like 30+ times sometimes more sometimes less, then finally the beeps dont start and the screen is working. So needless to say its still working in the mean time, but its just such a pain if I shut it down. . For now I am just going to continue using standby but when I have updates sometimes i need to shut down.

Whenever I go to turn it off it doesn't respond, so you have to keep going to start-turn off-turn off over and over again. Either that happens or when I try to turn it off I get the 'End Now' program box coming up with something about ending ccAp, the odd thing is that yesterday it shut down without a problem, which is the first time in a few days that it's done that, and today it's gone funny again! Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong at all?
