Im trying to find out how to reboot my computer.I currently had windows XP Pro and I deleted something I needed by accident and then restarted. That's when it stopped working all it does is bring up the background pic and no icons or start bar. I have a win Xp pro disc but it doesn't do anything it doesn't pick it up for nothing so i was wondering how to make it pick it up manually ?
I just formatted my computer last night and after I reinstalled XP Pro it started showing 2 same OS's to pick from when I start up the computer. I went back into the XP setup and looked for any extra partitions but there is only one so why is this extra XP showing up
I got this used pc with 2000 pro in it. I was just getting used to Windows 98SE and didn't like the 2kP, so I installed my 98SE too. Besides having to track down the graphics program and audio driver, all went smoothly. Since the, I've been under the impression that I was running 98SE OS...until I added a cd/rw that keeps insisting that I must be the administrator to burn anything for Nemo. So today, I naively went into the start-up Bios thinking I was going to just do a C: einstall of Windows 98SE and get rid of all that unwanted system. Ha Ha. Ok...So, ideally I'd like to get this 2000 software out of here and make it completely 98SE...or maybe get in there and become the administrator. I do seem to have a 2000 Pro Installation CD and somewhere I have 3 (I think) HP recovery disks. When I tried to do the C:Win98 re-install, needless to say, all this did was go on ahead and boot-up from the hard disk (I assume). I couldn't get the "pick an option" boot-up screen at all.
I'm sick to death of this pc's lack of functionality so I want to upgrade it. I want to (if possible): Add more RAM Add a second HDD (120-160GB) Install XP Home Is there any way, short of opening the case, I can check what needs to be checked eg. if there's a free memory slot, what kind of memory to use, what kind of HDD will work etc. Also, where is the best place to buy? Do I want to pick up an OEM or upgrade XP? Are the components region specific?
I recently installed VPN client on my windows XP sp3 pc, and I started to experience network issues. My can no longer pick up any wireless signals. I see no wireless network available. My wire network does not appear to be working either. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem,

Am running XP with sp2 . Never come across this problem till now. When I get onto the Microsoft website and try to add updates manualy, the site checks out my PC system to see what os system im running (i presume), then I get 2 options, 1 to install custom updates and 1 for download priority. If I click on either I get a bar with moving green dots in telling me itschecking for latest updates on my computer. It does not stop! And when I press the Back link or close it just about freezes my whole pc, even Ctrl, Alt & delete does not work
I am running XP Pro, and whenever Day Light Savings time comes around I have to change the time manually. I DO have "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" checked. Where is the problem at
I use Windows XPpro with HD partitioned so that D drive holds all applications. Unfortunately some applications install by default to C drive 'My Programs' and there is no option to change the destination manually. Does anyone know a way around this?
I have a Dell XPS computer with Windows XP SP3. Just yesterday it started acting up by when I went to shut it down (and it does this every time now) it says "ending program "sprtcmd.exe" , then unable to end program, so I have to end manually EVERY DARN TIME. This just started with shut down last nite. I did a system restore and that fixed it, BUT then my McCaffee Antivirus program said it can not load due to an error, basically the antivirus program got all screwed up, so I UN-DID the restore. Now the antivirus works well but the stupid "sprtcmd.exe" problem is back! So I did that about 5 times picking different System Restore points each time and for some reason the McCafee screws up, so I had to undo each one.
Is there a way to manually download all the updates that have been installed and save them for later? lets say Because I plan to use WINXP HOME SP2 for a long LONG time, and want to make sure they are available to me.OR I have a computer not hooked to the internet but still ofcourse want all the updates.
I have a game that I play sometimes. I downloaded it from a very reliable site as I have 3 or 4 other games from the same site that have always worked fine. On this particular game, every once and a while it will freeze up on me and the only way to get out is to manually turn off my pc and then turn it back on again. When I turn it back on my pc does some kind of a scan and tells me that the NTFS volume is dirty. I have never seen this term used before. I am running a Dell with Windows XP sp2. What is a NTFS volume? What does this mean and what do I need to do? I have Avast antivirus and Armor 2 Net firewall and 2 different antispyware programs running.
I installed windows defender about 6 months ago and recently it stopped running.I keep getting an alert message ; APPLICATION FAILED TO INITIALISEOX800106BA A PROBLEM HAS FORCED IT TO STOPIt instructs to restart computer or search help and support to start manuallyI can not find how to manually restart it
Several items I've tried to update give me an error message " Can not update can not connect to server ". I don't know what's going on. There's no firewall blockage problem, my Anti virus is affected, my Gmail account won't check mail or new open mail. Not sure who else is affected, have been getting Microsoft downloads as recent as this morning.
I have two proggrams in the Add/Remove Program list that will not 'un-install'. I've removed them manually but they still show in the list. any way of altering the settings [ registry ?] so these don't show in future ?
Im having problem with window xp sign up with the password. I think I have found a virus and the system would not let me turn off my computer. So I manually turned it off and when trying to log back on it has now changed my password or it wont let me in.
Without using a third party program, does the XP system itself offer a quick way to see where my start up originate from, since msconfig startups only gives most of the line but not all, plus I cannot manually copy those lines to the run box to see where they go. Not having as in my case and AV, if I disable all the startups, reboot and the some startups are still there, can I interpreted those startups as malware then?
With the date of Daylights saving time changing will this affect how the computer clocks spring foward to daylight savings time? Will I need to do it manually or will it be automatic, like in the past?
Tech guy has altered something on her XP OS to append a .pdf extension to any file she downloads from the net. I understand that it was for her own protection as she can't execute any viruses, but it needs to be disabled to allow her to upgrade her flash player. I know the work around is to download the standalone file and manually remove the .pdf but would prefer to nip the problem in the bud.
I downloaded a virus when I downloaded skype off of a third party website. Now I've got an .exe named skypeout on my desktop that doesn't want to move. Windows XP won't let me delete it because it is in use by another program. I could manually delete it off of my hard drive? I can't move it anywhere or delete it, it is alo probably logging keys too.
I'm helping to create a website for my boss. I am copy/pasting descriptions of products, but I need to replace all the bullet points manually with <il>. It's super time consuming and I'd like to find a quicker way to complete this project. Weekends are for comic book reading and video game playing! Poop on working weekends! Does anyone here know how I can do a "Find and Replace"?
I cant open exe files on my computer. It comes up with the notice that It cant find a program for it on my computer and it I want to manually search for a program or use a web service to find an appropriate program. The web service button dont work.
I recently baught a used machine that came with a working clean cut legal copy of Windows XP. Needless to say I was thrilled, but I machine to use as a Linux file server, but this Windows XP installation was too valuable for me to simply discard. I took out the hard drive and placed it another computer. The computer boots windows XP, then 2 seconds later it blue screens and reboots (much too quickly for me to read the error message)
I'm thinking here, the obvious problem is that I took a Windows XP installation and changed all the hardware on it and it didn't have the drivers for it. I attempted to run the recovery console from a Windows XP installation disc and it asked me for the administrator password. The drivers are on the XP disc somewhere, I would like to know how to install them manually (using a Linux boot disc to move files from the XP installation disc to the hard drive)
I downloaded a bunch of spyware by mistake this morning from a link my friend gave to me, he was unaware as well. I was able to get rid of the majority of it, but there are a few things in my registry i am unable to delete, i used spy bot to get rid of most of the spy ware but for some reason it is not detecting the rest, also ad aware detects it but is unable to remove it since it is running in the background, i am unable to find the processs from task manager and end it so i cant delete it from the registry manually. What it is doing is bascially spamming pop ups on my pc every so often, here are the suspected names of the infections : mpise.dll , h22o0cf3ef2.dll , h62o0gf3e62.dll.
The problem is that each time I turn the pc on, if I want to access the internet, I must right click on My Computer, then Manage and then Service and Applications and then Double Click DHCP Client. It is set for Autostart but something is wrong because I have to manually start it up. I did a quick check on other items that had no status and they seem to be in this file: 'System32svchost.exe -k netscvs'. The tech guy from my ISP told me that it could be a problem with my XP disc? I can't see how. When my friend installed this hardware he also installed an extra hard drive, around 6 gig for things I might want on a backup incase something happens to my main hard drive. He formatted both hard drives and put Windows 98 on the main drive, not aware that you could do a clean install with XP.Now when my computer starts up I have to choose either Windows XP Home or Windows if I choose Windows nothing happens. Just a blinking cursor. My main concern right now is that I have to manuallly start up the DHCP Client if I want to go online.I went into the BIOS looking for answers.
