Tech guy has altered something on her XP OS to append a .pdf extension to any file she downloads from the net. I understand that it was for her own protection as she can't execute any viruses, but it needs to be disabled to allow her to upgrade her flash player. I know the work around is to download the standalone file and manually remove the .pdf but would prefer to nip the problem in the bud.

At some point in time I checked the box that says "Always perform this action ... yada/yada" (don't remember the exact words. It said I can change this setting any time by doing ?(don't remember). This file I believe is of some 2.5GB and my download speed is approx. 2mb. So when trying to download this file, it indicates that will take approx. 25hrs to complete.Is there anyway of capturing what's downloaded in a temp file and then pick up again to continue the download in number of sessions till completion of the full download. At present if I shut the page or turn PC off, it starts the download again from scratch when restarting.

i am a beginner and have tried to sort this out by searching the net for a cure - but every 'solution' seems to be a ropy sales gambit!When I try to download, instead of a dialog box choosing between 'Run' and 'Save', it's one offering me only 'Find' and 'Save'.Clicking 'Find' brings up the Windows File Association page stating:-"MIME Type: application/x-msdownload Description: UnKnownWindows does not recognize this MIME type." (119 files) I did not save the file at download but just ran the zip file and the extracted files opened in desktop. I deleted the files from my desktop and recycle bin. Every time I start/reboot, these 119 files continue to open, cluttering my desktop. I need the formula/pathway to follow to get to the destination in regedit.exe hkey_current_user start up folder with instructions on how to delete these extracted files so they will stop opening to my desktop at start.

I read somewhere that you have to disable system file protection in order to replace dll files that are in use all the time. But it's complicated, at least for me. The file's folder and some of the music appears to be in the folder I designated for the downloads. When i try to delete it, Win 2K Pro refuses to recognize it. It tells me the file doesn't exist! Same thing if I try to rename the file. A search will not find it either. Anybody have an idea how I can get rid of this thing? It's not causing me any problems, but it's driving me nutz! I don't want to resort to a format!
