I am working on a friends laptop, a Dell Inspiron 9200 running Windows XP Pro with SP3. I have it working well now except the USB ports do not work.The laptop was in pretty bad shape when I started. I remove Norton Antivirus (subscription expired 3 years ago), removed a few trojans and viruses using Malwarebytes and Combofix, and installed AVG Free. I also cleaned up the temp files, compacted the registry using NTRegOpt, and defragmented the drive.I have tried uninstalling the USB controllers and let Windows reinstall them, verified working status in Device manager, and disabled USB device power management. I also plugged in a USB mouse and verified the ports are supplying power.

Norton Told Infected Virus - Can't Remove

Norton has just told me that my computer has been infected with the trojan.nebuler virus. I have read the various deletion instructions for this specific virus, but all seem to require the recovery console on the XP CD. Seeing as my computer was bought from dell they haven't supplied me with one. Is there anything else I can do. I don't really want to re-install my OS etc...

Previously downloaded a freeware Download Manager software called Fresh Download by www.freshdevices.com Wasn't satisfied with performance so I uninstalled it. This error message comes up whenever I go to download anything in FIREFOX ONLY: I have gone through and removed all traces in my registry to no avail. The vendor does not offer tech support.I have to use IE for all downloads and it is a pain.

Tech guy has altered something on her XP OS to append a .pdf extension to any file she downloads from the net. I understand that it was for her own protection as she can't execute any viruses, but it needs to be disabled to allow her to upgrade her flash player. I know the work around is to download the standalone file and manually remove the .pdf but would prefer to nip the problem in the bud.

The last windows update that I can see is KB 905474 and was downloaded by my automatic updates.I can see it when going to windows updates/view history. Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

I couldn't remove it on a conventional way, using the add/remove tool, so I removed it from my windows startup list, and then physically removed the folder from my HDD, and then used PC Tools Registry Mechanic thinking that it would do the trick,but it didn't. I recently installed Mcafee. I defraged my computer and restarted it. When it loaded up I noticed that everything is taking 2x as long to load and it is taking long time to even get the start button list up. I was able to get into the add/remove program list but nothing was there. I have tried previously to uninstall my HP Officejet G85 printer from HP Pavilion a1130n running XP Media. There is no Change/Remove button in Add/Remove Programs but the program is there, 150 MB, and the file suggested on the HP website for uninstalling older printers from XP produces a message that it's "unsupported" can't remember exact verbiage, been a while since last tried. Even reinstalled in the hopes that a message would come up to the effect "this program is already installed, do you want install to remove it prior to completing this install," but it just installs the printer again with a number after it ... I'm up to "hp officejet g series - 3."

My laptop is missing lots of programs under Add/Remove Programs that I know are installed. Furthermore, some that are listed don't have the Remove button next to it. The missing programs aren't listed in the Uninstall registry key and I'm confident there are not viruses on the machine.

I recently uninstalled Windows SP3 RC1 from my computer and reverted back to Windows SP2 through the use of Projekt (Project) Dakota. Before uninstallation though, one of my siblings had run this script to update to Windows SP3 RC2. I do not want to install the newest RC2, as I'm now waiting for a final release. I changed my Windows Update Settings to download but to not install, as it was already downloaded from yesterday. Is there anyway to remove the already downloaded but not installed update for Windows SP3 RC2, and is there anyway to remove the script (that tells the computer to download SP3 RC2?)

I was trying to remove windows messenger by going to control panel -> add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components I misread the directions for this windows XP setup box and made it so that only windows messenger had a checkmark because I thought this meant that only windows messenger would be modified removed unfortunately, this just meant windows messenger stayed the same and all the other components i had installed were removed.
