I have been trying to disable automatic downloads using the Control Panel. firstly using the "Automatic Download" icon.that produced a respite of 1 or 2 days before the little yellow shield appeared at the bottom of my screen again.then i tried using the "Administrative tools" section. this also produced a temporary lull but the yellow shield keeps reappearing
View 4 RepliesI have my computer set up to automatically detect Windows XP updates and download them. Updates install when you shut down. Recently a bunch of downloads occurred but one of them did not get installed due to a missing file (message came from the MS update system). Now, everytime I shutdown, that update attempts to install and stops with the same error that requires a manual response from me.
How do I tell Windows to stop trying to install that update. I want to maintain the auto-update feature but want to get rid of just that one that is not working. I can shut down without the install attempting (option in the shut down window) but I want to get rid of it altogether. I can't find the files or commands that trigger the update on shutdown.
This is very confusing. I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'
View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.
I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all. I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter....
I have searched around a bit to see if others have ran into this problem, but I have had no luck so far. When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Windows XP and all service packs and applications I am likely to use on it, I find it useful to disable services I am not likely to use on it to a bare minimum using MSCONFIG to stop additional CPU/MEM usage going on in the background. Here is a list of those services that I use, based on the fact that I have a cable broadband connection that is always on, and a Soundblaster Live Value Soundcard Go into Start Menu, Open RUN command, type MSCONFIG Goto SERVICES tab, select DISABLE ALL, APPLY, and check the following services to start with Windows and hit APPLY afterwards DHCP Client - AUTOMATIC Plug and Play - AUTOMATIC Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - AUTOMATIC Windows Audio - AUTOMATIC
There are also a few other services I use but not all the time, these are listed below and I would either put them on MANUAL if I use them sometimes or DISABLE them completely if I didn't use them at all Goto START MENU, PROGRAMS, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES, and modify the following by right clicking...
xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

I noticed that my AntiVirus was not up-to-date (I got the MS security warning that virus prot was not running). I tried the "Live Update" feature and it didn't work (Live update could not uncompress the list of available updates. The update list somehow got corrupted. You need to run LiveUpdate again to get a new update list. I just shrugged it off and figured I would fix it later. Could not download Norton(license for 3 home computers, ok on my vista), then tried avg, both said to install sp2.Gone to microsoft downloads and when updates haver been checked they recommend to install sp2, but all attempts have failed.

I am running CCleaner version 2.31.1153 on Windows XP Pro SP2. I have spent the day trying to download Version 2.32.1165 from both Piriform and File Hippo. I get a box saying ccsetup232.exe. I click on Save File (the other option is Cancel) and everything disappears. I get a notice that all files have finished downloading but the Downloads box is blank and there is no Installer on the desktop. There is nothing which allows me to right-click and install as Administrator. I have turned off all programs which might interfere. I have Used System Restore to take me back 3 months but it still won't download and install.I can't update WinPatrol either. (It's turned off now.) The same thing happens.

Able to play game maps which he has had downloaded on the computer previously. I can play or install games which I downloaded previously. However, all new downloads/maps seem to be corrupted either in download or install. I have tried multiple sites (for game trials) though I have a subscription to one of the big sites. The files are consistently corrupt. AVG has not picked up any virii at this point.

I have Windows XP 2000 and yeah it can be a bit slow but I admit my laptop is a piece of junk, I have never had this problem, no recent applications or unusual downloads. When ANY of the following messages appear, I close the window that pops up and it closes whatever window I was browsing the inet with. Whenever I try to download my basic stuff, like, Winamp, AIM, Firefox, anything that is a program. Ive been able to download MP3s but other then that I just get a essage along the lines of it being a corrupt download or incomplete download when i try to run it. I downloaded and installed them. THe transfer rate on downloads is 2.08 kb/sec.Downloads still time out. I am having problems with downloads timimg out. I am unable to download anything over 500 k. I have contacted Dell and my ISP, I have deleted temp files, cache, cookies, etc. I also use Spybot S & D, Ccleaner, Disk Cleanup, and Defrag. None of the above seem to help. I am so frustrated!
