Automatic Update Downloads - Due To Missing File
Feb 26, 2007
I have my computer set up to automatically detect Windows XP updates and download them. Updates install when you shut down. Recently a bunch of downloads occurred but one of them did not get installed due to a missing file (message came from the MS update system). Now, everytime I shutdown, that update attempts to install and stops with the same error that requires a manual response from me.
How do I tell Windows to stop trying to install that update. I want to maintain the auto-update feature but want to get rid of just that one that is not working. I can shut down without the install attempting (option in the shut down window) but I want to get rid of it altogether. I can't find the files or commands that trigger the update on shutdown.

I have been trying to disable automatic downloads using the Control Panel. firstly using the "Automatic Download" icon.that produced a respite of 1 or 2 days before the little yellow shield appeared at the bottom of my screen again.then i tried using the "Administrative tools" section. this also produced a temporary lull but the yellow shield keeps reappearing

I have my computer set up for automatic updates and yesterday one of them started downloading and installing repeatedly. As soon as I click on the icon and install one update, the icon reappears and tells me new updates are ready to install, but it's the same one over and over. It's the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353). How do I MAKE IT STOP?

I have a desktop PC running XP Home SP2. Yesterday, I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything (always a fun chore.) After installing my ethernet driver, I went to Windows Update and discovered that a new version was installed, version 6. It has some minor cosmetic changes, but nothing dramatic. I noticed that downloads were extremely slow. A few months ago, Microsoft announced they were going to replace Windows Update with Microsoft Update, which would incorporate updates for their operating systems AND Office products. But that apparently hasn't happened yet because I still needed to visit the Microsoft Office home page to get the various critical/security patches.

I restarted my computer after installing an update to my firewall program. I get the "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll" I tried to do system restore first (F10) and it tried to start windows to start the system restore program I suppose and so of course the same error message came up. After retrying a few times, I tried the other option in system recovery (f10) and it said user data would be preserved but I may need to reinstall programs, so I thought that'd be fine. I let it do it's thing and came back later when it was done and it looked like the first time I started my computer ever where it has that cheesy music and asks you to name your computer, etc. So I'm finally in Windows again (XP Media Edition 2002 SP2) and the first thing I check is my documents folder and all my documents are gone! I checked the properties of the C: drive and it shows that I've used 224GB space, but I can't find my files anywhere. I've looked in all profiles in documents and settings. It seems like the files should be somewhere since the hard drive shows that I have that used space.

Am using XP, and noticed problems after the automatic update to IE8, which happened for me on 7/8. When we tried to use IE8, the toolbar had disappeared. I have no room on the bar to right click it, because it has a Google search window on the right side. In addition, IE doesn't even show in Windows Task Manager as an application when the browser is open--only as a process. I was able to uninstall IE8 (after uninstalling SP3) and go back to IE7, but it has the same issue--no toolbar. I tried the Fixit offered by Microsoft (50157) for this problem, but it did nothing. I tried doing a regedit to delete the ITBarLayout value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/Microsoft/IE/Toolbar/Shellbrowser (although it wasn't specifically labeled ITBarLayout, but was the only entry with a value, sorry I haven't worked with the registry much). I was able to do a successful System Restore to 7/5, but that did nothing. I am at a loss--should I try to reinstall IE8? SP3 first?
Besides this, since the System Restore my Norton Internet Security 2009 has an error in the browser protection, and I am unable to download the fix for that because IE won't stay open when I try to download the Norton Removal Tool. My mom has gotten the same browser problem, so I think something happened to both of us through the automatic update to IE8. She is also on XP.

Win XP Pro I've just reinstalled my system and several programs. I've also begun "customizing" windows such as getting rid of messenger, turning off automatic update etc. At the end of bootup, I get a small box in the middle of the screen with nothing on the top section to indicate what program it is coming from or responding to. It says: "cocreateinstance error". There is a little "ok" and when I left click, the box goes away and all seems to go very smoothely. But something is wrong - any ideas of where I might start to look since there's no error code and no reference to a particular program?

This lady doesnt do much with her pc. Let her granddaughter download crap from bearshare and you know the malware virus issues galore. I ran a couple of programs to get rid of those issues. She had NO antivirus so I was going to download the trial version to Trend Micro for her. This is when I discovered she had never updated her pc. Trend says it will only work on SP2 and above. Tried to, and updates were disabled. Followed the microsoft KB articles related to turning on the auto updates, the BITS services, to no avail. Tried to register and reregister the DLL's, that failed also. Tried to go to the update site, tried to downloading the malicious removal tool, it will not let me run it. I ran housecall, a bunch of vulnerabilities show up possible related to just the SP1 issue.

My OpticPro 9636T scanner parallel port scanner initially would not work under Windows XP Pro. Plustek does not support XP on this model. I finally found a driver from Germany. When installed with right mouse clicks, it installed in English, and worked perfectly. Since the MS automatic update to SP2, it no longer works, and the driver from Germany won't install.Does anyone know of a driver that will work?

The complaint is that Windows is very slow, and the problem started after "the yellow item (icon) showed up on the screen (system tray)."When the cursor is placed over the "yellow item," the text says "Automatic Updates."The computer is an HP Laptop, and the operating system is Windows XP. Now I realize that this is a very indefinite description of a problem, but I hope someone can help with the following questions: Has anyone had any problems with either slow boot or slow operation when Windows automatic updates are enabled? Either with Windows 2000 or Windows XP? When you enable automatic updates, does the "Windows Update" option from the START/ALL PROGRAMS menu disappear (it had disappered from the menu on the problem computer)? Can automatic updates be disabled, and, if so, does the option return to the All Programs menu?

When I have Automatic Updates enabled, svchost uses 100% of the CPU. I disabled svchost and am able to use the computer.
With svchost disabled, I can not use Automatic Update. With it enabled, the computer freezes.
Is there a place to update Microsoft Office without having scvhost enabled?

Compaq Presario 6470NX running Windows XP. Automatic updates are continually trying and failing to update my system. One of the popups I get is: "SQLDUMPER library failed initialization. Your installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with. Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem." I restored to an earlier date and that went away. But, I'm still not getting my updates done. Last Tuesdays are (KB928365, 928366, and 928367).

About 7 days ago PC startup time went to an average of 6-7 minutes from just a few minutes. The event viewer seems to point to an 'Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler' entry with description: "Initialization of the COM subsystem failed: Error code: 0x8007041D". It is the only 'error' entry in the log upon startup. I Googled this to death and tried various things:
1. checked HD for errors
2. multiple tools used to cleanup/repair registry
3. reinstalled Windows Automatic Updater
4. defrag the HDs (grasping at straws)....

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

Right after Windows XP security update yesterday 1/21/2010 I found my computer was off. This was normal after an windows update. So I turned my computer back on and received an error message of "NTLDR is missing". After trying twice to re-boot, with the same error, upon checking my startup BIOS file I found the BIOS record had been altered to boot using the wrong hard disk.

was getting a blue screen 07A was told by computer techs without looking it was either my hard drive or my operating system. Checked my hard drive several different ways and no problems. So I went to do a Windows XP repair instead of complete reinstall as they are a pain. After a long time it came back that couldn't do this because SPCMDCOM>SYS file was missing and couldn't repair from recovery console without it. My hard drive was replaced by Dell in July of 05 I think. What can I do without going to extremes? Secondly can I install my cd/dvd rom on my other Dell PC with discs I already have? I am very aggravated. I want to try to save at least 1 computer. On the 1st PC about 2 months ago I had my 17 inch flat panel go out it starts but then go black, I am using the 2nd computers screen!
