Is there a way to disable Windows Automatic Updates from updating device drivers. There are a several PC's at my job that have problems with a device driver update from. I would still like to recieve regular security updates, but I dont want any device driver updates.
View 2 RepliesThe last windows update that I can see is KB 905474 and was downloaded by my automatic updates.I can see it when going to windows updates/view history. Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

don't work... why ? Latest case is with the NVIDA update - I can't go beyond 4bit 640x480.

I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.
I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all. I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter....
Using win xp home, SP3, auto updates. I am only user, only one computer.I just noticed this In EXPLORER.EXE, under my LOCAL DISK (C), ... I have another "LOCAL DISK (C)" listed. In this folder it has...AutoExec.BAT with 0 KB AVG7QT.dat, with 11934 KB, and TYPE listed as Video CD movie.Boot.ini, 1 KB,CONFIG.SYS , 0 KB, deltemp.bat 1 KB, MS-DOS batch file.IO.SYS 0 KB,MSDOS.SYS 0 KB.NTDETECT.COM 47 KB, MS-DOS APPLICATION ntldr, 245 KB.These files are dated 10,11,and 12 month 2006 I did not set this up and am curious where it may have came from??? I am assuming it would be safe to delete this folder?

View 10 Replies View RelatedIve only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate.Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to.

How do I find a new driver for my sound card?I have an Insignia D400a with Intel Pentium 4 CPU at 2.80 GHz and 512 MB of Ram. I went to Realtek's web site, and there are some drivers but I didn't see any info on how to know which one is or will work for my computer.

It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? View 6 Replies View RelatedA DV device is treated like any other removable storage in XP and you get an autoplay prompt when you plug in the camcorder. When I bought my DV camcorder I installed some software that came with it. The software sucks, but before I came to that realization, I had already made it the default for DV autoplay.The problem is that once you select an app to autoplay, there is NO WAY to change it unlike with other removables (where you can right click on it and change it in it's properties). Trust me, I did a LOT of research online and could not find any way to do it.Finally, after a careful search through the registry, I figured out how to disable DV autoplay entirely.ALL the autoplay handlers are stored in this registry folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAutoplayHandlersHandlersIfound the app that was being autoplayed when I plugged in my DV camera and deleted it's entry. Now NOTHING autoplays when I plug in my camcorder which is just the way I prefer it. I'm sure there's a more elegant solution that allows you to reset the autoplay so that you can select another app, but this solves the problem for me.

have even used TweakUI and still the auto-login feature runs every time I reboot. I looked under the Group Policy editor, following my Administrator's Pocket Consultant for clues, and there is no effect.
i dont know the actual technical term for this function. its when u type something in the search box, a box will show your previous search terms. its very annoying & i would like to get rid of this EXTRA function. i tried to look into the 'options', but couldnt find any selection that can disable this function.

You could check the error log in this case but that is too easy. We are going to disable auto restart on system failure.

2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
Every time I put a DVD into one of my drives, Media Center automatically launches. Drives me insane. This version came pre-installed and I NEVER use it except with my XBOX 360.
1. Both drives are set to ignore all disc types in the AutoPlay properties.
2. There is no setting (I can see) within Media Center to disable this autolaunch.
first of all, under the settings for window's firewall, i am not able to choose whether or not i want to enable it or disable it. it is set as disabled and both the enable/disable buttons are greyed out and i cannot click it. second, my auto update keeps turning itself off. after setting it back on, it will turn off the next time i boot my computer. third, i'm having some networking problems. i can connect onto the other computers of my network, however the other computers cannot connect to me. are all these problems related in anyway?

After moving it to the domain with the new user, we copied the Windows profile from the old local user to to the new domain user. We currently do not have any group policies configured to disable auto play. When I log in with the username into the old local account the Wizard pops up fine. It is something related to the user/profile change. When we plug the camera into the computer autoplay works and recognises that the camera has pictures but there are no options to transfer pictures in the pop up box. i have tried a a few reg edits , we do not have Real Player, No luck with Windows autoplay repair wizard either.

After installing the latest driver, the 93.71 version I'm getting the Notification Icon on the task bar telling me an update for the Nvidia Card is available, version 52.16, I guess the basic update that was downloaded as part of the SP3 update.Is there a way to dismiss this update so that it doesn't continue to appear? For some reason the auto update doesn't recognize there is a newer driver available, the WHQL 93.71.

I really love W2K and not having to deal with blue screens error popup screens is the only factor that's bonded me to W2K for sooo long. So I guess the question is should I go to XP or move on up to Vista? This will be a full install I'm not one for throwing upgrades onto of other upgrades and so on. I'd also like to know if my files on W2k will be compatible with XP or vista? I'm going to want to move things from old HD to the new HD
