Disabling The Auto-reboot Feature Associated With Automatic Updates
Jul 11, 2007
I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate. Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to.

The last windows update that I can see is KB 905474 and was downloaded by my automatic updates.I can see it when going to windows updates/view history. Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

This problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.

A lot of people already know about Automatic Updates and how to disable them by selecting the appropriate option from within the Automatic Updates tab in My Computer. A lot of you might not realise this, but the Automatic Update service still runs even when you select to disable it here. To turn it off completely and for good do as follows:
1. Go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
2. Highlight the service called "Automatic Updates". You will know when you have the correct one because you will see a description about it telling you what it does.
3. Right click once highlighted and click stop to terminate the service.

Tired of being constantly nagged by reboot requests after installing XP updates I went to the wsindows update folder in Group Policy and enabled the "No automatic restart for scheduled updates" option, clicked apply and forgot about it. Untill my computer installed the automatic update for .Netframework, when, without any warning it went into reboot mode causing me to completely lose the data I was working on. The only other option in the update folder is to delay the restart but as this only allows you to stretch it to a max of 30 minutes it's not much help.

xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

I have installed XP as an upgrade from W2K to my wife's computer, and I recall that in the W2K installation the auto-logon feature was enabled. Now I am trying to disable this feature, so far without success. I
have even used TweakUI and still the auto-login feature runs every time I reboot. I looked under the Group Policy editor, following my Administrator's Pocket Consultant for clues, and there is no effect.

When I login under XP there are a number of programs (anti-virus etc) which start automatically and their icons appear in the 'tray' at bottom right of the screen. How can I disable any of these applications from starting automatically at login? All the info in the XP Help seems to talk just about how to remove icons from the Start Menu, which does not have the desired effect

I recently bought a graphics tablet that was Win98 compatible but that had a driver adapted to XP. I tried
to install the tablet on the XP machine but thr wizard had problems and couldn't find my driver. I have the driver installed now but I can't get the system to install again like it did the first time. I accidentaly clicked the "do not try to automatically install this device again" and now I can't seem to undo that and have it run through the process again

1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type:
control userpasswords2
then click OK.3. In the dialog box that appears, You'll see: "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box.Enabled will require users to logon, disabling will make XP automatically logon to the Administrator account.

So I made a folder with a bunch of shortcuts, then dragged the folder to the top of my screen to turn it into a toolbar. I like it a lot - the only problem is , when I go to close a program in the top right corner, I frequently hit the top of the screen so the toolbar pops up - this is rather annoying. It also happens if I put the toolbar on the left side of the screen - pops up whenever I try to hit the 'back button' on firefox.Anyway I was wondering is there a registry settings or some settings to change the delay, so that it only pops up if I hold the pointer for a certain amount of milliseconds?

My computer is only about 4 months old and I do not have it set to receive automatic updates. It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? The last time I checked to see what updates were available it appeared Microsoft even said that some of them could create problems.

I have tried to look for a similar problem here at TSG, but I couldn't find one so I decided to post. I have a desktop computer that I got about a year ago, it's running XP Pro on Pentium 4 3.2GHz system, has 512 ram and I think a 200Gb HDD. Lately it has been restarting, usually when I try to, eg: listen to music and surf the web, which is nothing strenuous, especially for a computer which I thought was pretty good. All of a sudden though, it has just restarted itself and, and as soon as it gets to the Windows XP loading screen, it restarts again and again. I can never get past the XP loading screen. I have a lot of valuable information on the computer and so I was hoping that someone would be able to help me fix this issue without formatting if possible.

My friend is running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and occasionally his computer shuts itself down then restarts it's self.I have run diagnostics on every component in his system and they all passed.
Can I eliminate this problem by shutting off the automatic reboot; And, if so, where would I find that?
If needed, I have a floppy with a list of the programs running in the back ground on his computer.

Any idea why my PC running on Windows XP occassionally reboots while I am in the middle of something? It does not seem to be associated with any particular programme, and neither AVG nor Spybot pick up any viruses etc, although Spybot does pick up a change in the registery after rebooting (should I allow the change?).

Can anyone help me to understand the following behavior I have seen on my system regarding Windows auto updates. On 2 different occasions there have been 20+ recommended windows updates. Initially there were just 2 (Windows Installer 3.1 and KB898461). I noticed there were 20+ after opening Outlook Express for the first time (which auto loaded windows messenger and put itself in the registry to run before my security programs). I changed my settings on outlook express, and messenger (and removed it from the registry). After changing this and rebooting my recommended updates went back down to 2.Again I noticed that my updates jumped back up, after I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I ran ccleaner, checked my registry and rebooted - they were gone again (back down to the same 2 I started with). I am not installing these updates, and am now wondering if I really should be installing them or not. Why are they appearing and then disappearing? How do I know if they are safe? Is it possible that a virus or hijacker could be creating these false updates. or am I being too cautious. I am definitely a bit suspect to lots of behavior on my computer now as I am recovering from a nasty virus that somehow took over my system while I was running Norton Security. I used to do automatic updates, but have now changed it to notify me. I am also running better security progams.

Any way around automatic updates to get upgraded to service pack 3?

This is very confusing. I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.

My tower was going into perpetual restart after bios, so I copied stuff off, then reformatted and reinstalled Windows. Did all the drivers, anti-virus, internet, so forth. I had problems with validating Windows, but that's solved now. Now, it seems, after about ten or twenty minutes, IE will not work, and I'll have to restart, to do it all over again. I haven't tried installing Mozilla to see if it works too, but I do know that the Automatic updates won't work either. It just hangs and never does anything.

How do I remove an automatic update that's been downloaded but not installed, and block it from being downloaded again in the future? I had installed SP3 for Internet Explorer 6, but it caused problems, interfered with my burners,so I restored to just prior to the installation. But now it's been downloaded again, and although I unchecked it under custom install, I now find it's trying to install it everytime I go to turn off or reboot.
