Disabling Or Resetting The Automatic Install
Jul 3, 2004
I recently bought a graphics tablet that was Win98 compatible but that had a driver adapted to XP. I tried
to install the tablet on the XP machine but thr wizard had problems and couldn't find my driver. I have the driver installed now but I can't get the system to install again like it did the first time. I accidentaly clicked the "do not try to automatically install this device again" and now I can't seem to undo that and have it run through the process again

This problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.

A lot of people already know about Automatic Updates and how to disable them by selecting the appropriate option from within the Automatic Updates tab in My Computer. A lot of you might not realise this, but the Automatic Update service still runs even when you select to disable it here. To turn it off completely and for good do as follows:
1. Go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
2. Highlight the service called "Automatic Updates". You will know when you have the correct one because you will see a description about it telling you what it does.
3. Right click once highlighted and click stop to terminate the service.

When I login under XP there are a number of programs (anti-virus etc) which start automatically and their icons appear in the 'tray' at bottom right of the screen. How can I disable any of these applications from starting automatically at login? All the info in the XP Help seems to talk just about how to remove icons from the Start Menu, which does not have the desired effect

1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type:
control userpasswords2
then click OK.3. In the dialog box that appears, You'll see: "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box.Enabled will require users to logon, disabling will make XP automatically logon to the Administrator account.

I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate. Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to.

I think I've finally stopped procrastinating and I'm ready to risk installing windows xp home edition SP2. But before I do, I want to be sure I do all the "prepare your computer" things I'm supposed to do. I did a complete hard drive backup. I'm running Norton System Works 2006, which includes Norton Anti-Virus. I thought I also had Norton Internet Security but apparently I do not. So I don't know what if anything I'm running for a firewall!!! [big problem perhaps, but a different thread!]
One message on this forum says "disable anti-virus and firewall..." In my case, how should I do that? I've disabled NAV "auto-protect" using the icon in my system tray. Is that enough, for NAV? I will disconnect entirely from the internet before installing SP2. But once I do that, do I still have to disable a firewall?

I am running XP sp2. The other day i noticed that i hadn't had any new updates since April 08. I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. Does anyone know how i can solve this please?

I have three microsoft updates that will not install. I have tried repeatedly to install them, however it is unsuccessful everytime. For now, I have put automatic update service on manual start until I can get it fixed as the automatic update service was eating up processor resources.

xp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

it gave the c drive a big red X and dropped tons of pos.tmp files in places. I downloaded an antivirus (the program was fine, it worked for my friends who had the same virus) and ran it. Randomly in the middle of the running my computer just died. It reset itself. So I went back into the account, and it reset itself again. I've done some work and am able to realize that the system will LOAD to the point where the account becomes active. Before any program can be used the computer restarts itself.

My install of XP Pro now resets itself 5 or 6 times a day without warning. It can happen anytime, and it's as if I've pressed the reset button on the case but obviously I'm not. I've got Sophos AV software, Zone Alarm Pro and Spybot installed and these can't find any virus's or spyware or malware. It's driving me mad because before this it was a very stable installlation.

I'm having a keyboard problem that nobody can solve. Should I reinstall the driver? Windows says if I remove the driver it will automatically select one the next time I reboot. Has anyone done this? I'm afraid it will screw up like most Microsoft programs and I'll have a laptop with a dead keyboard.

Can anyone help me reset either my own password or the Administrator's password so that I can use this laptop? The OS is XP.

I have searched around a bit to see if others have ran into this problem, but I have had no luck so far. When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

I was reading a string from 2007 on this site about a similar problem I'm having. My XP computer keeps resetting and after the computer restarts and an error report is sent I get a rather vague web page from Microsoft that a device driver might be at fault.
The string I mentioned reading involved a member here that seemed very knowledgeable and quite helpful, I think it was "The Hound" at any rate in reading the string The Hound recommended setting up the error process, for lack of a better term, to not automatically reboot so the message on the bluescreen could be read. I've done that but the system is stable for now.

I bought my laptop through the university and it came with XP Pro preinstalled on it. I did not receive any cd's with it and was wondering how to go about getting it back to a freh copy of windows. I think my registry is buggered now and wouldn't mind starting afresh. I did some digging and found a thing called sysprep that has the option to prepare the machine for the end user.I'm wondering if I pushed it that would take it back to the state

I have XP SP2 with a Sandisk C250 MP3 player on it.Two things I am having a problem with:I have a mini-SD card in it, WMP 11 sees it has music in it but will not tell me what it is. Player itself recognizes the music and the music is on the hard drive of that PC (WMA files). Short of buying a card reader and reformatting, then reloading, how do I delete music from it. Is the card the problem or WMP?

Windows display setting keeps resetting after startup On startup of my computer the monitor screen displays normal sized icons, then enlarges to gigantic icons. After all programs are started I right click on the screen and click on properties. Display properties open, then I click on settings and move the slider to my likings, I click apply and the desktop reverts to normal size and operates in all areas normally. The problem is I have to perform this task every time I restart my computer. It's obvious that the apply/ok
setting in the display properties setting is not sticking. Is there a fix for this condition? Please HELP. Running Windows XP.

I reset an account password by typing in "control userpasswords2 " in the Run command and clicking on an account and clicking reset password. When I came back to that account on which I reset the password on, some of the things are reset. I noticed that one thing that is reset is the MSN Messenger background images. For the Background of MSN Messenger, I had other downloaded background pictures in the Backgrounds tab, but now I don't. There only saved in my folder.
