I think I've finally stopped procrastinating and I'm ready to risk installing windows xp home edition SP2. But before I do, I want to be sure I do all the "prepare your computer" things I'm supposed to do. I did a complete hard drive backup. I'm running Norton System Works 2006, which includes Norton Anti-Virus. I thought I also had Norton Internet Security but apparently I do not. So I don't know what if anything I'm running for a firewall!!! [big problem perhaps, but a different thread!]
One message on this forum says "disable anti-virus and firewall..." In my case, how should I do that? I've disabled NAV "auto-protect" using the icon in my system tray. Is that enough, for NAV? I will disconnect entirely from the internet before installing SP2. But once I do that, do I still have to disable a firewall?
Does anyone know how to disable the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service in Windows XP SP2 in the registry? I know how to manually disable the service under Computer Management -->Services, but I would like to see if I can add/modify a registry key to do the trick.

I recently bought a graphics tablet that was Win98 compatible but that had a driver adapted to XP. I tried to install the tablet on the XP machine but thr wizard had problems and couldn't find my driver. I have the driver installed now but I can't get the system to install again like it did the first time. I accidentaly clicked the "do not try to automatically install this device again" and now I can't seem to undo that and have it run through the process again
I'm trying to configure the Windows Firewall after recently installing SP2, but it's set to 'Off' and the options to turn it on are greyed out. A message at the top says "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". After googling for some answers, I came across a couple of solutions, some of which involve reg editing, and others using the gpedit.msc tool. Problem is, I'm using XP Home, on which the reg keys don't exist and the gpedit tool doesn't either. SOMETHING must be blocking these things. So how can I disable this Group Policy thing, even though XP Home isn't meant to use it, doesnt have it and I never changed any settings like that in the first place?
I found I can turn the firewall on/off by changing the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWin dowsFirewallStandardProfile EnableFirewall=0/1. and in the Contrl Panel util it changes it's status, but it's still greyed-out with that Group Policy stuff. If you have Comodo Firewall Pro v3.0.25.378 on your system the install of sp3 may hang at 'Running processes before install'. This is due to the May 30, 2008 update of Comodo and the 'Guard32.dll'.To install sp3 either uninstall Comodo or an easier method is to disable 'Defence+', open the system32 folder and look for the 'Guard32.dll'. Right click on the 'Guard32.dll' and rename to 'Guard32.dll5' (or whatever you want to rename it to).I spent hours trying to figure out why the sp3 install hung at 'Running processes before install' (if you open Task Manager while the install is hung you will see 'fixcss.exe' and 'nv4prep.exe' using 100% cpu). Finally boiled the problem down to the 'Guard32.dll' which is Comodo's 'Defence+'.It won't do any good just to completely shutdown Comodo and stop the service. Apparently the Guard32.dll remains in memory and needs to be disabled by renaming it.After installing sp3 go back and rename the Guard32.dll to it's original.I have contacted Comodo about this issue and they seem to be working on it.

Reading various posts, I see mention of activating Win XP firewall immediately after reformatting and installing XP home. What is wrong with unplugging the modem, reformatting and installing everything including SP2, AVG AV, and Kerio personal firewall, THEN going back online and getting updates? Also, what is the value of slipstreaming SP2 instead of just installing XP then installing SP2 before going back online for all win xp updates?
download from msn and in 2 days 8 viruis and many registery problems have got rid of all by running spydoctor . registy meachine ,avg .ntl netguard. the main viruis was backdoor jcb but now my windows firewall turns off after every restart and so dose system restore i have tryed to install a new firewall spygate but this will not start up after i download it i did put in a new cd-rw drive a couple of weeks ago but thats been fine
I have a DSL connection, windows says the firewall is on but it is not. I keep getting this error message whenever I try to install it. "Windows Firewall settings can't be displayed because the associated service isn't running, do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connect Sharing (ICS) Service?". I click on yes. I am using eTRust EZ firewall and just recently started having problems with it and the effect on my pc. First, it wouldn't let me select allow or ask under the access internet or trusted column under the program control. But when I open control panel, security center, it says there is a firewall on. I don't beleive I have a firewall with Norton Systemworks

I am having problems with my shared printer. I do not use a local area connection for anything except just printing, but it appears I disabled a service i shouldn't have to get it working.
I realize you can do a remote shutdown of a system by using the command line shutdown with -m. (Windows XP) For security reasons is there any way to disable this from happening? Ie, some settings on computer X so that any other computer can't just randomly shut it down.I seem to have read somewhere that it's dependant on the Remote Proceedure Call service, but that can't be stopped.
This problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.
It seems like every time I turn around something (certainly not me or anyone else that uses this computer) removes the check mark that I've placed on the Recording tab of the Properties for my CD-Writers. I have several on this computer. This is getting to be a major nuisance.
Whenever I try to run Disk Cleanup, it starts to check how much space can be freed up, first by checking "Compress old files." Since I probably have something on the order of 5-10 million files on my computer (this isn't an exaggeration; I have several million files from research with medical data), this part of the scan essentially means that I always have to cancel Disk Cleanup, because it will never finish.Is there any way to do Disk Cleanup, but disable the scan for old files that Windows would want to compress?
I work for a very large company and the IT group has set all pc's to automatically go to screensaver and lockout after 10 minutes of inactivity (thanks security team!). I have someone's old XP Pro laptop and it remembers type-ahead values in every app from IE to God knows what. So if I type "Hello" in Google I might get : Hello dolly Hello magazine Hello.com etc etc et I don't want any of the previous user's historic choices and it is driving me mad!
I have found in Group Policy that there is a policy called Turn off Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services and is located under Computer Configuration Administrative TemplatesNetworkMicrosoft Peer-to-Peer. I have enabled this policy and applied to a test Windows XP SP2 machine. I have found that on this test machine I can still create a new ad hoc wireless network. how I can prevent users from creating ad hoc networks? Or why this policy is not working the way that i thought it would?
We have 3 computers all running Xp, just did a buncha windows updates.Now when I turn on my pc I get the Amin login screen, I do not need to type in a password, I just hit enter or login and it's fine.I never uses to have this screen start up, now I do though. There's only the 'admin' profile to choose, no others, I even tried disabling my 'guest' profile but this made no difference.It's not the end of the world, but just like to avoid this extra step.
