My host PC (my desktop) is running an ASUS P5PE-VM with 1gig DDR PC3200 Crucial RAM, has a Intel DualCore E2180 @ 2GHZ. I use a dial-up connection, and even though it is dial-up, my connection speed averages from 52Kbps to 54.3Kbps. So its actually pretty good for dial-up. My OS is Win XP wit SP2. I think that pretty much covers the important basics. My client PC (my laptop) is an ACER Aspire 3100 w/ 512MB DDR2 It has an AMD Sempron 3200 @ 1.6GHZ w/512KB of L2 Cache. It also has an 802.11 b/g wireless Lan. I installed a wireless card (Belkin Wireless G desktop card) in my desktop (host) and set up an ad-hoc network between the two. Basically I set up a wireless network without a router. I've done this before and had no problem, however this time I cannot connect to the internet using the client (my laptop). Everything appears to be in order, ICS is enabled on the host, Firewall in configured, communication between the two is there, I verified by pinging both IP's using ipconfig. The host is able to connect to the internet and browse with out no problem. its just the client I am haveing trouble with. Could it be a DNS problem? When I open IE on the client it just displays the 'cannot display web page', I even tried pinging the web page and am successful in that, it just wont display the web page. Am I missing something?
to start with I was using TeamViewer to remotely install symantec client 9.0 on my. Papa's laptop -winXP. The AV successfully installed and then the issue started when it was updating itself. all of a sudden the machine hanged .. never to recover! When hard booted the machine booted up but the start button nevr came and all the desktop apps were just small boxes! Recovery Steps that i took: I booted the machine in the safe mode and tried to uninstall the symantec but the windows installer does not run in safe mode !!
tried to follow a tutorial on the web to create a registry entry : To create a Registry entry, open command prompt ( Run->Cmd). Type the following command in the Window- REG ADD HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSafeBootMinimalMSIServer/VE/TREG_SZ/F/D %Service%. then "net start msiserver" to start the windows installer to install/uninstall app in safe mode. unfortunately it din workout i still get error 1084 “the service cannot be started in the safe mode”.
I've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine. However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work. Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could cause the problem.
I'm trying to configure the Windows Firewall after recently installing SP2, but it's set to 'Off' and the options to turn it on are greyed out. A message at the top says "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". After googling for some answers, I came across a couple of solutions, some of which involve reg editing, and others using the gpedit.msc tool. Problem is, I'm using XP Home, on which the reg keys don't exist and the gpedit tool doesn't either. SOMETHING must be blocking these things. So how can I disable this Group Policy thing, even though XP Home isn't meant to use it, doesnt have it and I never changed any settings like that in the first place?
I found I can turn the firewall on/off by changing the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWin dowsFirewallStandardProfile EnableFirewall=0/1. and in the Contrl Panel util it changes it's status, but it's still greyed-out with that Group Policy stuff. This is my first post after searching hi and low for help. Thanks for any you can provide. I understand windows, ha ha, but am not a nuts and bolts insider with registry or editers. Just want firewall to work. I upgraded my laptop with noproblem with sp2......
I think I've finally stopped procrastinating and I'm ready to risk installing windows xp home edition SP2. But before I do, I want to be sure I do all the "prepare your computer" things I'm supposed to do. I did a complete hard drive backup. I'm running Norton System Works 2006, which includes Norton Anti-Virus. I thought I also had Norton Internet Security but apparently I do not. So I don't know what if anything I'm running for a firewall!!! [big problem perhaps, but a different thread!]
One message on this forum says "disable anti-virus and firewall..." In my case, how should I do that? I've disabled NAV "auto-protect" using the icon in my system tray. Is that enough, for NAV? I will disconnect entirely from the internet before installing SP2. But once I do that, do I still have to disable a firewall?
im using windows Xp home and i need to turn of the firewall so i can file share between 2 computers but when i go onto windows firewall settings i can not turn it off it only allows the default (on). hear is a picture.
When I go to the control panel and select Windows Firewall, I am getting the following error message "due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display windows firewall settings". I wanted to check the status as my T1 internet connection has ground to a halt. Dial-up is OK. I have run Norton, Adaware, spybot, amd MS antispyware and look good there.
mslogin.exe wants access to internet I have McAfee Firewall 2004 and Viruscan. I believe I am coming close to having the viruses and worms cleaned out.An executable file c:windowssystem32oobewinkeymslogin.exe keeps trying to access the internet. I have blocked it and have granted it access and it keeps popping up.The folder 'winkey' does not exist on the computer as I have tried looking for it.
I'm really looking for a good firewall, and as much as possible, i don't want to buy, i just want firewalls that are FREE but still, in good quality. Thanks in advance to anyone out there
If you have Comodo Firewall Pro v3.0.25.378 on your system the install of sp3 may hang at 'Running processes before install'. This is due to the May 30, 2008 update of Comodo and the 'Guard32.dll'.To install sp3 either uninstall Comodo or an easier method is to disable 'Defence+', open the system32 folder and look for the 'Guard32.dll'. Right click on the 'Guard32.dll' and rename to 'Guard32.dll5' (or whatever you want to rename it to).I spent hours trying to figure out why the sp3 install hung at 'Running processes before install' (if you open Task Manager while the install is hung you will see 'fixcss.exe' and 'nv4prep.exe' using 100% cpu). Finally boiled the problem down to the 'Guard32.dll' which is Comodo's 'Defence+'.It won't do any good just to completely shutdown Comodo and stop the service. Apparently the Guard32.dll remains in memory and needs to be disabled by renaming it.After installing sp3 go back and rename the Guard32.dll to it's original.I have contacted Comodo about this issue and they seem to be working on it.
Reading various posts, I see mention of activating Win XP firewall immediately after reformatting and installing XP home. What is wrong with unplugging the modem, reformatting and installing everything including SP2, AVG AV, and Kerio personal firewall, THEN going back online and getting updates? Also, what is the value of slipstreaming SP2 instead of just installing XP then installing SP2 before going back online for all win xp updates?
download from msn and in 2 days 8 viruis and many registery problems have got rid of all by running spydoctor . registy meachine ,avg .ntl netguard. the main viruis was backdoor jcb but now my windows firewall turns off after every restart and so dose system restore i have tryed to install a new firewall spygate but this will not start up after i download it i did put in a new cd-rw drive a couple of weeks ago but thats been fine
Iam anable to open any MS websites either with IE7 or FireFox. Able to open other websites. I have tried adding "s"to the "http"protocol, but no luck. Then went to internet options and unticked the "tsl"option in Advanced tab, again no luck! Thus iam not able to manually download updates. The XP pro has SP2 and SP3 installed. All the drivers are in place. To add to my woes ,SAS PRO and MBAM are not getting updates too!To survive i have installed AVG 8 Anti-virus and it too is not getting updated! I have turned off the windows firewall and the Comodo Firewall Pro. The KIS 2009 disk is not installing as it is not being accessed by the dvd drive( please see my post in "General security"). When i run the diagnostic tool--i get the message that the PC is unable to access the FTP and the http and https are fine! Please ask for any further info' which i've failed to mention
I have a DSL connection, windows says the firewall is on but it is not. I keep getting this error message whenever I try to install it. "Windows Firewall settings can't be displayed because the associated service isn't running, do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connect Sharing (ICS) Service?". I click on yes. Then I get "Windows cannot start the ICS service. I recently installed a 30 McAfee free trial and it worked fine.
I am using eTRust EZ firewall and just recently started having problems with it and the effect on my pc. First, it wouldn't let me select allow or ask under the access internet or trusted column under the program control. Now, it won't let me access the internet if the program control is turned to low, medium, or high. The only way for anything to get to the internet is if the setting is turned off
HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.
My firewall settings are greyed out and a banner says some functions controlled by group policy but I have a home computer and no network administrator. I tried resetting the firewall setting and it didnt seem to work
I connect to the internet thru a router with a built in firewall.(turned on) I am also running a software firewall with comodo. Do I need the comodo firewall Every new update version of the comodo firewall seems to mess one thing or another up on my old winXP machine.
Windows XP Home running McAfee Security Center, which is not managing Security Center, and McAfee Personal Firewall is not installed. All Windows Critical Updates are applied.Windows Security Center says the Windows Firewall is off, Windows Firewall says it is on.
I just purchased a used Dell Dimension 4700, it came without the OS installed or the resource cd with all the drivers. I installed the OS this afternoon, but in the device manager serveral yellow ? came up. The flags are listed for the ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, PCI modem, SM Bus controller, unknown device, and the video controller (vga compatible).
After suffering months of freezing PC and blue screens (primarily the dreaded kernel stack error. I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this. I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000). Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.
I am connecting to a Windows 2003 Server using Remote Desktop. The client PC is running Windows XP. No client printers show up on the server. I have installed the drivers on both server and client. I have selected connect to printers in RDC logon options
I have tested the TS client capability on PPC 2003 and it works but I find it unsatisfactory because of the need to scrol the window. Does anyone know of a third-party solution, or, for that matter, a Microsoft solution to this problem. I guess that what it would mean is to have the window scaled down to fit the size of the PDA display, in this case a Dell Axim X5.
