Firewall Install - Settings Can't Be Displayed - Associated Service Isn't Running
Aug 19, 2005
I have a DSL connection, windows says the firewall is on but it is not. I keep getting this error message whenever I try to install it. "Windows Firewall settings can't be displayed because the associated service isn't running, do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connect Sharing (ICS) Service?". I click on yes. Then I get "Windows cannot start the ICS service. I recently installed a 30 McAfee free trial and it worked fine.

I got burned in the past using Internet Explorer while searching for lyrics. I switched to Firefox (and wish I had done it sooner) and had no problem since, but after the troubles I had to go through to remove those spywares I'd rather be on the safe side. I have an antivirus but I want to be ceratin that nothing goes in or out of the computer without my approval.

Does anyone know how to disable the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service in Windows XP SP2 in the registry? I know how to manually disable the service under Computer Management -->Services, but I would like to see if I can add/modify a registry key to do the trick.

When I go to the control panel and select Windows Firewall, I am getting the following error message "due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display windows firewall settings". I wanted to check the status as my T1 internet connection has ground to a halt. Dial-up is OK. I have run Norton, Adaware, spybot, amd MS antispyware and look good there.

My home computer hard drive died. Critical data was backed up, so I didnt lose anything important, but Im having trouble with my replacement computer.I had another serviceable WinXP computer, two years old, that had never been connected to the internet, so job one after putting it on my desk was to download AVG antivirus. I did that. But when I tried to update the virus database, AVG Control Panel said the connection failed, and I couldnt download the updates. (I can access the internet via IE7 just fine, which of course I dont want to do without adequate virus and spyware protection.) And when I checked my Security Settings, it says that the firewall is turned OFF. When I try to turn the firewall ON, the first error message says:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? When I click Yes, the next error message says:Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.Obviously I need instructions from a print or online manual to fix more than just the firewall problem. But Im not sure where to start looking, and what questions to ask when I get there. Some Windows users forum? This forum here? Where do I start?

I installed service pack 2 for my windows XP pro computer, and I am happy to say that I have not come across any problems after the installation. I am now using the service pack 2 firewall that is on by default as my primary firewall now because it seems to be improved from the original windows xp firewall (ICF).Before I installed SP2, I was using zone alarm as my firewall, and recently upgraded to version 6. After upgrading it, I noticed that it was accessing my hard drive a lot more than usual and taking up resources so I checked the zone alarm forums and noticed how a lot of other people were having issues with it so I got rid of it.

I'm wondering why my Windows Firewall options are all greyed out and a message states that "for your security, some settings are controlled by a group policy" I also have a follow up question as to how to remove a service that appears to not be in the HJT log but shows when I check msconfig under services

I have run virus scan, Adaware and Spybot and nothing is found yet the computer runs slow. Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.

I'm using Windows XP Professional, an Intel P4 with 1.0GB Ram, nVidia GeForce FX5700 graphics card. Microsoft's Windows Defender Beta 2, Nod 32 Antivirus program and eTrust's Pest Patrol are running on my PC. I also have Windows Firewall running in the background. On starting the PC and before the Microsoft XP's welcome splash screen, I get a blank window. Not always, but 99% of the time. The only way I can close this window, is to click the OK button that appears on the screen. Clicking on the red X button doesn't help close it either. Once the window closes, the welcome screen appears and then the desktop with my icons, folders, shortcuts etc. appear and all is well with the PC. Most of the time the window is blank except for the OK button in the middle. On some occasions, a single file path(different each time I start the PC - examples listed below) can be seen on the dark blue band on top of the window and occasionally, inside the window:
C:WindowsSystem32inetsrvlonsint.dll
C:WindowsSystem32muic0axpsp1res.dll
C:WindowsSystem32mui40dxpsp2res.dll ....

I have a USB Lexmark X73 Printer/Scanner/Copier. I use WinXP. It has been working just fine, but today when I tried to print something from Word, it said that there were no printers configured. Sure enough, every application just showed that there were no printers.I am sure that the connection is fine, because when I connect and turn on the printer, the Lexmark tray icon changes, but I am not able to print nor edit printing properties.Under Control Panel/Printers, there was nothing. Under the start menu Control Panel/Printers, there was only an Add Printer icon, but when I click on it, an error message pops up saying "Operation could not be completed." I tried to reinstall the driver, but towards the end, a message pops up saying that the printer can not function with out the Spool service running, and that I need to start the Spool service. Checking the task manager, sure enough, there wasn't a Spool task. I tried to run spool.exe and winspool.exe, but nothing happened.

I'm trying to configure the Windows Firewall after recently installing SP2, but it's set to 'Off' and the options to turn it on are greyed out. A message at the top says "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". After googling for some answers, I came across a couple of solutions, some of which involve reg editing, and others using the gpedit.msc tool. Problem is, I'm using XP Home, on which the reg keys don't exist and the gpedit tool doesn't either. SOMETHING must be blocking these things. So how can I disable this Group Policy thing, even though XP Home isn't meant to use it, doesnt have it and I never changed any settings like that in the first place?
I found I can turn the firewall on/off by changing the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWin dowsFirewallStandardProfile EnableFirewall=0/1. and in the Contrl Panel util it changes it's status, but it's still greyed-out with that Group Policy stuff. This is my first post after searching hi and low for help. Thanks for any you can provide. I understand windows, ha ha, but am not a nuts and bolts insider with registry or editers. Just want firewall to work. I upgraded my laptop with noproblem with sp2......

I think I've finally stopped procrastinating and I'm ready to risk installing windows xp home edition SP2. But before I do, I want to be sure I do all the "prepare your computer" things I'm supposed to do. I did a complete hard drive backup. I'm running Norton System Works 2006, which includes Norton Anti-Virus. I thought I also had Norton Internet Security but apparently I do not. So I don't know what if anything I'm running for a firewall!!! [big problem perhaps, but a different thread!]
One message on this forum says "disable anti-virus and firewall..." In my case, how should I do that? I've disabled NAV "auto-protect" using the icon in my system tray. Is that enough, for NAV? I will disconnect entirely from the internet before installing SP2. But once I do that, do I still have to disable a firewall?

When I try and open a printer I get the error message "operation could not be completed, print spooler service is not running."I've looked round the forums and tried some things. I can get the spooler service to start by starting it under admin tools, and also by typing 'net start spooler' in the command prompt. It starts up, and for a few seconds it runs and I can access my printer, but within half a minute is stops running again, and I'm back to where I was. So I am unable to print at all.

If you have Comodo Firewall Pro v3.0.25.378 on your system the install of sp3 may hang at 'Running processes before install'. This is due to the May 30, 2008 update of Comodo and the 'Guard32.dll'.To install sp3 either uninstall Comodo or an easier method is to disable 'Defence+', open the system32 folder and look for the 'Guard32.dll'. Right click on the 'Guard32.dll' and rename to 'Guard32.dll5' (or whatever you want to rename it to).I spent hours trying to figure out why the sp3 install hung at 'Running processes before install' (if you open Task Manager while the install is hung you will see 'fixcss.exe' and 'nv4prep.exe' using 100% cpu). Finally boiled the problem down to the 'Guard32.dll' which is Comodo's 'Defence+'.It won't do any good just to completely shutdown Comodo and stop the service. Apparently the Guard32.dll remains in memory and needs to be disabled by renaming it.After installing sp3 go back and rename the Guard32.dll to it's original.I have contacted Comodo about this issue and they seem to be working on it.

Reading various posts, I see mention of activating Win XP firewall immediately after reformatting and installing XP home. What is wrong with unplugging the modem, reformatting and installing everything including SP2, AVG AV, and Kerio personal firewall, THEN going back online and getting updates? Also, what is the value of slipstreaming SP2 instead of just installing XP then installing SP2 before going back online for all win xp updates?

Got a system I'm looking at for someone I know. They have a file extension issue that I'm not familiar with. Here's what it is and what they think they did to get it that way.Currently all but a couple their shortcuts on the desktop have a .lnk extension attached to them. If you try to double click the shortcut to open the program windows tells you that it can't open the file and askes you what program to use. Here's what they were doing when they noticed this problem. They went into Windows Explorer and accessed the "tools" menu. From there they went to "folder options" and selected the "file types" tab. They clicked to create a new file extension, entered "lnk" for the extension and clicked "ok" Then they selected the new extension from the list and clicked the "advanced" option. In the resulting window they unchecked the "confirm open after download" option and clicked "ok". After going through this sequence they noticed that all of their shortcuts had been modified with this extension. Also now if you create a new shortcut it is automatically given this file extension. They tried going back to the folder options and removing the extension but that hasn't helped the problem any. Changing the name of the shortcut back to the original format doesn't help either. The system is currently running Windows XP with service pack 1.
