I got burned in the past using Internet Explorer while searching for lyrics. I switched to Firefox (and wish I had done it sooner) and had no problem since, but after the troubles I had to go through to remove those spywares I'd rather be on the safe side. I have an antivirus but I want to be ceratin that nothing goes in or out of the computer without my approval.
My firewall settings are greyed out and a banner says some functions controlled by group policy but I have a home computer and no network administrator. I tried resetting the firewall setting and it didnt seem to work
I am running XP Pro and just completed a complete re installation. Also installed SP 2 and any updates available.Everything seems to be working except when I try to open Windows Firewall to check the settings. I receive the following message,Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running.Do you want to start the windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service? When I click YES it tells me that it cannot run.
When I go to the control panel and select Windows Firewall, I am getting the following error message "due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display windows firewall settings". I wanted to check the status as my T1 internet connection has ground to a halt. Dial-up is OK. I have run Norton, Adaware, spybot, amd MS antispyware and look good there.
My home computer hard drive died. Critical data was backed up, so I didnt lose anything important, but Im having trouble with my replacement computer.I had another serviceable WinXP computer, two years old, that had never been connected to the internet, so job one after putting it on my desk was to download AVG antivirus. I did that. But when I tried to update the virus database, AVG Control Panel said the connection failed, and I couldnt download the updates. (I can access the internet via IE7 just fine, which of course I dont want to do without adequate virus and spyware protection.) And when I checked my Security Settings, it says that the firewall is turned OFF. When I try to turn the firewall ON, the first error message says:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? When I click Yes, the next error message says:Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.Obviously I need instructions from a print or online manual to fix more than just the firewall problem. But Im not sure where to start looking, and what questions to ask when I get there. Some Windows users forum? This forum here? Where do I start?
I keep getting asked by ZA firewall to allow access to programs I have repeatedly "allowed" in the past, i.e. "Firefox is trying to access the internet..." I read in a forum that I have to allow for more time during shut down for XP to save all my settings but I can't find that ..
I have a DSL connection, windows says the firewall is on but it is not. I keep getting this error message whenever I try to install it. "Windows Firewall settings can't be displayed because the associated service isn't running, do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connect Sharing (ICS) Service?". I click on yes. Then I get "Windows cannot start the ICS service. I recently installed a 30 McAfee free trial and it worked fine.
I am using eTRust EZ firewall and just recently started having problems with it and the effect on my pc. First, it wouldn't let me select allow or ask under the access internet or trusted column under the program control. Now, it won't let me access the internet if the program control is turned to low, medium, or high. The only way for anything to get to the internet is if the setting is turned off
I connect to the internet thru a router with a built in firewall.(turned on) I am also running a software firewall with comodo. Do I need the comodo firewall Every new update version of the comodo firewall seems to mess one thing or another up on my old winXP machine.
Windows XP Home running McAfee Security Center, which is not managing Security Center, and McAfee Personal Firewall is not installed. All Windows Critical Updates are applied.Windows Security Center says the Windows Firewall is off, Windows Firewall says it is on.
I have a new system at home which I am getting ready to roll out. I have always used Norton Security on all my PCs prior to using XP Pro. This new system has XP Pro. Should I , or maybe should I say can I run both Norton and XPs firewall with no problems Don't want to keep paying for annual subscription updates to Norton, if I don't have to
I found images in Windows Picture and Fax viewer that I want to delete. I can delete them one-by-one, but that takes time. I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly
When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.Is there some way to use the old Dave file?
I have Windows XP and have the windows firewall on. I also have Norton 2005 Systemworks. Funny thing happened, I turned off the windows firewall under control panel, windows firewall. But when I open control panel, security center, it says there is a firewall on. I don't beleive I have a firewall with Norton Systemworks
I'm having a major problem with XP Home Edition. When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.
Files and settings wizard does not replace files and settings after re installation. of XP. After several tries I got a copy of FASTconv, a command line program, to extract the files. It has been a long time since I used a command line and the command is complex. I have set the command follows........ fastconv /V /S:source store /D:destination store /T:temp store /I left out the /I switch so all files in the Dir source store would be extracted. Same thing happens when I put in /I switch.I named the Dir. source store, destination store and temp store. When I run it I get instructions on usage and a command prompt What am I missing?
I notice Windows XP has a firewall. I was told by a friend it does not work and I need to download one (zoneAlarm). Does XP's firewall serve any purpose?
I recently ran my windows update and downloaded all necisary files but when I finally got to actually getting SP2 an so on . For some reason the firewall for it won't turn on and I've done what's told me to do but nothing I can't get it up and going
Before my old harddrive died I ran microsoft sp2 with windows firewall without any problems. But now I can't use windows firewall with sp2. After installing a new hard drive I upgraded my xp home edition which ran on sp1 to sp2 like I did before. I had windows firewall for sp1 but for some reason it's deactivated for sp2.
I just finally got my wireless connection working, after a couple days. Is there any particular tweak or setting for windows firewall Anything I need to do there to make sure I am protected
Let me first start off by saying, I've recently installed the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP and no problems. (yet) Anyways, with it, there is a firewall available. Is it safer than ZoneAlarm for example? I don't know if I can trust it.
Does anybody have any idea what the path and file name is of the Windows XP ICF Firewall? I'm not talking in this case of all it's little files, but just the main executable file. Or is all it's code perhaps simply in a .dll file?
My Windows Firewall automatically turns off every time i reboot. Is this because Norton Antivirus has its own internal firewall? If it is because of Norton, is it ok to leave the Windows Firewall turned off? I'm concerned that my computer isn't adequately secured.
I continually have my norton Internet Security popping up alerting me that my firewall is turned off. What is causing this to turn off?How can I prevent the windows firewall from turning off? Is Norton running a Firewall in addition to the windows firewall?
I have been trying to solve this for quite some time now. I go into the control panel, firewall settings. On the first tab, you get to choose your firewall setting (on/on with exceptions/Off). All of my options are greyed out and I have no options to start the firewall.Clean computer (just spent the last 3 days debugging it). I am sure that it has something to do with what was downloaded by my son but even after cleaning up the computer to get rid of spyware, malware, trojans, backdoors, viruses, etc I am left with the same result.
A few days ago my windows firewall warning was on. While attempting to re-enable the firewall through the security center I received a message "we're sorry, the security center could not turn on windows firewall" and then told me to do it manually. Attempting to open the windows firewall gave me this message "Windows firewall settings could not be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall/Internet Connection sharing service? Yes/No.Clicking Yes, gives this message: "Windows cannot start the Windows firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service." With no further explanation. I re-installed SP2 with no improvement.
