Before my old harddrive died I ran microsoft sp2 with windows firewall without any problems. But now I can't use windows firewall with sp2. After installing a new hard drive I upgraded my xp home edition which ran on sp1 to sp2 like I did before. I had windows firewall for sp1 but for some reason it's deactivated for sp2.
View 4 RepliesWell I have a serious issue with my computer and one that means if I can't fix it I will have to replace my hard drive and reinstall windows. I recently installed kerio firewall and avant virus security along with a few other programs I got rid of, upon restarting like it told me to, like with most program installations, I got a blue screen telling me my drivers were not loaded and that windows was going to delete everything off my hard drive... I found it odd and slightly scarey so I rebooted in safe mode and did virus scans and the works, then did a system restore back to before I installed all of the program because that what I think causes it... It won't let me restore, it tells me it did but then when I try to get onto my normal system runnings, i can actually get into the desktop but everything is dreadfully slow and after about 20 minutes the blue screen message comes back up again... My explaination is rather bad so I will answer any questions you need me too

View 3 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!

On the first tab, you get to choose your firewall setting (on/on with exceptions/Off). All of my options are greyed out and I have no options to start the firewall.Clean computer (just spent the last 3 days debugging it). Thanks to symantec antivirus corporate edition (which can detect but never repair) and microsoft antispyware software i've eliminated it. Yet today a new infection popped up from a file "eraseme_12604.exe" in my system32 (i dont know how it got there). I know this is an old topic, but I thought I'd try to get the latest opinions on this. I'm trying to decide whether to get another firewall. Everybody says the problem with the XP firewall is that although it controls
incoming connections, it doesn't control outgoing connections. I already have the free ZoneAlarm firewall on my Win2K computers, which works fine. And I could add it to my new XP Home Edition computer. But apparently some people complain that ZoneAlarm adds log files that grow large, etc. etc. so I figured I'd avoid adding another firewall *if* it wasn't really necessary. What's the current consensus, if any?
