I got this dell laptop running xp pro and when I try to log on I get.Unable to log you on because the netlogon service is not running on this machine.This was in safe mode.....so am I SOL? What I do? I think I may have deleted something out of the registry.I did back it up first and I was going to restore it.but I can't log on.
View 8 RepliesI have a USB Lexmark X73 Printer/Scanner/Copier. I use WinXP. It has been working just fine, but today when I tried to print something from Word, it said that there were no printers configured. Sure enough, every application just showed that there were no printers.I am sure that the connection is fine, because when I connect and turn on the printer, the Lexmark tray icon changes, but I am not able to print nor edit printing properties.Under Control Panel/Printers, there was nothing. Under the start menu Control Panel/Printers, there was only an Add Printer icon, but when I click on it, an error message pops up saying "Operation could not be completed." I tried to reinstall the driver, but towards the end, a message pops up saying that the printer can not function with out the Spool service running, and that I need to start the Spool service. Checking the task manager, sure enough, there wasn't a Spool task. I tried to run spool.exe and winspool.exe, but nothing happened.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi have a very irritating problem that i have had for about two months now.im running xp 64 bit with , 8500, gigabyte MB, 4 gig of ram for some reason i cannot get the spool service to run, every time i start it it shuts right back off.it is set to automatic and there are no print drivers on this machine in fact i just did a complete reload of the op system.so i was thinking that would cure the problem.it did not, i cannot get it to start up, i have searched the web high and low and i have tried everything.i just bought a new hp cp 1215 lazer printer, and it works fine on my other computers.i have two laptops that i print thru a network thru a usb hub and i use this new printer and it works great.but i could not get it to work on this desk top.as i said i did a dump and reformat of the hard drive and loaded xp 64 back on it and tried to load the printer and it could not due to print spooler not running.

View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen I try and open a printer I get the error message "operation could not be completed, print spooler service is not running."I've looked round the forums and tried some things. I can get the spooler service to start by starting it under admin tools, and also by typing 'net start spooler' in the command prompt. It starts up, and for a few seconds it runs and I can access my printer, but within half a minute is stops running again, and I'm back to where I was. So I am unable to print at all.
View 8 Replies View RelatedGot a system I'm looking at for someone I know. They have a file extension issue that I'm not familiar with. Here's what it is and what they think they did to get it that way.Currently all but a couple their shortcuts on the desktop have a .lnk extension attached to them. If you try to double click the shortcut to open the program windows tells you that it can't open the file and askes you what program to use. Here's what they were doing when they noticed this problem.They went into Windows Explorer and accessed the "tools" menu. From there they went to "folder options" and selected the "file types" tab. They clicked to create a new file extension, entered "lnk" for the extension and clicked "ok" Then they selected the new extension from the list and clicked the "advanced" option. In the resulting window they unchecked the "confirm open after download" option and clicked "ok". After going through this sequence they noticed that all of their shortcuts had been modified with this extension. Also now if you create a new shortcut it is automatically given this file extension. They tried going back to the folder options and removing the extension but that hasn't helped the problem any. Changing the name of the shortcut back to the original format doesn't help either.The system is currently running Windows XP with service pack 1.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn my Event Viewer under "system" I am getting these constant errors logged at about 12 per second with the big red X saying "Service Control Manager, ID 7001." It is happening whenever I am connected to the internet by e-mail or my browser, which is IE7.What in the world is going on?? No noticeable symptoms, except when it first started I was at Expedia.com and my browser (IE) started acting slow and weird. That was fixed when I re-started but the red error thingys are still logging 12 per second under "system" when on e-mail or the internet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI m trying to install Service pack 2 onto my home PC. I used to have SP2 on my computer and it worked and installed perfectly but months ago I had to format and put on SP1. I have now decided that I want SP2 back on and having tried around 6 times with 2 different discs and with no avail. I am having the same problem every time; it will not finish the installation and will hang on the boot screen. It will install all the components but on boot it will hang and not finish. It has installed before on this same PC with no problems but not these times. I have tried an upgrade, a clean install; install driver and computer updates then trying both ways again. I have tried a quick and even a long format process but with the same problem every time. Could it be the hardware? I have made 3 changes since the last time of having SP2 on my PC and they are as follows:
-GeForce 5500 has now changed to GeForce 6600
-Added more RAM 256mb to 1GB
-Added a fan
I m not sure where to go from this, stuck with SP1 and unable to install the latest software I need for my college work.
I'm running the WinXP Pro ver. 2002 OS in a home built desk top machine. Problem is with the Remote Procedure Call (RPC).I have mistakenly disabled this Service from Profiles and when the computer rebooted it opened up into "Safe Mode" and is locked. Can't get it out of safe mode.I tried to undo my mistake and cannot enable this service. Messages say I can't open Properties boxes from any of the Services listed in the My Computer/Manage/Computer Management /Services & Apps/Services... window.

View 14 Replies View RelatedLike many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?
I was unable to connect to the net regardless of through direct cable or wireless pot. its only essential process' are running.

View 8 Replies View Relatedi ran hijackthis straight out of the .exe file and i can't find the 'backup' folder anywhere (admittedly i don't even know if there is one) but in turning off some start up items, i just went 'i'm so over this' and lost my cool and ticked 2 run.dll files....makes for entertaining computing, this much i know.question one: can i just 'get' necessary .dll win xp sp2 files from somewhere?question two: is this somewhere, a)over the rainbow or b) would i have to 'do something recover style' with the win xp pro disc that would possibly hang me over the edge of losing data which c) is sparsely backed up because d) i'm a tool. question three: above all else, it takes 10min for start up (yes the entire process) to occur which inevitably leads me to having to enter the password for the user (admin) account. is this because of the missing run.dll files or is it because i changed the password not twice but thrice and therefore i may have confused it a little?

The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything.
