Unable To Find Back Up After Running HijackThis

i ran hijackthis straight out of the .exe file and i can't find the 'backup' folder anywhere (admittedly i don't even know if there is one) but in turning off some start up items, i just went 'i'm so over this' and lost my cool and ticked 2 run.dll files....makes for entertaining computing, this much i know.question one: can i just 'get' necessary .dll win xp sp2 files from somewhere?question two: is this somewhere, a)over the rainbow or b) would i have to 'do something recover style' with the win xp pro disc that would possibly hang me over the edge of losing data which c) is sparsely backed up because d) i'm a tool. question three: above all else, it takes 10min for start up (yes the entire process) to occur which inevitably leads me to having to enter the password for the user (admin) account. is this because of the missing run.dll files or is it because i changed the password not twice but thrice and therefore i may have confused it a little?

I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

I have some minor glitches in my system. I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

I was working away on this Win XP Pro box that is used as a server.I was in a Net Meeting with a client and the next thing I know the PC crashed.No error messages, no beeps nothing just BAM dead.So I try to reboot the box and the High freq. beeps that (or I think) sound when a CPU is over heating. So I leave the PC alone with the side off for 4hrs and try again.And get the same thing.So I then (this is a server) take the hard drive out and put it in a different PC and try to boot it. I get the normal the PC didn't shut down properly message and no matter what I select the reboot just hangs.This PC is only approx. 8 weeks old and the person who manages this box doesn't do backups on the drive.So my question/plea for help is how can I get this PC back up and running or at the very least get this hard drive working in the other PC.

I had a missing "Windowssystem32configsystem" upon restarting my comp last Saturday. Couldn't boot into safe mode at all. Used HP's recovery console to run chkdsk and it fix errors on the volume. Wouldn't let me run the recovery disks I had to get from HP since they are not given with a new computer. Great I thought.Upon starting now, my antivirus won't run and a lot of Windows programs(Search adn System Restore just a blank page, Media Player, etc) .I can get IE to open up but no active X although it says it is enabled, also my home page doesn't show up at all but it is set to it. Those are some of the things I have found wrong so far as I am sure I have more.

two days ago my computer got infected with a trojan virus. it was running very very slow so i got the Norton 360, but when i tried to uninstall another version of norton from the control panel /add remove programs utility, i got the error message : �Cannot find C:WINDOWSSystem32 undll32.exe. I was finally able to get the norton removal from the symantec website, install the norton 360, get rid of the virus and other threats. but that didn't seem to help the rundll32.exe problem, i still cannot access any of the utilities in the control panel and my computer is still running very slow.

I am running XP. The system is crawling. When I do a Task Manager or Ctrl Alt Delete, the little green square is full up and this is with no programs running except Windows. I am using Finity Soft Memory Manager and this program says Free Ram 54%, Memory Load Index 44%, and CPU 100%. How do I find out what programs are running other than using Task Manager which shows no programs running?

I am doing a project for school and can not figure out how to perform a backup. I follow the book but it does not work for me. I am suppose to make a folder on my hard drive, then put 3 .txt files in it and a subfolder. I do that and then go to copy it to a CD. At this point I am suppose to change one of the files and delete another one, I do that. Then I am suppose to run the disk and restore it. This is where I get lost. I run the disk and it says that the restore was completed, yet I can not find it. I am suppose to write about the changes from the original to the copy but I can not get it.

I have a Gateway computer with Windows XP. I believe my computer keeps going into stand by mode. The power button is orange instead of green. When this happens I am not able to turn my computer back on. I have to unplug everything. When I plug it back in, the light is usually still orange but I just keep hitting the on and off button until it finally turns green and the computer will start up. I will now shut my computer down at night but when I get up in the morning the light on the computer is orange again.

I'm running Win XP and I have a question about setting up a modem connection while already having a DSL internet connection.I would like to set up a modem connection so I could get on the internet whenever my DSL connection goes down. Here's the problem. When I open Network Connections icon in the Control Panel and click the New Connection Wizard, the "Connect using a dial-up modem" option is grayed out and can't be clicked. Does anyone know what I could do to get that option back?

If you decide to uninstall IE 8 Beta 1 and revert back to IE 7, you will likely discover that its entry in the Add/Remove Programs list does not offer an uninstall option, especially if you installed the XP SP3 upgrade afterwards.
This is how to uninstall it:
Navigate to the C:WINDOWSIE8SPUNINST folder and then open it to expose its list of files.
Double-click the SPUNINST.EXE file to start the uninstall process.
Ignore the warning that uninstalling it may cause some of your installed programs not to work.
Restart your computer when prompted to.
When you start IE 7 for the first time, follow the directions to select your personal settings.
Run a scan at the Windows Updates site.

i have a dual boot, Ubuntu 8.04 and XP SP3. Everything works as expected on the Ubuntu side, but for some reason while in windows when I want to go into standby, it won't. Went into Control panel> Power mgmt and the dropdown menu is totally blank, nothing to adjust... I have this strange problem with my Dell Inspiron 930. When I open Fire Fox the CPU loads jumps to 100% and my mouse cuts out. The laptop hits temperatures of 60C +. I have done a virus using Avast Anti Virus and have found nothing. I have even made it scan before windows loads. I have done the same thing with spy bot search and destroy and I am really out of Ideas. This also effects Virtual DJ and Steam (Only in the community Tab = The one with flash). I think it might be Flash that is causing this, but I don't know how to complete remove flash from my laptop so that it can be reinstalled. Can someone please tell me how to remove and tell me if they know whats happening to my system.

Hi windows just keeps crashing on me not all the time but for example it crashed about 7 times starting up today. Each one at a different point but all sort of just as my pc had stared up, i have concerns that im not getting as much out of my pc as i shud be able too, its a little slow at times as well is there any program or way of seeing if everything is in order??

My dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.

How do you find out what correct drivers to use on your computer?? I recently had a driver issue and was trying to upgrade my Nvidia drivers which I removed via the add/remove program but I'm now unable to get the correct version for my computer. I downloaded NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 [Display adapter] but everything (icons, fonts, etc) comes out miniaturized now!!!

I know it was here at my last login, but Disk Cleanup is no longer listed in Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools, and the shortcut that I had placed on my Desktop is gone as well. This is the second PC on my in-home network, running XP Home edition, that this has happened to within the last 9 months - I have Norton Internet Security (all current and up to date) on all three boxes - anybody know what 's going on?

Ok hereS the problem... I'm using Windows XP Home edition with SP 2, I was having some problems with my Mcafee anti-virus software, so I booted up in Safe mode (using msconfig) to do a system virus scan. Once I did that, I tried to load msconfig to get back into normal mode, but i kept getting an error saying I must be logged in as the Administrator to do it, Which I was. Can someone please help me get back into normal mode so I don't have to reformat? Also: I do not have system restore enabled so that is not an option.

After formatting my new 120-gig outboard hard drive to NFTS,I backed up my entire C: drive - and yes, it did take ten hours - and I now have a 20-gig Windows .bkf file.I'd like to be able to open the file and see - and perhaps use - the contents if I do something dumb. I tried opening it using the suggested XP backup utility, but while it does seem to be able to return the the backup to the C: drive, it apparently doesn't 'unzip' the file for examination

Each time I click on the time I receive this message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I'm the admin. and I can't access anything. I tried clicking properties, start menu, advance, but there is no control panel.
