Everytime I start windows, the windows security Alert comes up with the alert to check my AV. I have my AV up to date but still I am asked to check it all the time by windows security alert. In the recommendations tab,It states Symantec Antivirus reports that it is installed but its status is unknown. The 2 options it gives are :Make sure your antivirus is up to date and turned on or get another Antivirus.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am using Symantec Ghost Enterprise Edition 8.0 to create an image that I can use to clone about 100 computers. All the computers have the exact same hardware configuration. I have used SysPrep to erase the licensing so that the user can type the license number from the sticker on their PC, and their user name. The problem arises when some of the computers locks up after the restoration, and on the first boot. After pressing the Reset button, it boots up, and asks for the license agrrement
When you finish with the license agreement part of the boot process, it then asks some users about the VGA, and NIC drivers. The problem is that not all the users gets asked about the NIC, and VGA drivers. Some of the users do not get asked these driver questions, but the screen resolution changes. Please remember that all the hardware are exactly the same, and they all have the same BIOS and firmware version.
I have XP Home on my computer and am useing XP's backup program and system restore to keep out of trouble but after reading alot of post on this newsgroup I have decided I need a better way to back up my OS. I would like to know which is the best and easiest to use Acronis True Image or Symantec's Norton Ghost

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have been having an ongoing problem in being able to install programs (diskeeper and Symantec) after I have downloaded them. Their advice to me has been to double click the "Event Log" in my Services list and set it to automatic. I have just realized that the title, "Event Log" does not exist in my list and I think that may be my problem. Recently, I upgraded my Windows XP Pro from a pirated version by paying for and installing the Genuine Windows XP Pro version. I had then installed SP2. I wonder if in all of this I have lost the Event Log heading and if anyone can tell me how I can get it back.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am working on a friends computer and I feel it needs a windows reinstall.
I ran Belarc on it after I failed at downloading critical updates ( the owner uninstalled some critical updates after they lost internet connection because they thought the update was somehow involved) So I ran belarc and discovered that there are a lot of failed windows update files.
What I am mainly confused about is the way it is partitioned.
Local Drive Volumes
c: (FAT32 on drive 0) 16.75 GB 6.13 GB free
d: (NTFS on drive 0) 44.70 GB 44.67 GB free
C. Drive has Windows on it and D only has two files on it. This doesn't look right to me. So my question is What now??
I can follow easy to understand directions. I have all 6 recovery dics to work with, they don't have anything on the pc that needs to be saved. Can anyone walk me through the first steps of getting a fresh install on this??
I am currently on Xp pro which has developed problems amd I dont have the XP Pro cd.

I burned my first cd the other day.... thats how rubbish I am... new pc has dvd+ -.. so im guessing it can re write... but the problem is that it wont make back ups for my existing dvd collection due to them being protected... I know its illegal to make copies to sell on...I just thought i would be able to make my own for the dvd player in the kids room, because they keep wrecking the originals????? any ideas on how to use my dvd re writer?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had trouble with my POS Lexmark printer and tried everything and anything I could find to fix it,taking info I found via the web. The last thing I saw, and did, was delete the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesSpooler
and the subkey DEPENDS ON SERVICE Well, after doing THAT, it not helping and not knowing that I should have backed up anything, I gave up. :banghead: Then I found another exact same used printerand bought that (glutten for punishment), I know but I have lots of ink cartridges, and they're expensive!) NOW, when I try to reinstall the printer I can't. My computer skills are as bad as my cooking skills and I need help if anyone can guide me in plain simple English (hard to find in Miami these days, plain simple English, that is!) Can I manually put this line back in the registry? Can it be put back at all? I searched on my computer and it seems it just disappeared - there's no trace of it. Nothing in the services file, I checked. And here I thought it would just go to the recycle bin I think I have the CD'S for XP if needed, but if I have to go that route, will it wipe out my existing files I have? No back up - oh, I do have a HD backup but no one has taken a few minutes to tell me how to use it. Tried doing a system restore -keep picking random / different dates, nothing worked - even tried in SAFE MODE, says it can't restore to that date (any date). Also tried doing last known good something or other in safe mode, Was suggested by someone else that I copy and save a file as a text file as XXXX.reg and then click on the file with all the codes, did as instructed and got the following when I clicked on it:Are you sure you want to add the information in C: Doc...to the registry. Put yes, then I got this message:
I am using eTRust EZ firewall and just recently started having problems with it and the effect on my pc. First, it wouldn't let me select allow or ask under the access internet or trusted column under the program control. Now, it won't let me access the internet if the program control is turned to low, medium, or high. The only way for anything to get to the internet is if the setting is turned off

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people that did not update your computer in time. No problem, just follow the instructions below to remove the worm from your system. Some users that are infected with the worm have a hard time updating and removing the worm because the system automatically pops up a message informing the user that the machine is going to shut down in 60 seconds. To stop your machine from shutting down one this message is displayed, simply go to the start menu and select run. Then type shutdown -a in the text box and click the OK button. This will stop the machine from shutting down. Now the first step is to apply the security patch to your system. We will remove the worm in step three but first it is important to update your system to make it secure. To update your system, click the link below for your operating system and download the file to your computer.
Windows XP Users - Click Here - Windows 2000 Users - Click Here - Windows NT Users - Click Here - Other Versions of this patch - Click HereNow that you have the patch downloaded to your computer, simply run the file from the location that you saved it at. Follow the on screen directions and keep clicking next. Now that the security hole in your system is fixed, it is time to remove the worm. To remove the worm, just download a special program that Symantec developed by clicking here. Once you have downloaded the program, run it and click the start button to start the search for the worm in your system. When it finds traces of the worm, allow the program to delete the files to rid your system of the worm. That's it. Now you should have a worm free system.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am confused by the wording of the warning on the MS site, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;322756.
"The actions that this Guided Help performs cannot be undone after Guided Help is finished."
What exactly cannot be undone? The installation of the Guide? Surely it would not affect System Restore.
I've done virus/spyware etc. scans and it's all clean first of all.I used black vipers startup guide to trim down my services that start on boot and it seems to go pretty quickly and that's all fine. Then when I try double click the icon that brings up my dsl connection it pauses. There doesn't seem to be any disc activity, but when I bring the cursor to the taskbar it turns into an hourglass so obviously it's waiting for something.I've brought up task manager during this and I see that it's loading some more avg components as well as imapi.exe which appears and then disappears.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have tested the TS client capability on PPC 2003 and it works but I find it unsatisfactory because of the need to scrol the window. Does anyone know of a third-party solution, or, for that matter, a Microsoft solution to this problem. I guess that what it would mean is to have the window scaled down to fit the size of the PDA display, in this case a Dell Axim X5.
