Installation Guide?
Jan 13, 2008
I am working on a friends computer and I feel it needs a windows reinstall.
I ran Belarc on it after I failed at downloading critical updates ( the owner uninstalled some critical updates after they lost internet connection because they thought the update was somehow involved) So I ran belarc and discovered that there are a lot of failed windows update files.
What I am mainly confused about is the way it is partitioned.
Local Drive Volumes
c: (FAT32 on drive 0) 16.75 GB 6.13 GB free
d: (NTFS on drive 0) 44.70 GB 44.67 GB free
C. Drive has Windows on it and D only has two files on it. This doesn't look right to me. So my question is What now??
I can follow easy to understand directions. I have all 6 recovery dics to work with, they don't have anything on the pc that needs to be saved. Can anyone walk me through the first steps of getting a fresh install on this??

There seems to be a variety of guides for this thing. Which one did you personally use and or think is the best?

I am having an issue installing Win XP Pro from CD & HD both. I have an 80GB Samsung HD and my 20GB Western Digital that I am using for win98se for my niece. When I put in the 98 bootdisk and boot to floppy with CD Rom Support that goes fine. I goto either my HD (copy of XP Pro) and goto i386 or even my CD copy of XP Pro I goto i386 and type winnt I get the message. Setup cant read from it's information file, file may be corrupt please check with your system administrator. ANY idea how to get around this or what to do here. I am completely at a loss. I had this same issue before but dont remember how I got around it. I been fighting with this for 4 days now and finally give up.

I've had trouble with my POS Lexmark printer and tried everything and anything I could find to fix it,taking info I found via the web. The last thing I saw, and did, was delete the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesSpooler
and the subkey DEPENDS ON SERVICE Well, after doing THAT, it not helping and not knowing that I should have backed up anything, I gave up. :banghead: Then I found another exact same used printerand bought that (glutten for punishment), I know but I have lots of ink cartridges, and they're expensive!) NOW, when I try to reinstall the printer I can't. My computer skills are as bad as my cooking skills and I need help if anyone can guide me in plain simple English (hard to find in Miami these days, plain simple English, that is!) Can I manually put this line back in the registry? Can it be put back at all? I searched on my computer and it seems it just disappeared - there's no trace of it. Nothing in the services file, I checked. And here I thought it would just go to the recycle bin I think I have the CD'S for XP if needed, but if I have to go that route, will it wipe out my existing files I have? No back up - oh, I do have a HD backup but no one has taken a few minutes to tell me how to use it. Tried doing a system restore -keep picking random / different dates, nothing worked - even tried in SAFE MODE, says it can't restore to that date (any date). Also tried doing last known good something or other in safe mode, Was suggested by someone else that I copy and save a file as a text file as XXXX.reg and then click on the file with all the codes, did as instructed and got the following when I clicked on it:Are you sure you want to add the information in C: Doc...to the registry. Put yes, then I got this message:

I am confused by the wording of the warning on the MS site, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;322756.
"The actions that this Guided Help performs cannot be undone after Guided Help is finished."
What exactly cannot be undone? The installation of the Guide? Surely it would not affect System Restore.

So you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people that did not update your computer in time. No problem, just follow the instructions below to remove the worm from your system. Some users that are infected with the worm have a hard time updating and removing the worm because the system automatically pops up a message informing the user that the machine is going to shut down in 60 seconds. To stop your machine from shutting down one this message is displayed, simply go to the start menu and select run. Then type shutdown -a in the text box and click the OK button. This will stop the machine from shutting down. Now the first step is to apply the security patch to your system. We will remove the worm in step three but first it is important to update your system to make it secure. To update your system, click the link below for your operating system and download the file to your computer.
Windows XP Users - Click Here - Windows 2000 Users - Click Here - Windows NT Users - Click Here - Other Versions of this patch - Click HereNow that you have the patch downloaded to your computer, simply run the file from the location that you saved it at. Follow the on screen directions and keep clicking next. Now that the security hole in your system is fixed, it is time to remove the worm. To remove the worm, just download a special program that Symantec developed by clicking here. Once you have downloaded the program, run it and click the start button to start the search for the worm in your system. When it finds traces of the worm, allow the program to delete the files to rid your system of the worm. That's it. Now you should have a worm free system.

I've done virus/spyware etc. scans and it's all clean first of all.I used black vipers startup guide to trim down my services that start on boot and it seems to go pretty quickly and that's all fine. Then when I try double click the icon that brings up my dsl connection it pauses. There doesn't seem to be any disc activity, but when I bring the cursor to the taskbar it turns into an hourglass so obviously it's waiting for something.I've brought up task manager during this and I see that it's loading some more avg components as well as imapi.exe which appears and then disappears.

I've lately had some problems with my win-xp (home) following installation/ un-installation of daemon tools that corrupted some registry files. After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

I am trying to install SP3 on a Windows XP Home (currently SP2). The installation is hung on "Finishing Installation - Performing cleanup". I downloaded the installer from the MS Download center (it didn't appear in Windows Update). Is it safe to turn off the computer (since I can't close the installer), or should I let it sit for a while longer (it's been hanging for a few hours)?

In performing a clean installation of Windows XP is it best to install the microsoft updates first once you've downloaded them from the Microsoft catalog? For instance Microsoft updates, Chipset drivers, Video drivers etc.

I tried to install XP Pro SP2 on my laptop and somehow my product key was no good. I first reformated my hard drive and Windows installation begun but I had to get out since the product key was invalid.I finally noticed I had the wrong disk. When I finally found the right disk with the right key, the old installation kept on coming back where I left it. How can I start all over again, with the reformating and reinstallation from scratch? I really don't know how to do this. Is there a special command at reboot? Do I have to put the CD in or not? I'm not sure anymore since it's been years since I've tried this.

Firstly, I currently have Vista installed, and wanted to install XP again. How can I approach this while achieving dual boot features? Second, if the only way to get dual boot is to reinstall XP and then Vista, how do I do it because my computer only came with Vista restore disks.Third, if I do reinstall Xp then Vista, what is the easiest way I can literally take my computer the way it is, all programs, documents, settings, etc... and then bring it back after I do a clean install. I currently do have a 60gb external hard drive as well.

I got A blue Screen of Death saying "Unmountable Boot Volume", though for the first few seconds,I see the Windows XP logo. I don't have any caching or shadowing things in my BIOS.(which in my opinion just sounds like garbage that MS threw on there as a default for BSOD's) I've been receiving a malware warning from Avast anti-virus, I had AVG, Avast, and Ad-aware running in the background, and only Avast detected it. I have my Windows XP CD, but it does not detect my XP installation, and only sees one of my other(non-functional) installations.And.I don't know the Admin password to that anyway. so I can't do a CheckDisk or anything like that. I'm writing this from a Knoppix Live-CD, so I can't use any windows Applications that might fix the problem. oh.... And another Detail... Under The Partition thingy for installing windows, it says that the file type is unknown. I'm not sure, but I think it was the NTFS.

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ104E Laptop which came with Vista. I wanted XP, so I booted from my XP CD but got to a screen where it said that no internal harddisk(s) found.Anyway, I paid someone $150 and he somehow installed XP. Have no clue how he did it and he won't tell.
However after having XP, I could find only some of the XP drivers for the laptop after hours and hours of searching the web. At the moment I have the USB's , Ethernet, Modem, and sound working but can't use the Camera, the AV Mode button, the S Button, Card Reader, and the Alps pointing device.
I want to do a fresh re-installation of XP on the Laptop but am not in a mood to throw away $150 again.

I only have the upgrade version of Windows XP so I had to install 98 first. But When I had begun the installtion for Windows XP (New installation not upgrade) I eventually came to the XP blue screen, thus unnallowing me to install XP.
