View 5 Repliesxp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

For some time now, I have noticed that updates were failing to install on one of the old computers. I fiddled with it a bit but wasn't too concerned as I had plans to replace it. I now have 2 newer computers that have been set up and one of them, after installing a number of updates, repeatedly tries to update XP then gives me a message that.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm a college student with a Macbook Pro running Boot Camp and running WinXP natively. Just yesterday, I got an error right in one of my classes saying I had a corrupt system file and said to reinstall or repair. So, I pop in the WinXP cd and repair Windows and go through the whole process of fixing Windows. Once I get through it all, I go to Microsoft Update just to find out I have a ton of updates to install. (91!) I had to install Installer 3.0 and it installed successfully and I restarted. I go to install the rest of the updates and Microsoft update downloads all the updates and when it goes to update....they ALL fail. Every last one fails. All 91! I don't understand what is going on.I heard somewhere that you need to uninstall all .NET things so I did that. Still didn't work.Someone said to stop AutoUpdate and clean out the SoftwareDistribution folder and start up AutoUpdate again. Still didn't work.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Installer 3.0, thinking it might be the problem. Uninstall is fine, but when I go to download and install, IT TOO FAILS TO INSTALL So, now I'm 92 updates down.I was told to go check my update history on the Windows Update website. It has no record of any failed updates. I tried multiple times to install with failed attempts and the history has no record of me failing to install anything. So, that basically means I have no error code to find through that. Can anyone please help me? I need my laptop for school for engineering stuff because they don't make the programs for Mac. Thanks everyone.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running XP sp2. The other day i noticed that i hadn't had any new updates since April 08. I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. Does anyone know how i can solve this please?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIm new on this site and I would like to ask you if you could kindly help me with my problem.here is the issue:
Im using Windows XP SP3 (installation of SP3 not the reason of the issue, cos it started before) and since few weeks back, maybe 1-2 months, the automatic windows updates are downloaded absolutely without any problems, but fails the installation every time.any idea why? I dont know which of my installed software could cause this, but maybe its just some system settings(which I havent touch).
My computer is only about 4 months old and I do not have it set to receive automatic updates. It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? The last time I checked to see what updates were available it appeared Microsoft even said that some of them could create problems.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a number of used Dell systems, mostly optiplex GX150, GX240, GX260 and GX270, as well as one brand new custom built machine. There are at least 15 machines total, and on each one I've installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 on the disc. On each one, ALL or MOST of the windows updates will fail if I skip the SP3 installation. This isn't a problem as SP3 works fine on the Dell machines and they're being prepped to be sold anyway. The problem is on the custom build. The customer specifically requested NOT to have Service Pack 3 on the machine. There are about 20 updates that fail on this machine. I've tried using Dial-a-fix to re-register dll's and restart services etc to no avail. These are all clean XP installs with no additional software other than device drivers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday I got a notice from microsoft that a critical update was ready to install. I downloaded the update after closing all other open windows. After the installation was complete it restarted the computer after which my compter would not completly boot up. I had to boot in safe-mode and do a system restore to get it working right. Today I have the same notice so I went to the windows update page, and saw the update was there. I didn't download it because of what happened before. So I went to my installed update history and it said it was successfully updated. I looked at the update again and it said the update was 0 kbs. Can you tell me what happened and why now the up date says 0 kps to be installed?

View 1 Replies View RelatedLike lots of other people my computer wouldn't shutdown automatically after shutting down windows xp...I tried enabling APM, but then the computer wouldn't shutdown at all, and just restarted all the time. so I always had to manually turn off my computer when the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen came up.
Well I fixed this problem, and came across the solution, for me accidently. I went to Device Manager, then to View then Show Hidden Devices, then you look on the list for NT Apm/Legacy Support. Under that is NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node. I found that this driver was disabled. Why, I'm not too sure, but I enabled it and now when I shut down windows, my computer turns off automatically. I went into power management and the APM was also activated/enabledIt must do this when you enable the driver.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running windows xp home. 2.99GHZ processor and 58 GB free space left. My problem: My computer automatically goes into hibernation mode and will not start up again for at least 5-10 minutes after. It gives no warning whatsoever when this happens. I'm risking it happening right now. I have the computer set to stay on at all times. All power options are set to "never" turn off.

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis problem just started occurring today. Whenever I lock the computer, then unlock it, automatic updates turns itself off and the red alert pops up in the taskbar. Same goes for when I restart the computer.
How can I fix this? I never turned them off and when I try to re-enable them, the security center tells me that it can't re-enable them for some reason, so I have to do it manually. However, the problem persists even after I turn them back on.
Can anyone help me to understand the following behavior I have seen on my system regarding Windows auto updates. On 2 different occasions there have been 20+ recommended windows updates. Initially there were just 2 (Windows Installer 3.1 and KB898461). I noticed there were 20+ after opening Outlook Express for the first time (which auto loaded windows messenger and put itself in the registry to run before my security programs). I changed my settings on outlook express, and messenger (and removed it from the registry). After changing this and rebooting my recommended updates went back down to 2.Again I noticed that my updates jumped back up, after I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1. I ran ccleaner, checked my registry and rebooted - they were gone again (back down to the same 2 I started with). I am not installing these updates, and am now wondering if I really should be installing them or not. Why are they appearing and then disappearing? How do I know if they are safe? Is it possible that a virus or hijacker could be creating these false updates. or am I being too cautious. I am definitely a bit suspect to lots of behavior on my computer now as I am recovering from a nasty virus that somehow took over my system while I was running Norton Security. I used to do automatic updates, but have now changed it to notify me. I am also running better security progams.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThis is very confusing. I have always had "Automatic updates" turned off but for some very strange reason, today I got that little icon that said updates were being installed. When I checked Automatic updates, it's now set to update automatically and I don't have the choice to change it back. I Also noticed that " Software Distribution Service 2" was downloaded today. I have no idea what that is since I haven't downloaded anything.
