Updates Fail To Install
Dec 2, 2005I presently have 4 computers 2 old and in the process of being replaced and 2 new, the replacements. For some time now, I have noticed that updates were failing to install on one of the old computers. I fiddled with it a bit but wasn't too concerned as I had plans to replace it. I now have 2 newer computers that have been set up and one of them, after installing a number of updates, repeatedly tries to update XP then gives me a message that.

Oct 24, 2007I'm a college student with a Macbook Pro running Boot Camp and running WinXP natively. Just yesterday, I got an error right in one of my classes saying I had a corrupt system file and said to reinstall or repair. So, I pop in the WinXP cd and repair Windows and go through the whole process of fixing Windows. Once I get through it all, I go to Microsoft Update just to find out I have a ton of updates to install. (91!) I had to install Installer 3.0 and it installed successfully and I restarted. I go to install the rest of the updates and Microsoft update downloads all the updates and when it goes to update....they ALL fail. Every last one fails. All 91! I don't understand what is going on.I heard somewhere that you need to uninstall all .NET things so I did that. Still didn't work.Someone said to stop AutoUpdate and clean out the SoftwareDistribution folder and start up AutoUpdate again. Still didn't work.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Installer 3.0, thinking it might be the problem. Uninstall is fine, but when I go to download and install, IT TOO FAILS TO INSTALL So, now I'm 92 updates down.I was told to go check my update history on the Windows Update website. It has no record of any failed updates. I tried multiple times to install with failed attempts and the history has no record of me failing to install anything. So, that basically means I have no error code to find through that.Can anyone please help me? I need my laptop for school for engineering stuff because they don't make the programs for Mac. Sep 9, 2007I just resinstalled XP 2003 SP2 after changing motherboard. My C drive was cleaned to the bone also. My only question is do I have to reinstall every Microsoft Windows update?
I am currently facing their second list of updates, after a two-item previous list, and the current one includes about 61 Windows Security Updates for Windows XP. Should I install each one of them? Is their any alternative? This list has one cumulative update for IE, and one for Windows Media Player, but then sixty-one Windows Security Updates for Windows XP mostly all dealing with hijacking vulnerabilities.

Windows update tries to give me 10 updates now, and thy download okay but do not install successfully. I'm using AVAST! antivirus which seems to work very well. I'm also using Mozilla Threatfire and PCTOOLS firewall. In a few more days, I will be 3 months behind on my security updates.

Im using Windows XP SP3 (installation of SP3 not the reason of the issue,cos it started before) and since few weeks back,maybe 1-2 months,the automatic windows updates are downloaded absolutely without any problems,but fails the installation every time.any idea why? I dont know which of my installed software could cause this,but maybe its just some system settings(which I havent touch).
Updates Fail On Mulitple Fresh Installs
Aug 30, 2008I have a number of used Dell systems, mostly optiplex GX150, GX240, GX260 and GX270, as well as one brand new custom built machine.There are at least 15 machines total, and on each one I've installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 on the disc. On each one, ALL or MOST of the windows updates will fail if I skip the SP3 installation. This isn't a problem as SP3 works fine on the Dell machines and they're being prepped to be sold anyway.The problem is on the custom build. The customer specifically requested NOT to have Service Pack 3 on the machine. There are about 20 updates that fail on this machine. I've tried using Dial-a-fix to re-register dll's and restart services etc to no avail.These are all clean XP installs with no additional software other than device drivers.

Jan 1, 2007Every time I try to install the si3112 driver I get an Install key fail error followed by an install driver error. I have tried to install it off both a floppy and the nvidia cd and both give me the same errors.
I have no trouble installing the si3112r driver (the raid) version' but I want to use it as my start-up drive. I have a GA-K8N PRO mobo and the drive is a WD3200ks. If I can't get it to run where can I download a replacement dirver from --with-out haveing to download a huge driver package?
MS .NET Framework Update Install Fail - Get Dell Program Manager?
Jul 23, 2010I admit to being a cheap SOB and have bought second han Dell Latitude D610 from work. For security they have COMPLETLY wiped hard drive and only reloaded original Window XP. I have neen working through all sorts of issues in loading all the drivers etc for a week of nights and have almost made it but I am having an issue in loading the MS update. I get the following message in automatic Updates window. "The following updates were not installed Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5SP1 and .NET Frammework 2.0 SP@ Update for Windows Server and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)"Are they important. I think I need them to get the Dell Program Manager to work to download all the drivers (I have done most by transferring to stick from desktop.)

Failed Security Updates After Reinstalling OS
Oct 7, 2007When I reinstalled XP everything seemed to work well. No error messages, until I was contacted by MS Update that updates were ready for download. There were 77. It seems they download just fine, but during 'initializing installation', the screen abruptly changes to a list of files that failed to install, which is all 77. I then attempted to shut down the computer and reboot. No change. I tried installing one at a time. No difference. I tried installing in numerical order. No change. There is no error message other than 'Some files failed to install'.

Computer Froze - Installed All Of The Security Updates
Dec 4, 2008I have a HP Pavilon with Windows XP Medica Center Edition SP2. I had to have the hard drive replaced recently and restored everything from the HP CDs. It worked fine for awhile until a couple of days ago the computer froze and when it started up again the desktop was back to the original after that the computer came with.
I've installed all of the security updates except for SP3, ran Hijack THis, Spybot, AVG and it all came back clean

Sep 9, 2008This has happened on two computers: my wife's and my parents'. Automatic updating is turned on. My wife's computer suddenly lost Internet service upon reboot. I checked everything. She had access to the Linksys router, the network properties showed she was connected to the Internet and, most importantly, I, on another computer, was connected (my auto updates was turned off). I fixed the problem by going to the Device Manager, uninstalling the network card and then scanning for hardware changes. Bing! Working again.Two days later I'm at my parents' house. I turned on their computer, updates were installed and the system restarted. Again, no Internet service despite all apparent "go" connections. Uninstalled the network card, rebooted and it worked again.
I keep my updates off because NetFramework 2 wreaks havoc with a library program I have, so no NetFramework at all. And I've had no problems. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? My wife had spent more than an hour on the phone with a tech support guy at Linksys and he had her setting up her notebook computer and changing its settings. When I got home, she was right in the middle of working with a computer that wasn't the problem. I guess this guy was paid by the hour because he was in no hurry to wrap everything up. But he told my wife that he works for several companies in tech support (real surprise there) and that MS "updates" create numerous "issues" I think they call them now.

Jan 12, 2005I went to the Windows update site last night for the lastest security updates for XP, and after installing them the colors and size of my taskbar and toolbars have changed! They are much more narrow than before and all are a dark grey. Even pop-up boxes are the same color. I've gone into properties but can't seem to make it the old blue color again.

Dec 17, 2004I have Windows XP w/SP-2 installed on a laptop. Last night, I was notified that there were four critical updates to be installed. I clicked to install them. When I shut the computer down, I noticed that the "Turn off" button had the little security shield icon superimposed and mousing over the button said that it would install updates and shut down my computer. I had never noticed anything like this before, but I assumed it was a new feature that came with a recent Windows update.
Now I'm worried that I was wrong, because after shutting down at 11:30 pm or so last night, the computer seems to be hung. I have a screen with a blue background, the Windows XP logo, and I get a message that alternates between saying "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically." and "Installing update 1 of 4." Again, this is behaviour I've never seen before, and has been going on now for over 9 hours. Unfortunately, I did not make note of the critical updates, but I seem to remember that the file sizes were not that large.
