i have a hp pavilion 533w with 512 megs of ram and windows xp home w/sp2. the auto update has been downloading security updates now for 2 weeks but still is at 39% when that little yellow shield shows up in the tray.

Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter downloading the most recent firewall update to Mcafee personal firewall plus the computer kicked me out and rebooted. I contacted McAfee support and was - after numerous attempts - able to load their latest DAT file on the system and run a DOS scan which took 55 minutes. It found at least one trojan (the Multidropper .F trojan). I thought this would solve the problem. No. Went into SAFE MODE and was able to remove Personal Firewall. Rebooted the sytem. Bam! Once my desktop loaded, the computer rebooted again. McAfee's Security Center is still on my system, but the firewall has been uninstalled. The Computer is still rebooting continuously. Even SAFE mode takes forever to boot up. Before I take the computer into the local PC shop what can I do

I have re-run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall and even done a WinXP CD repair with all reporting that everything should be OK. Still, whenever I open Explorer (either one) and each different folder in Windows Explorer a couple of succesive "Windows Installer" windows pop up with "Preparing to install" and then they close without anything else. Also, there is very little that can be installed now. Norton Internet Security reports that it can't be installed now. Windows Update gives an error after you tell it to install the updates or display the detailed updates. Sun's Java says that there is another install that has to be finished first. Messenger says that it has a new version that has to be installed before you can use it but after it runs for a while it reports that it can't be installed.

In this folder it has...AutoExec.BAT with 0 KB AVG7QT.dat, with 11934 KB, and TYPE listed as Video CD movie.Boot.ini, 1 KB,CONFIG.SYS , 0 KB, deltemp.bat 1 KB, MS-DOS batch file.IO.SYS 0 KB,MSDOS.SYS 0 KB.NTDETECT.COM 47 KB, MS-DOS APPLICATION ntldr, 245 KB.These files are dated 10,11,and 12 month 2006 I did not set this up and am curious where it may have came from??? I am assuming it would be safe to delete this folder?

Ive only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
I'm trying to disable that horrible auto-restart feature, but I can only get so far because I'm computer illiterate.Can someone translate the directions into lay(wo)man's terms? I know I first need to get into the registry, but I don't know how to get there. I know I need to edit HKEY_something_something, but I'm not sure which one or what it needs to be changed to.

But in spite of such insrallation, this particular file keeps coming into the Notifn. Area of the Task bar and on placing my cursor over it, I find that it is insisting to be installed again manually.

I just resinstalled XP 2003 SP2 after changing motherboard. My C drive was cleaned to the bone also. My only question is do I have to reinstall every Microsoft Windows update?
I am currently facing their second list of updates, after a two-item previous list, and the current one includes about 61 Windows Security Updates for Windows XP. Should I install each one of them? Is their any alternative? This list has one cumulative update for IE, and one for Windows Media Player, but then sixty-one Windows Security Updates for Windows XP mostly all dealing with hijacking vulnerabilities.
I have the XP Auto Update feature set to notify me of available updates but not to download or install. After installing the latest driver, the 93.71 version I'm getting the Notification Icon on the task bar telling me an update for the Nvidia Card is available, version 52.16, I guess the basic update that was downloaded as part of the SP3 update.Is there a way to dismiss this update so that it doesn't continue to appear? For some reason the auto update doesn't recognize there is a newer driver available, the WHQL 93.71.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I reinstalled XP everything seemed to work well. No error messages, until I was contacted by MS Update that updates were ready for download. There were 77. It seems they download just fine, but during 'initializing installation', the screen abruptly changes to a list of files that failed to install, which is all 77. I then attempted to shut down the computer and reboot. No change. I tried installing one at a time. No difference. I tried installing in numerical order. No change. There is no error message other than 'Some files failed to install'.
